Ant-Man The Official Ant-Man News and Speculation Thread - Part 7

I don't think Rocket and Groot were as big a risk as people like to pat Marvel on the back for. Yes, the movie was risky, but they weren't the main characters and 80% of the movie's audience were raised on Yoda and Chewbacca.

A guy whose power is shrinking and commanding ants is way riskier.
I can only speak for myself, but even as a long time comic reader I had to be convinced that a talking tree and a raccoon would work on screen. It definitely wasn't a safe move. We could debate how risky it was, but even as a huge fan I had my doubts. But I agree that Ant-man is riskier. I'm really having trouble seeing this be a sizable hit if I'm being honest.

The studio needs to start the marketing push
TV spots with 3 seconds of new footage is not enough publicity for a film a lot of people still don't know about

TV spots, regardless of how much new footage they contain, are effective. The majority of the footage might be rehashed but at this point, with the movie being over a month away, the general audience hasn't been paying as much attention as we have so any footage could be considered new to most people. If that doesn't change in the coming weeks it could potentially be cause for concern though.

I think when people see Ant-man's powers in action they will get it.

A lot of people don't know who Ant-Man is and there is a lack of understanding as well as scope of his powers.

If they manage to capture from the comics what he can do with the full extension of his powers in the movies then audiences will be sold.

For example its rumoured that the Thomas The Tank Engine gets enlarged and crashes through Cassie's wall in the final fight sequence. I bet most people unfamiliar with the character don't even realize Ant-Man can shrink and enlarge other objects than himself.

Exactly. But the problem is the general audience should get themselves to watch the movie to appreciate it. I hope the Marvel magic gets them to watch it and decide for themselves before declaring it a dumb idea. The trailers and TV spots looks really cool and I hope it does the job.

Also there's the 6-minute preview being shown at IMAX showings of Jurassic World this weekend...

I have confident this movie will make money. When I look at the rest of the movies coming out till ant-man and its nothing just mediocre films.

Every person I talk to and explain to them about ant-man they get alittle excited about the movie(mainly for Rudd and McKay) so I think this movie will do fine. And GotG made money cause the GA hadn't seen a sci fi space epic in awhile. And this movie seems to have that same crazy sci fi feel and think the GA wants craziness.

I def dont agree that Ant Man is riskier than Guardians. Out of the two, this film is the one that is more of a classic sci-fi story (see The Incredible Shrinking Man or Honey I Shrunk the Kids). Its been done already, this is just adding a super hero aspect to it.

Actually, Guardians as noted, had the whole Star Wars aspect to it, so even that isnt as risky as people thought.

Ant-Man isnt some surreal concept. If youve seen sci fi movies or read any books, the shrinking person is a staple. Its pretty straight forward. Its also taking place on Earth and involves science experiments. It couldnt be any more All American/classic.

Peter Parker being bitten by a radioactive spider. Tony creating the arc reactor. Cap taking the super serum, Hank discovering Pym particles, Vision being created by a synthetic tissue machine etc etc. It all revolves around science freakology.

isn't that why it's more of a risk? BECAUSE it's been done before?

No, because most people dont remember those movies. Nothing is really original anyway, including Ant-Man. Its just a new way of telling that story.

This movie isn't a risk because marvel never planned a sequel to this anyway. IMO marvel is giving us this film as a thank you the ppl who've made marvel the beast it is today.

Every sign points toward this film should of just Been scraped and never made but marvel stuck to their word and has confidence in the movie. That's all I ask is for a studio to have confidence in a movie whether it make money or not

I notice in all the clips, they make sure to emphasize he has superhuman strength when he shrinks. So for the GA, it's not just "He shrinks and can be defeated by just being stepped on."

Yeah, even though it's technically a change from the comics, I think it's a good change. The analogy to a living bullet is a nice one too just to sell that point that he can be a badass when small.

An ant has no quarrel with a boot.:o

Even in the comics he had proportional strength so stepping on him didn't kill him.

Eric O'Grady's Ant-Man punched a guy in the neck and almost killed him because he didn't realize his own strength.

In the early Ant/Giant Man comics (When he was Pym), I think his maximum strength was when he was 12 ft tall. I could be wrong, but for some reason I remember something like that.

I think the fact they showing off 6 minutes in Imax screams confidence in the film to me.

Dunno, the response to it has been eh from what I read

Maaaaaaan this movie is gonna rock. I've had to tell so many coworkers what Ant-Man's deal is. They thought the trailer looked good but just didn't get it. I explained some of the applications of such an ability and they seemed down with it. I think non-comic people will love this.

Seeing Scott hanging out with his ant pals is gonna be so cool.
