The Joker Thread - Part 1

Who dat? He looks more like Mad Hatter to me.
Harry Melling

I was watching The devil all the time and I gotta say......I think it could work

Interesting suggestion. :hmm

As it turns out, he's actually co-starred in two other films with Robert Pattinson besides The Devil All The Time... and neither of them were Harry Potter-related (The Lost City of Z and Waiting for the Barbarians), as Dursley wasn't featured in the film version of Goblet of Fire! I also found out that Melling is the grandson of the late, great Patrick Troughton (aka the Second Doctor). Huh.

I need to watch The Devil All The Time for myself soon. Been planning on watching it sometime this weekend. I'll make a note to pay attention to Melling's scenes in the film then.

He still looks more like Mad Hatter to me.

Harry Melling could definitely play Mad Hatter... but I kinda feel like that'd be a waste, just from looking up some samples of his acting. Dude's got the chops to play Joker for sure- especially one going toe-to-toe with Pattinson's Batman.

The funny thing is, I'm not entirely sure what sort of Joker Melling would be if he were cast. Maybe the answer will come to me as I better familiarize myself with his performances, but as it stands, he's definitely got what it takes to play a version of Joker.

Caleb would probably be show-y yet super unnerving.
Mackay could be a more flamboyant yet still crazy take.
Garfield.....not really sure tbh.
Hader would most likely be on the goofier side.
Driver would probably be a bit creepier as well.

Driver would play a copycat version who's desperately trying to live up to the legend created by the original Joker.

Melling hmm. I agree that he looks more like Mad Hatter. Can he do an American accent? Reeves may have him in mind for Joker’s casting, since he’s certainly aware of his talent. Matt references Lost City Of Z when talking about Pattinson so Melling could cross his mind eventually.

Yeah, Melling can do an American accent. Or at least, he does a Southern accent in The Devil All The Time.

Interestingly enough, the more I look at Melling's face, the more I see a bit of a resemblance to Brian Bolland's Joker in there.

In this photo he looks like Jack Nance in Eraserhead. :funny: Personally I don't see Mad Hatter there at all. Kudos to @Astro13Zombie for throwing an exciting new face into this tired old mix of names.

Relatively fresh choice that I'm not SUPER invested in but would still kill it: Walton Goggins.

I haven’t seen Goggins shake his accent. And he’s becoming type cast as the villain so I think it would be a lazy choice at this point.

I kinda like him better for Carnage anyways, but I get what you're saying nonetheless.

I think he would've been able to pull off what Ayer and Leto were trying to do with the more thuggish take.

Understated yet distinguishable seems to be the ticket suit-wise.

Why can’t Joker have a southern accent?
I feel like it's because it clashes with his whole "style" in a bad way. Hamill, Baker, and Epcar all have that very "full-of-himself" faux-british accent. Even DiMaggio kinda toyed with that.

That's more Carnage's thing, and the similarities between the two are superficial. Carnage isn't Joker; they're fairly similar but they're not exactly the same. They're both crazy nihilistic psychopaths and/or sociopaths, but that's about it.
