Man, is there anywhere in the world these days where a black American actually can get that kind of respect if we can't even get it here?

Probably not.

There's this interesting series of videos on YT by Cecile Emeke that gives you different perspectives of Black people in the UK and France. One of them (but not all of it due to language)...

A response to this particular video...

^^^^ this, that’s what I’ve been saying to a lot of people when I was in the states.
When it comes to race and everything, I usually talk about it with people from other countries so the language we use is English because *communication* but I’ve noticed that when I want to transfer and translate my thoughts into French, it’s actually really hard because we lack the words, the specific vocabulary, the terminology to have such a conversation. And I understood that the problem was bunch deeper than a poor language, but that it was because we actually didn’t have any safe open space to talk about it therefore there was no need for such words to exist. Which is really sad, and is one of the reasons I don’t feel comfortable in this country.
I mean the States is far from being perfect when it comes to racial dynamics but at least people acknowledge it, the conversation is there whereas we can’t even talk about it because of a lack of vocabulary and a will to wake up that is completely non existant.

Yeah, true enough. I get not wanting to put labels to it and basically say "we are all one" but at the same time you trivialize what I am.

The video series has now moved to the Netherlands.

How do you guys feel about the whole Nicki Minaj/Miley Cyrus thing (and I guess the thing the Taylor Swift thing too)?

A series about "What is pretty?" around the world.

Lebron James looks the same as he did at like 23. Of course he also looked like a 35 year old already back then :hehe:

What is it with black n' milds... I don't get it. either smoke a cigarette or smoke a cigar... or man up and roll a blunt... I DON'T GET THE CRUELLA D'AVILLE MOUTH PIECE!

Raven has been famous since before she learned to read, and child actors have a habit of growing up in a different reality from everyone else. A lot of the time, especially in regard to how other black people are treated in America, she has no clue what the hell she's talking about.

Raven went off on a rant about black people with non-Anglo names, saying she'd never hire someone with a name like Watermelondrea. It sorta flies in the face that

1. Given names are not an indicator of intelligence
2. People don't choose their own names, unless they pay to change them later in life.
3. Disregarding non-European names because they sound relatively unconventional is pretty racist. It strongly implies that names from other cultures are inferior. And yes, despite her hyperbolic example of "Watermelondrea," most unconventional names floating around the black community in America usually have roots in different African and Middle Eastern cultures.

Blame the parents if you think a name is silly. I don't blame Apple, I blame freaking Paltrow.

Raven is carrying on Bill Cosby's tradition of talking down to inner city black folk.

So called African American names like Monique, Chantal, André and Antoine are French names spelt differently.

I don't think people should change their identity to accommodate other peoples prejudices.

The world would be a boring place if every one had the same small selection of names. I remember being school with about 30 kids called James.

Raven-Symoné’s dad pens open letter: ‘Sometimes she says some dumb S#%T!’

To My Dear Friends,

There has been much talk today about my daughters comments on her show The View. People have been hitting me up all night questioning me about her remarks. Let me say this……I haven’t managed Ravens career in over 10 years. This woman is grown, has her own management team, has her own opinions, right or wrong, and is responsible for her own words and actions. A woman wrote to me tonight and said she couldn’t support my book because of the words of my daughter. What she fails to realize is that my book is about teaching your child to believe and achieve. Raven has achieved incredible success, and this cannot be denied!

Children grow up and become influenced by many things, situations and people. I certainly don’t agree with what she said….but she is damn near thirty years old. She’s a grown ass woman making grown ass mistakes. We all have been guilty of this.

I did my best as her father, mentor and career manager. I believe I did a Wonderful job. Aside from this inexcusable gaffe, her 29 years in the entertainment industry has been quite successful, for there have been only an Elite Few Child Stars to last this long and have little to no controversy. For this, I am Very Proud!
Raven is a really Beautiful, Sweethearted, Human Being. I should know. Her Mother and I Love her Very much and will always support her and have her back. Even if sometimes……….she says some dumb S#%T!
