I think I'd go with the theory that the Cross and Pym particles were similar, but different (they are different colors, but maybe they just used a different food coloring). Cross, while good, wasn't the scientist Pym is and being in the proximity of the shrinking of materials (successful and non-successful) drove an already crazy nutjob crazier. Or, maybe, he was just a sociopath to begin with.
