The Joker Thread - Part 1

Lol of course that would be the lazy mindset to have. Nope. It’s not that at all. I just think it’s beyond gimmicky to change the gender of an iconic character. Just use existing female characters? Imagine the uproar if someone suggested the next Black Widow or Captain Marvel could be a man? Imagine that official announcement? Or a guy dressed like Natasha Romanoff?

People are being civil about it here (just suggesting) but if anyone else online gets mad at this...well...get over it. Cuz Joker is a MAN. And Harley Quinn is a WOMAN. Period.

The character is essentially genderless and asexual (well forget Nicholson). Those of us suggesting women for The Joker (speaking for myself here, but extrapolating) aren’t looking for reworking of the character into some trendy form of feminism, but just think the actress could bring something interesting to the role.

Lol that is such a textbook false equivalency, but that's not the point, this is pretty much spot on:

I think pissing off certain people is enough reason to do it. The outrage would be amazing.

"They cast a woman as the Joker?!? Pfft, more like Woker! The SJW liberal agenda is getting out of hand. What next? A female Robin?"

Bingo.

I notice that that reasoning always seems to come up in discussions about genderbending characters in TV/film: just to piss people off. Makes you wonder about the actual motives of the people even suggesting the change. Sounds more political than anything else.

It's just not something I'm clamoring for. Not because I'm sexist or anything like that (I enjoyed the Captain Marvel more than most people tbh) but because I'm just a bit of a purist.

You have to admit though, it IS funny seeing all the super-duper diehard Republicans get all pissy about it.

In certain situations like an Elseworlds scenario (Martha Wayne Joker was kinda interesting), it's whatever

But... And maybe this is gonna sound dumb, but what's even the point of Harley if Joker is female? Do we just genderbend her too, or does that suddenly become a problem when it's the other way around ???

I think that DID happen in an alternate universe called "Thrillkiller" or something like that.

Tell ya what

I do have to admit that Blanchett wouldn't be a bad choice at all if we were to go down that route

I don't think anything really changes between a female Joker/Harley relationship. Regardless of the gender, Harley is still the Joker's significant other that's abused and unknowingly is a pawn in The Joker's game.

I know you guys are big fans of androg Bowie style Joker and honestly Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton (or Gillian Anderson) are way better at doing that than Caleb Landry Jones or George McKay.

Have you heard of this new craze called lesbianism?

Regardless, I really don’t think a sexual component of Joker’s relationship to Harley is all that important, or even that interesting. For Harley sure, but The Joker simply sees her as a pawn to use.

I'm just kind of a purist, that's really all there is to it for me personally.

There's give and take with each choice made, it's all about what you or Reeves or whoever wants to focus on/talk about and what each actor gives to the role.

It didn’t work for Dylan just like it didn’t work when Swinton tried playing an elderly man in Suspiria. I could tell it was a woman pretending to be a man in both cases.

And get that Roman Polanski, Woody Allen lover out of this trilogy (Blanchett). I hate cancel culture but i wonder why she gets a pass.

No, what I said was the equivalent.

So you prefer shock value over logical storytelling. Gotcha.
