That's why I'm like, just say they're brother and sister and not even say a damn thing about it. Adopted? One black parent one white? who cares? Lets see somebody get punched in the face. :o

Didn't they do exactly that with the last FF films?

The hello kitty remark from the other poster was a bit much but now the line has been crossed right into the territory of prejudice. There is humor in the vein of parody and then there are uncalled for remarks. More often than not, the unskilled attempt the former but always wind up performing the latter.

Please don't make such stereotypical comments again. This is especially poignant given the fact that just a few pages ago we were all discussing the difficulty of attenuating stereotyoes. Why subject other people to an ignorance we are loathe to endure ourselves?

Whoa dere, boy.

:o

I'm not gone lie to you man, I didn't even know Jessica Alba was Hispanic until somebody told me.

I always assumed she was a lightly tanned white chick.

for real though! i could so care less about the sibling relativity between the torch and the In-girl than i am more worried that they are going to again pick some pretty boy to play DOOM who wont have his mask on for half of the picture. i mean these dudes look like" Fantastic Four 90210!" hahaha

lrff.jpg

or "1 tree Fantastic four!" the torch looks like the only one who's old enough to shave and vote! i am more concerned about that!
oh and hey brother
why do the bothers in flicks always have to die 1st? Jim brown, the dirty dozen, that brother in highlander,"Darwin" in Xmen 1st class..( not yaphet kotto in "Alien" though.. he died last!) but why is that? and does that mean the torch is going to get "smoked" 1st too!

I knew she was and thought she looked, for lack of a better word, "exotic" in comparison to Evans.

I liked First Class enough, but that **** with Darwin was moronic. How in the **** does a guy whose power is to evolve to survive be the first mother****er to die? Was Vaughn trying to be ironic or something?

Yup, when he died I turned to my brother and was like....this s**t is racist as hell. They killed the unkillable brotha.

I was thinking, "Did no one stop and think about the reactions this would get?"

Whoever made the decision to kill off Darwin did that **** to prove a point. "Unkillable my ass! Black people don't get powers like that!"

I was not into X-Men, well I haven't been an active comics collector for some time. Was Darwin black in the comics?

2) Indeed, Charl. No one has to be politically correct, but I trust that we all possess sufficient common sense to know when we are saying something that can easily be construed as offensive.
Yes, it can be...and quite easily too.

As has been said multiple times besides Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, to the average moviegoer none of these characters are that well known.
So should a studio take a risk on an unknown black character and hope for success instead of changing the race of a more well known character who has a better likelihood for success...even if the race is changed? I think that's my point. Why should we expect studios to take these risks? As has been explained to me repeatedly...the movie studios are in this for profit.

Blade, The Spirit, Hellboy, Tank Girl, Elektra, Swamp Thing...the list goes on. Yes many of the movies I just named sucked but that's not on the characters themselves, rather the $#@&ty teams behind the production.
Hmmmm....I'm not familiar with any of these names except Blade an Elektra. I can't say if the character suck or not.

You really need to increase your reading list if you're gonna putter around with comic nerds. :o

Meh...I'm in the "Ask a Brotha" thread. And like I said...my comic fandom is limited to Superman and DC for the most part. I don't care about Marvel.... Sorry. :o

Well the Spirit and Swamp Thing are DC.

Alan Moore's run on the latter is probably one of the greatest comics ever written. One of those series that elevate the genre as an art form. One of Superman's greatest stories included that freaky vegetable man.

The Spirit is an old character written by Will Eisner. Eisner being the guy who the comics version of the Oscars is named after.

Baby steps....we'll get you yet. :o

I have heard of The Spirit and Swamp Thing... Weren't both of them played by white men in their respective film/TV appearances...lol

Though for you, Anubis, I will take these baby steps... Only for you! :woot:

Swamp Thing's alter ego, Alec Holland, is a White man. The Spirit is also a White male. Incidentally, The Spirit has a sidekick named Ebony White, an incredibly racist caricature of a young Black boy.

Yeah, I'd avoid the classic Eisner stuff, unless you just wanna see how racist comics were back then. Eisner made amends later on though. And Darwyn Cooke's Ebony White was awesome.

