The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 3

It's the final scene of the movie.

I just checked it and you're right it's there. Almost word for word to what that blog and you quoted there. Specifically it's at the part where Bruce and Alfred are in the car and spot Catwoman's shadow in the alley. Thank you. I wanted to hear it for myself from him.

I'm going to give Burton the benefit of the doubt and assume his ambiguous 9 lives aspect approach was done in mind before that scene was done, because from what I understand WB made him include that part at the end where it's shown Catwoman is alive running around the rooftops.

I'm pretty sure Catwoman popping up was a last minute decision and that it isn't Michelle Pfeiffer in the costume.

So it was the finale scene of the movie? I made it through the entire commentary?

I must have been drunk that night?

It's in the final scene where Bruce and Alfred are driving through the streets and spot Catwoman's shadow in the alley.

I wish Burton wasn't forced to put in that final shot of Catwoman. I like the idea he was going for - that ambiguity/mystery. I like not knowing whether she was dead or alive.

As history turned out, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. They never made that sequel with Michelle Pfieffer (although it would be nice to see her in the role again, I don't think it was really needed anyway). All we got was the Halle Berry movie, which BLATANTLY made Catwoman supernatural, which is one reason why I don't associate that movie at all with Batman Returns (or any of the other Batman movies for that matter).

I would've been happy with that being the ending, with the Catwoman "pop up" at the end left out.

Returns and Rises are the only Batman movies that end with Bruce out of costume.

I'll be watching BR tonight for the 22nd anniversary... can't believe it was that long ago!

Oh ****, I had no idea. I just watched Ghostbuster2 for its 25th. I think I'm more obligated to watch BR. I'll watch it later tonight.

Can't believe it's the 22nd anniversary of Batman Returns.

I must give it a watch tonight to celebrate... Still one of the absolute bests in my opinion.

That poster is the best one, IMO. I remember seeing Returns when it came out like it was yesterday. My friends and I went to go see it in our local cinema. It was the beginning of my Batman fandom. I have to pop in the blu-ray tonight and celebrate.

It is a pretty great poster, despite the fact that in the above one they flipped the Catwoman image and threw off the symmetry of Michelle's face... giving her funny looking eyes.

It's a good film but yet I prefer Batman 89 or even Forever to a degree over Returns :o

Anyway Happy 22nd anniversary Batman Returns!

I don't remember that poster, at all. Do you live in The States, Joker?

No, I'm in Ireland. First time I saw that poster was propped up in a window of a movie rental store when it was due out for release.

I would rate the film closely to 89, it has flaws when you analyse the plot too much, but it's more of a grim fairy tale, i actualy like the depressing take on Christmas.

Man, makes me feel old. I was 6 when Returns came out and my Bat-fandom was in full bloom. I had 2 Returns posters on my wall, action figures, McDonalds toys and cups, Returns bedsheets, Returns playing cards. Returns saturated every part of my Bat-fandom back in 92.

It's funny to look back now, fully aware of what a darkly funny, subversive, bizarre, quirky little film it is. But it's what started it all for me.

I grew up with Batman Returns (and didn't even know 89 existed until years later)...so I have fond memories about this one all the time, especially when you have a Christmas themed movie, it plays all the time.

I had the bed sheets. The ones with the Batmobile blueprints?

I see some people talking about how the plot didn't fit christmas, or how Batman doesn't belong in that holiday, but honestly, i think they work very well, it made it a more interesting tale, with Bruce, Penguin and Selena not having any family to spend that time with and Max tying into the more consumist aspect of that time.

It was a complete tale that didn't need previous knowledge on the franchise, and while it had some weird ideas like Penguin running for mayor, it's more in line with Fairy Tales and the early films of the German Expressionism.

Happy 22nd Anniversary Batman Returns! Seeing it opening night in the theater is still one of my fondest childhood memories.

Ha, yeah, they were there. Then it had random placements of Batman, Catwoman and Penguin.
