The Joker Thread - Part 1

People are like “let’s turn joker in a literal demon from hell” and everyone is lie “yay!”

then I’m like “what if Joker was exactly the same as in the comics but an actress plays the role” and everyone is like “boo!”

1. While I don't think turning Joker into a demon is actually a good idea. . . you know, what *would* be a good idea is if the Joker played the same "superstitious and cowardly lot" game that Batman does. Is he actually a demon? No, we think. . . but he does a very effective job of convincing Gotham in general that he *might be*. Batman might be the only one who is 100% certain, and this would factor into their twisted relationship.

2. I actually am leery of gender flipping villains, not because its an inherently bad idea, but because there are a *lot* of unfortunate pitfalls waiting. It does no one any good if you cast a woman as the Joker, and simultaneously turn the character into a misogynist fantasy, after all.

That said, fantasy casting time? Evan Rachel Wood. She really impressed me in the first season of Westworld. I think she could do an excellent job at both being compellingly charismatic, and also. . . off, in ways both subtle and not. It'd be a slightly different take on the Joker, one that passes often as "merely" a theatrical criminal, until she takes the metaphorical "mask" off and you realize you are sharing the room with an inhuman monster.

( Of course, you could probably cast an entire Batman reboot purely off the Westworld IMDB page, so. . . )

I think I've said this in this thread before, but Toni Collette looks like that Grampa's Joker some of you have talked about. The sharp nose, shape of her eyes, ears...

But for those of you against the idea, don't worry, it will never happen. They're not casting a woman to play the Joker. Particularly against a Batman who beats up bad guys to a pulp.

Bro nobody's grandpa has a Joker bro what are you talkin bout

If Battinson broke her nose, twitter would cancel the entire trilogy.

Anyways, i’ll give you guys credit for coming up with a different name. But I can’t wait til it doesn’t happen.

Do you think Reeves is going to REALLY experiment with Joker? He seems really into the idea of giving us versions of these characters we’ve never seen before while staying true to their spirit. My preference for Joker might be too traditional for what he’s cooking up. I’m scared lol. In a good way.

For his suit(s) I just assume that he either blackmails people into doing his shopping for him or kills people just to steal a few items from their closets and drawers.

Just as I was typing, a screen popped up on tv, from Netflix. It was a shot from Captain Fantastic and George MacKay was standing there looking just like my ideal Joker. Damn son.

He has an interesting look for the character, and he's still in my top 5 choices, but I still struggle to see it a lot because of his grin. I personally feel like Joker should have a fairly wide grin.

I still don’t think there’s any topping Defoe but Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton can all play virtually any role they want. They are acting gods and totally striking. Swinton and Blanchett have both played men and crushed it. I think Joker can be played by any gender and virtually any race as long as the characterization has a white face (paint/albinism/chemicals) AND the character is male. Sure, elseworlds Joker is whatever, but Joker’s gender and how he uses it is a part of the character. I have no doubt any of the female actors above could absolutely slay as a male Joker, just as there are male actors who could play a woman and nail it.