I liked First Class enough, but that **** with Darwin was moronic. How in the **** does a guy whose power is to evolve to survive be the first mother****er to die? Was Vaughn trying to be ironic or something?
And he had two black characters, one died and the other one did nothing but change sides. All within minutes of being introduced.

So should a studio take a risk on an unknown black character and hope for success instead of changing the race of a more well known character who has a better likelihood for success...even if the race is changed? I think that's my point. Why should we expect studios to take these risks? As has been explained to me repeatedly...the movie studios are in this for profit.

It worked for Blade three times. No one knew who the hell he was back then besides a small subset of comics fans from back in the Tomb of Dracula days in the 70s. The whole unknown thing doesn't work when you consider how D-list Blade was, and people still clamor for him. He has had a movie trilogy, his own tv series that was the highest rated on its channel, and an anime series. This all with being a character that not very many people knew about.

Also here's something to think about in regards to profit. There have been six movies featuring black superheroes as leads. I'll list them:

Steel:csad:
$16 million budget/ $1.7 million box office
Spawn
$40 million budget/$87 million worldwide box office return
Blade
$45 million budget/ $131 million worldwide box office return
Blade 2
$54 million budget/ $155 million worldwide box office
Blade: Trinity
$65 million budget/ $128 million worldwide box office
Catwoman
$100 million budget/ $82 million worldwide box office

Every single one of those movies made back twice its budget at the box office besides Blade: Trinity which only missed it by a few million, Steel which was **** on top of **** that should have never been made, and the same can be said with Catwoman. The bottom line is that people go to see black superheroes when they come out unless there is just no effort made on the creators of the movie like Steel and Catwoman. And even in the case of a really poor third outing you see a good amount of people showed up to watch Blade: Trinity because they were invested in the character at that point. Had that movie been good it would have probably continued the trend of outdoing its predecessors.

Basically people will go see something if the movie is good, and there are plenty of great black characters in all comic companies. Just look at how popular Michonne is with Walking Dead fans. No one gives a damn about her being black or a woman. They just care that she has a cool ass katana that she owns zombies with. If Marvel were to put a really good effort into Black Panther, or in the upcoming Luke Cage tv show, or even some low level guy like Night Thrasher it would sell well if it looks good enough. I think us fans over think things sometimes in regards to how much the average movie goer cares about certain things.

Everyone doesn't have to be Superman, or Batman, or Spider-man to sell. In fact, don't take this as a shot, but it shows how you're a big DC fan. For decades Marvel has been kicking DC's ass by offering more than 5 important characters. While Marvel rolls out the X-Men, Spidey, Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Fantastic Four, Heroes for Hire, Daredevil, etc. DC is all like, "BATMAN! SUPERMAN! YEAHHHHH!" Just look at their response to Marvel's cinematic offerings. Marvel is like, "We'll let Sony and Fox take care of some other guys, but y'all like Avengers right? Cool. Here's some, but we don't want you to only live on that. Lets get some lesser known people some love. Here's some people in space, and some Netflix shows for you to watch. Oh yeah, there will be Ant-man, and a bunch of other stuff coming in multiple phases." What was DC's response. "How about we bring back Batman, and put him and Superman together! Yeahhhhhhhhhhh boiiiiiiiiiii!"

It's okay to step out of your DC shell now. All the other comic companies have cookies and milk. Like Anubis said. We'll get you some day.:o

In all honesty, I'm just about done with the big two. I've always gravitated toward the lower tier characters anyway. They're just more interesting. Give me the Doom Patrol over the JLA any day.

Valiant is the best comic company out to me right now. They seem to like telling stories with different endings. Image is doing great as well because the creators have full control. Lazarus is straight up awesome, and I think a lot of that is because Rucka and Lark can do what they want without dumb ass editors getting in the way. I still want Waid's Daredevil run to have my babies though.

No one cares about the race changes in X-Men movies which is pretty cool.

Country.

Ghetto would be using said hot sauce for foot play.

Who are you referring to? I'm blanking on any race changes, other than Trask was black in X3 and Sunspot isn't black in the new one coming out. But Both are background characters (if Sunspot has 5 lines I'll be surprised), just like 99% of racebent characters in all comic book movies. All the main cast of X-Men has been white just like in the comics.
