SDCC this year has already made me lose much hope for DCEU and we had our first brilliant DCEU film coming into SDCC this year too. Pretty disappointed

Just wait til the trailer drops tomorrow and the Aquaman preview, you'll be back on top. Hang in there

Honestly I feel like it may be WB's fault. They could've let the guy do his own Batman film. Like was another Batman trilogy by Matt Reeves even necessary?.. Like we've seen him so much now. Like they could've just let Affleck appear in the Justice League films and well have him act as Bruce Wayne and let stuntmen do all of the Batman stuff, without physically draining Affleck

It's hard to state blame without having all of the facts. I fully believe that Ben was a little shaken after Live By Night flopped, especially since he mentioned how much more stressful directing Batman would be than Live By Night due to fan expectation alone... couple all of that with his addiction problems, relationship issues, etc. and I can see why he wouldn't want to spend the majority of his time playing Batman. Him dropping out of a different movie for Netflix due to personal reasons makes his leaving Batman make sense too.

Part of me hopes that this is all contract negotiation BS and he's using the fan response as leverage for bigger pay when he re-ups for his trilogy with Matt Reeves. I think that's unlikely though.

lol If true, I wonder what happened to that contract obligated 3 pic deal tho. WB simply void that? Margot for instances mentioned she had signed her life for over 9 years or so. lol

People seem to forget...he was also in Suicide Squad. If a 3-pic deal was indeed in place...I'm sure that counted towards it...or Warner Bros. let it count.

Just because of Affleck? C'mon.....

Apparently the sky is falling.

Tomorrow is going to be great with all the goodies we will get.

To a certain extent you're right. All new projects from new directors will inevitably change the narrative. But if our closest comparison is the MCU, then that universe is still heavily invested in the continuity and narrative established over many movies, right back to Iron Man. I'd argue that due to Snyder's perceived missteps, the entire narrative and foundation he has tried to build would be pretty much ignored completely as the DCEU movies move forward. Not a reboot, but a narrative 'divorce' so to speak, that accomplishes more or less the same thing.

That's more due to the fact that the MCU relies on the characters barely changing, kind of like episodes of television procedurals. Snyder's supposed missteps were choices about characterization that were a part of a strategy designed to develop characters and the universe in dramatic and dynamic ways. Things he did, especially the more controversial aspects, were steps on transformational journeys. To view narratives moving on from those transformations as "narrative divorce" rather than organic development seems more like a personal preference.

I'm bummed because it's been such a rollercoaster ride with Ben as Batman. When he was first cast, it was a whirlwind of negativity, by the time BvS came out everyone was super excited about the prospects of a solo Batman movie despite the reception of BvS.

Affleck got us stoked about his directing the movie at SDCC and with his Deathstroke tease, then it just turned to **** with him dropping out as director and now potentially as Batman himself. It's just a bad situation because I think most people were hoping for Ben to have a chance to really knock it out of the park as Batman and now we won't get that chance to prove the haters wrong.

Well, as ominous as it may seem, nothing is certain yet. You can extrapolate the worst case scenario, or you can stay positive while waiting for something a little more concrete, such as an official announcement.

In the interim, a brand-spanking new film featuring Ben as Batman is just around the corner. As fans of his portrayal, we can at least take solace in that.

The DCEU panel isn't until tomorrow and then you will probably get a confirmation from Affleck about what is going on.

I hope he gets a standing ovation when he walks out on stage. He deserves it.

The Affleck news isn't great, but it's a never ending story that maybe needs to come to an end with them parting ways. If that's the case, I'm okay with it at this point given Matt Reeves is running the Batman ship. Batman is bigger than the person playing him and always will be.

Umberto says the Harley vs. Joker rumor movie is a fugazi.

Reshoots ... honestly, if they thought the movie was in danger based on what Zack filmed and these in any way help the movie, fine. Not every reshoot is a Suicide Squad situation where it ends in disaster.

Oh well, Justice League trailer tomorrow ... Aquaman teases possible ... maybe an announcement of a couple films/castings. I'm ready .

Yeah, I think that's the most productive thing we can do as fans right now: send positive vibes his way.

So, what did I miss?

Tomorrow we're all gonna be happy again, guys. The only thing that could possibly get me down is if the trailer itself is disappointing.

Please dont let it be disappointing.

I agree with you, but I also think social media played an integral role in exacerbating the problem, much to the chagrin of fans and probably Affleck himself.

I know it may be the personal reasons. I know it seems wild but WB could have made it easier for him by making him just appear in couple movies here and there without forcing much effort from Affleck. Like honestly if you were to choose keeping Affleck as Batman in the continuity or not getting a Batman film franchise. I would choose keeping Affleck. We've seen so much Batman I could live without it at this point. This is coming from a guy who likes Batman above any other hero even Superman. In that slot they could set up and produce a Superman franchise with Cavill or since they are looking forward a Batman trilogy again. They could produce two more films to complete the Superman trilogy or Flash trilogy or any other DCEU films.

Okay, twenty or so pages in one day are rarely a good sign... what Affleck news are you guys talking about?

Affleck was one of the best parts of DCEU films so far. His Batman is absolutely splendid and I looked forward to seeing more of him as the character in various films to come

The Hollywood Reporter came out with a story that says that Ben's time as Batman is basically up and that JL will likely be his last outing as the caped crusader. Alsothat WB is currently planning on doing the Bat trilogy without Ben in the cowl and is trying to work out a way to "gracefully" let him exit the role for the DCEU going forward.

But DCEU characterizations aren't static. Snyder's characterizations were intended to evolve. So where the characters are at the end of JL is the sort of jumping off point for future storytelling that uses the trials and struggles of the past as the foundation for a brighter future. That is the consistency and continuity that's already baked into the DCEU's Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman.

Like it or not we're already seeing breaks with the Snyder's world with Wonder Woman as well as its sequel possibly being set in the 80's. Now Matt Reeves has pretty much got completely control over this new trilogy he has planed. What's evident with all of this is that the DCEU is still trying to find something of a solid footing to stand on. The foundations for this universe have been flimsy since day one and WB probably realises it now, which is why it would be in their best interests to not try and focus on ensuring continuity and instead just focus on making the films good. Right now continuity and connectivity should be a secondary concern.

You forgot the part where they mention that Whedon reshot the whole movie. :sly:

Interesting... though, this is something that's been speculated before. In any case we'll see.

Yeah but the difference is this is a major, reliable Hollywood publication saying it and not a random blogger or a lesser online publication. In this case there likely is fire to go along with the smoke.

It does add some gravity to it, for sure. I quite like Affleck in this role, but if they do get to recast, I hope they go for an actor of same or similar age, for continuity sake and also because an older, veteran Batman forming the JL has been one of the better moves from WB and a natural extension of character's arc.
