The Mass Effect Hype Thread

One quest that has to be in this game is a chance to go down to some crappy, primitive planet and convince the cavemen there that you're a god with all your technology and stuff, there's no way Bioware would leave something this obvious out :o
Another quest I’d like to see, getting captured by a “superior” alien race and being forced to fight other aliens for their amusement. Then you can escape or convice all the other aliens to rebel or whatever, there would obviously be different ways to beat the quest.

I really wish this were a Christmas '06 game :(

Is there any word on how many DVDs exactly is this going to ship on? I know all Oblivion took was a single double layer DVD (and even that wasn't close to being completely filled up) but this game looks so much more massive. Watching the increasingly dense intergalactic navigation in the trailer was overwhelming to say the least.

on IGN it says:
US: TBA 2006
Europe: January 12, 2007.

1up: 03/15/2007

and on Gamestop: Q2 2007.

It looks like no one has a clue

People on the Bioware boards have told me Aprilish 07 due to a few dev posts that I've never seen, and I've heard other dates, so I don't really know. Anywhere from April to August 2007 seems likely.

Just one DVD, for each of the three games, with each of the inbetween DLC expansions probably being pretty huge, a gig or more.

It's just me telling you that we don't play any of the same games on live so we'll have to wait for gears or something, using my sexy and awe inspiring voice.

Nice. But doesn't that equate HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to being a premature financial waste considering such massive storage capacities won't be utilized at all, especially if games as seemingly massive as Mass Effect can fit on a single DVD? Why even bother with next-gen formats?

Sony is using the PS3 as a trojan horse for Blu-Ray. You see, sometime soon, studios are going to decide whether they support HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. And sony's thinking is, when they do that, they're going to look at the number of HD-DVD players sold, and they're going to look at the number of Blu-Ray players sold and PS3's sold, and they believe that this number will be much greater and will help Blu-Ray to win the format war, getting Sony a ton of money. The Blu-Ray offers no REAL advantage or solves any REAL problems with next gen game development, it's not really there to benefit games at all, it's there to help Sony's other divisions. People telling you that the Blu-Ray is some giant advantage that the PS3 has over all other gaming platforms are putting a little too much faith into Sony's PR.

bioware has some of the most talented and creative artists working in the biz. i love how everything looks grounded in reality and functional, yet far out and unique at the same time.

Bioware has some of the most talented anythings in the biz. Their name alone guarantees this will at least be a 9/10 game or higher.

I don't care what it scores, it'll prolly be my favorite game of all-time. Kotor is close, and I hate turn-based. Bioware = As close to perfection as it get's.

Hmmm... is it three part members or four... I seem to remember four from before, but lately I've been hearing three...

As much as I think I'm going to love this game, it still irks me to have nine party members and field 3... especially when I have to switch them out midfield with little explanation or animation as to where the one went or where the new one is coming from...

That earlier screenshot shows two party members and Shephard, just as you had two party members and Revan/Exile in the KotOR games.
