Ant-Man The Official Ant-Man News and Speculation Thread - Part 9

I just saw this for the second time and I thought it was even better than the first time. I wished they would have spent more time developing Cross though. I think they should have showed the chemicals affecting him a little bit more, or a little better.

^I agree. The mental thing needed a little more connective tissue, plot-wise.

If they make a sequel to this, i hope they go all Mission Impossible with it. Globe trotting, impossible lairs to sneak into, and a intense balls to wall villain.

According to the director there is a deleted scene on the DVD/Blu-Ray that shows Cross testing the suit several times and therefore being exposed to the Pym Particles.

There is also a scene that was deleted with Darren Cross and Hope Van Dyne discussing their relationships with Pym and with each other while having coffee, with Cross revealing his plans to carve his name is History through Pym Technologies.

I wish they would have left that in as it would have been important development for the villain. Which was my only real problem with the movie.

I came to accept villains aren't the priority when it comes to Marvel's films. The heroes journey is what they are most interested in.

I think they tried to make up for cutting some stuff with the viral Cross interview

Perhaps they could of extended Darren and Hope's restaurant scene to include some of that cut scene dialogue or could of edited Cross experiment with the suit after the sheep scene.

I think you do get a pretty good general sense of who Cross is and what his motivations are in the film.

I think they are under utilising some great villains personally and I like t see a good villain in a CBM. I think a good villain can turn a good movie into a great one a poor villain can bring a movie down. I think if they had got the villain better in this movie Ant Man would be one of the MCU's best if not THE best. As I had very few other complaints.

I know Cross is not an iconic Marvel villain but some more development would have done the movie a lot of good.

I will say this about Cross though, he came across more threatening than Ultron did for me.

They should have kept those scenes, at least the one with him testing the suit. It's not like they needed to cut run time. Overall, I enjoyed Cross as a villian. That scene in the bathroom was pretty great.

I imagine they cut the scenes because they thought it effected the pace or flow of the movie as like you said the running time for Ant-Man wasn't that long.

Peyton Reed has recorded DVD commentary for the film so I'm sure he will probably explain some his decisions for the movie.

I would like to see some of the movie villains utilized better as well. Baron Von Strucker was wasted and I worry Baron Zemo won't get much of a good showing in Civil war either.

As I said it seems to come down to the people running Marvel cutting villains roles down in the movies because they prefer to focus the running time on the hero. Cross from Ant-Man, Vanko from Iron Man 2 and Malekith from Thor The Dark World all had character scenes reduced for the final cut of their movies.

Marvel's films are very successful and there hasn't been large enough criticism of how they handle villains to make them change what they are doing.

Peyton Reed said he wanted to make sure Ant-Man was under 2 hours; he wanted a tight, fast-paced movie.

Definitely, they have wasted some classic villains now, I really hope the likes of Ultron and Ronan can come back with better showings, with the latter eventually making his turn into a good guy. But yeah they have wasted some really good Villains so far. I hope Red Skull and Mandarin can come back as well.

Those deleted scenes probably made up less than 5 mins, they would have made a huge difference to the run time.

i really hope the theory turns out to be true that the villains with the stones weren't killed... but actually imprisoned inside the stones. (that was apparently something the stones originally did in the comics) and it would explain what happened to Red Skull and Ronan

Me too, as a big Ronan fan, it will be an incredible waste to not bring him back, he becomes an awesome good guy in the comics who is involved in so many major cosmic events, he is not a one and done character.

RS has so much more potential as well, I know that even with my limited knowledge of the character.

And the most frustrating thing about Von Strucker is they got a great actor to play him, then gave him 10 mins of screen time before killing him.

Same here. That scene where hank walks into his living room to find Cross standing there might be the single creepiest scene in any Marvel movie to date. Stoll plays that scene like a stone cold serial killer about to strike and creates a genuinely frightening moment.

In case anyone is interested, Chinese language posters:

Did anybody see Zack snyder bash Ant-man? This dude's pretentiousness knows no bounds despite being a nobody director

At one side you have guys like Joss Whedon wishing DC luck and saying how he is excited, and on the other side we have idiots like this

He dissed Thor when MOS was about to be released and ended up falling on his ass when TDW ended with a better reception and made almost the equal amount of money with 30% lesser budget, I cant wait for it to happen again

He didn't really diss Ant-Man. Sure on surface level it seems that way but if you read his comments in context, you'll understand what he was trying to say. His wording was very poor.

Hadn't seen that until now. Insert rolling eyes smilie here. I'm probably the wrong one to comment on it since I could live the rest of my life without seeing another Superman or Batman movie. I'm far more interested in the "flavor of the month", be it Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Aquaman or Cyborg, than I am in BvS.

Ant-Man looks set to make more than the two solo Wolverine films which I bet no one would of guessed.

Its just his air of pretentiousness, if he had any awareness he would have known that people are more interested in 'Flavor of the week' nowadays than iconic heroes, its the reason why GoGT did the best last year and Spider man the worst

Think people are interested in new stories rather than rehashed ones. They are also interested in good stories.
