The Joker Thread - Part 1

I could see the Joker having black lips, or at least a very dark red. Just to envoke that Babadook/Gwynplaine aesthetic

I'd love for him to have a creepy, old, silent film vibe to him. Just utterly disturbing
Honestly I'd rather it be a dark red. Joker with black lipstick feels wrong to me

I gotta say, as much as I dig Gwynplaine-inspired Joker, I'm not a huge fan of the idea to stick him in darker muted clothing just to fit the universe he's in.

If Reeves goes that route I'd trust him but I'd like for his outfits to have at least a hint of goofiness to them.

Yea I want to clarify that the Gwyneplaine look works as a foundation for the hair, eyes and smile but I would still expect the Jokers colors on top of it.

I think going back to formula with Conrad is the way to go. The eeriness of it what makes the Joker work and unearthly scary. The idea of him also wearing larger false teeth (in spirit of The Red Dragon/Tooth Fairy) also is a promising idea.

That second one is perfect. Just the right amount of ghoul

But at the same time, you don't want Joker looking like, for lack of a better word, cartoon character, in Reeves' world. I'm more interested in seeing how the Joker would fit the aesthetic that Reeves has established.

And because we've had sooo many versions of the Joker over the years, I don't see a problem with Reeves mixing things up and getting a little bit more experimental with it-- to give audiences something fresh; something they've never seen before. The Joker should serve Reeves' vision, whatever that may be-- not the other way around.

Last one, I promise...

Changes I made

- Removed his eyebrows

- Darkened his eyes so they appear almost black. I think this gives him a creepy, almost amphibian like appearance

- Widened his mouth (sorry, folks, only so much I can do with this photo), and went back to traditional red lips

- Upped the saturation to maintain classic Joker colors

I still like the idea of him wearing worn out clothing, in muted colors. Like he actually came out of the 1920's.

If he mainly wears dark colors then I'd rather his main outfit be a blue trenchcoat/raincoat like in ASHOSE.

Aside from that I'd personally rather have him wear zany patterns

I've shared this photo before, but given what we've seen of Reeves' vision for The Batman, I think this look would actually suit the Joker quite well:

I think the blazer and trousers would be best served by either black or a dark navy blue. The shirt would be white, and the tie also black or perhaps even a blood red. I can also see this look being well complimented by a wide brimmed hat like the southern Baptist preachers once wore, or as the Amish men still do.

Kind of like this Alex Ross illustration?

The hat and the colour scheme I guess, yeah. I like the idea of the Joker's flamboyancy and zaniness (not to mention the red lips and green hair) being juxtaposed against a very severe and foreboding dress sense. Reverend Kane in Poltergeist II is another good reference point for what I think would look interesting/suitable for the Joker in Reeves' world:

And that also extends to the withered, tired, emaciated look he has.

Oh lawd, I really hated walking in on that movie as a child.

As much as I really want Kramer shirts and just dorky clothes in general for visual comedy, I feel like Reeves might really lean into the gloomy gothic aesthetic for Joker. I personally have mixed feelings on this

Okay I think I got it now. The darker gothic silent film clothing can be for his more business-oriented scenes.

When he's just out to have fun then he can wear something more clown-y.

I'm REEEEALLY liking the patterned shirts

I am so so mixed on this idea :(

If it makes you feel any better, Andy, none of us are actually going to be listened to. o_O

I like the idea of going all the way with the silent film influence right down to the way he dresses but at the same time I'd really like for The Joker to slightly pop in this universe. Warm yet faded colors, Kramer shirts, stuff like that.
