If simply questioning orders accounted to not being a lapdog, then people wouldn't hate the entire Bush administration. But it doesn't matter if you question something if you do it anyway.

Being a lapdog is doing it without ANY sort of questioning to it.

And given that Carol wanted to kick off Ares for violating her orders one more time only two issues ago, you can't really say she has had the chance to do so, when he listened to orders right after.

People hate the Bush Administration because little to no questioning goes on. People just do as their told with nothing to go back against. Carol actually goes about giving the orders for Stark to follow, and made up the teams roster, gives info when needed, and made calls, RATHER than following Stark's order. (i.e.: Helping Arachne, when Stark told her to bring her in.)

Well, yeah, he started out as a Batman analogue, but the 616 version of the character has evolved a lot over the years. I could definitely see him as a poor man's Iron Man now.

Why? Because his flying costume, hook, grappling line, etc. is via technology? Pfft, Casey is being too simplistic. By that logic, Prowler is like Iron Man, too.

Yeah that's my issue with this also, he's more Batman than Ironman, I don't see the similairities.

Did you see how fast SHIELD agents were on Luke Cage's ass the SECOND it came time to register. Where's Al Sharpton when you need him!?

Looking back at the interview, it was more in how Kyle stacked up on the CW ideological divide:

NRAMA: Tell us a little about Nighthawk then. Just some history...and also, why bring him in in the first place? What does he do for you, as a creator?

JC: From the beginning, [Steve] Wacker and I gravitated toward Kyle Richmond as the center of this series, the focal point. He's the one who really wants the Defenders to happen again. He's always been that way... he's always been the one who tried to act as the glue that held a very disparate cast of characters together. And, if you really examine the character closely, you'll see quite a few parallels with the current lightning rod of the Marvel Universe, Tony Stark himself. Wacker and I came at him as though he were a poor man's Stark, in just about every department. But these days, with what's going on in the Marvel U. right now, that can be an interesting character to deal with. Certainly, his relationship to Tony Stark/Iron Man is established right away, in the first issue. In fact, an undercurrent of the entire series is to explore both their similarities... and their differences.

I wonder... if Thor had accepted Tony's offer instead of, y'know, beating the living crap out of him, do you think Tony would've booted Ares' ass of the Mighty Avengers to make way for him? Yeah, Ares is god of war and all, but Thor could kick his ass in a heartbeat and Thor's certainly not a bad war tactician himself.

Tell the truth, I think he'd have left Thor alone after that.

But if Thor wanted on the Mighty Avengers, and didn't want Ares there, I could see Stark asking Ares if he wanted on another team, or to just be left alone after that. Because Ares is cool and all, but Ares didn't even want to be there, and Thor, like you said, is a MUCH better asset in terms of brutal power. As for a tactician, I think Ares is better, but Thor's not bad.

Didn't Ares come up with using a computer virus? How the hell did he come up with that?

These four have been DEFENDERS for long stretches of time, and would make up the core unit. For many years they were the mainstays. Valkyrie has combat knowledge, Hellcat detects magic and is a capable fighter, Gargoyle's also mystical and Nighthawk has the moolah and some leadership experience.

Iceman

He's been on the team before, and as Beast is busy with MC and Angel is pulling double duty on Renegades and MC, this is Iceman's chance to prove his worth not being someone else's funny sidekick. That isn't to say he loses his sense of humor, but without his X-founders to fall back on, he matures somewhat.

Black Knight

He has been an ally of the Defenders and Valkyrie in particular. He allows a mix of mystical combat knowledge as well as science to enter the fray.

She-Hulk

Eh, why not? She joined against the the original Defenders when they became The Order in 2002 to try to take over the world. Provides muscle, has worked with a few of these characters before as an Avenger, etc.

Casey picking COLOSSUS still is an incredible surprise for a Defender. I wouldn't have.

Bendis has chirped that he'd make Ares beat Thor if given half the chance. You know things like power levels and past stories mean nothing to him.

If Thor had accepted Stark's offer and wanted to be an Avenger again, I'd say boot Sentry. Ares may be wonky, but at least he isn't insane and couldn't destroy the entire planet by himself if he doesn't get a sippy cup or whatever Reynolds' problem is. At least Ares wouldn't allow Hulk to rampage for hours/days while he stared at his coffee table until he remembered just the right plot convient speech.

Iceman's been part of the Defenders and Champions before. Unlike Angel or Beast, he actually has an Omega Level power to exploit. Plus, I figured it'd be fun seeing him play off of other heroes when his "bigger brother" classmates aren't around.
