I'd much rather they go with Rudd.

i don't think he was ever in the running for Pym. speculatively, he would have been up for Scott Lang (or even Eric O'Grady). Rudd seems almost inevitable as Pym, at this point. and i'm, of course, going basically by instinct and knowledge of their past roles. Rudd's more believable as an unconventional mentor figure. JGL and Bell have both played people in need of direction, to some extent.

Can someone explain to me in a nutshell who Scott Lang is? Does he work with Pym? I remember hearing something years ago about Pym and Lang both being in the movie.

In the comics, Scott Lang is an ex-convict who turns his life around and starts working for Stark Industries. After his daughter becomes ill from a heart disease, he plans to try and steal valuable things in order to raise enough money to hire muscle to get into Cross Technological Enterprises, which has the only doctor that can help his daughter. He just happens to come across the Ant-Man suit this way because he was burglarizing Pym's house/lab. After finding the Ant-Man suit, rather than hiring muscle, he uses it to sneak into CTE and discovers the doctor he needs to help his daughter is being held captive there. He beats up the thugs, frees the doctor, and gets her to help his daughter. From there, he tried to return the suit and turn himself in but since he used the suit for good, Pym decided to let him keep it.

All of that happened in Marvel Premiere 47 and 48, To Steal an Ant-Man storyline, which Wright has said the movie is primarily based on.

Hehe, was reading over Marvel Premiere 47 to give Pac-Master a good description of Lang's origin and these pages are almost EXACTLY what happens in that comic-con teaser trailer. The comic-con trailer is pretty much an adaptation of these couple pages. I think it says a lot about the movie and Edgar Wright wasn't exercising hyperbole when he said the movie is based on To Steal an Ant-Man. This may be one of the most direct adaptations we've ever gotten from Marvel. I expect he'll just fill in the blanks that that story skimmed over...which is actually what he said he'd do back in 2006. Just from reading this issue I have a much better...or at least more solidified idea of what the film will be. It also confirms to me that the guy in the suit in the trailer is Scott Lang.

the earth's mightiest heroes cartoon "To Steal an Ant-Man" is still available on youtube. i'd explain further but i'm late for the bar.

The EMH episode isn't really the same as the comic though btw. They make a couple changes to make the story make more sense in modern day (hiring muscle to break into a company to get to a doctor that just happens to be the only doctor on Earth who can help your daughter's diseases? lol not going to work today).

Not to mention that Scott's daughter Cassie later goes on to become a superhero in her own right (codenamed Stature). She's the girlfriend of the second Vision, a member of the Young Avengers, and then Doctor Doom kills her. She could play a role in a potential sequel/spinoff, that could be interesting.

It really irritated me they killed Cassie.

I wonder who will play Erica Sondheim since she is an integral part of the story.

You could still do "To Steal an Ant-Man" without Sondheim being in it; the main thing is that Lang steals the suit to get Cassie the medical help she needs.

But I could see Wright & Cornish change things up by making Janet Van Dyne a doctor, and make *her* take on Sondheim's role in the story.

I don't want Jan as a doctor. If they're vaguely going to go that route and substitute someone else for Sondheim, then they should use Jan's father, who I think might've been a scientist. That way it still keeps Jan as she is (an heiress, fashion designer and socialite) but allows her a connection to the person who could cure Cassie.

What I hope doesn't happen is that Jan becomes Scott's love interest. That is a definite no-no.

Edgar said that he was expanding on To Steal An Ant-Man is his script. Stuff that was a couple of panels in the comic was pages of script.

I think the movie will be a cross between to Steal An Ant-Man and some of the Astonishing Ant-Man spy commie fighting stuff from the 1960's which Edgar mentioned he liked.
I wonder if the main antagonist will be this guy?

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/crossdar.htm

He was the villain in the To Steal an Ant-Man story.
I wouldn't mind seeing Darren Cross as the main villain with and his cousin Crossfire as his bodyguard/chief henchman and Elias Starr (Egghead) as the head CTE scientist who gives Cross the experimental nucle-organic pacemaker. My only issue with Cross is he might come across as just another version of Aldrich Killian.

I don't think they should have Darren turn into a pink hulk/abomination style monster though.

They could have Elias Starr (Egghead) as one of the scientists
Edgar said something about liking villains that are derived from the heroes so that you don't have to take time out to develop a villains power origins.

Many of the villains in previous Marvel films powers or technology are from the same or from the heroes.

Hulk - Bruce Gamma mutated blood creates Abomination and The Leader
Iron Man - Arc and armour technology creates Iron Monger, Whiplash & Drones
Captain America - Faulty Super Soldier serum was used to create the Red Skull

I could see Edgar using villains who use a variation of the Pym particles or Ant-Man Cybernetic technology.

Yep Jan's father Vernon was a scientist. I would probably avoid making Janet also a scientist like Jane Foster who was changed from a medical doctor to astrophysicist in Thor and Betty Ross who is a cellular biologist in the hulk films.

I think Janet being a wealthy business woman, designer and socialite would make her stand out from the rest of the female love interests or superheroes.

Janet works with Pym as his lab assistant sometimes which could work in the movie and she could still be a partying socialite.

Yeah, *if* they make Jan the doctor that can cure Cassie, it'd be almost inevitable that she and Scott hook up, and I agree that it's a definite no-no.

But Marvel's already made some off-base pairings with Pepper Potts taming the irrepressible Tony Stark, and Black Widow (allegedly) hooking up with Captain America. I wouldn't put it past them to match.com Janet and Scott.

Plus, Marvel Studios seem intent on taking everything else meaningful away from Hank Pym; might as well add Janet to that list and make it a clean sweep. :cmad:

To my understanding, Scott Lang is the Wally West to Hank Pym's Barry Allen. I think.

So, the guy who is a superior hero all around and really makes it so the best thing the predecessor can do is "be honorably dead"?

:woot:

"killed". No one stays dead in comics.
That's not quite true. No BIG ICONIC characters stay dead. Batman, Ironman, Spider Man, etc will never stay dead. However, lesser known character are another story, they can and do stay dead. Quite a few of the New X-Men are still dead, those students who got blown up on the bus are still dead, Hulk's wife from Planet Hulk is still dead, etc.

Couldn't she be a rich, socialite, fashion designer who also has a interest in science, if only to be closer to Hank?

Characters like Cassie don't stay dead. She's like Nightcrawler. Or it's life if they killed off Franklin. You know he wouldn't stay dead.

Cassie will probably be back by the time the movie comes out.

I made this pic. I can definitely see Paul Rudd and Rashida Jones as Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne.

Well if they want to take everything from Hank, they should also take away his name and personality and give it to Scott Lang. Then he can be called Hank Pym instead. :oldrazz:
