Trivia

  • Last appearance of the Mad Hatter in this series.
  • This is one of only two episodes to deal with Dick Grayson's past, growing up in Haley's Circus. The other is the two-part "Robin's Reckoning" from Batman: The Animated Series.
  • When Detective Harvey Bullock finds the suspicious circus clown laying on the roof of his police car, Bullock says, "Okay, Mr. Happy, off the car." In the The New Batman Adventures episode "Beware the Creeper", The Creeper refers to the Joker as "Mr. Happy" when they first meet.
  • Bruce Timm considers this to be the one of the worst episodes of the DC Animated Universe.
  • The Joker also impersonated a clown in order to to pull off a scheme of his own in the Batman: The Animated Series episode, "Be A Clown".
  • In the shot where Mad Hatter removes his clown wig, the colors of the wig and his actual hair are switched.
  • In one scene, Peaches the gorilla is shown to break bolas thrown on it by Robin. In the previous episode "Critters", a giant cow, which possessed much greater strength than the gorilla, was shown to be unable to break them.

Trivia

  • This episode is sprawling with nods and homages to various incarnations of Batman's history:
    • The concept of the story was first used in Batman #250 (cover date July 1973) by Frank Robbins and Dick Giordano. However, Bruce Timm had no knowledge of the story when he submitted the idea, and was nagged endlessly about it by the rest of the crew. In the story, three city kids are taken on a camping trip by Bruce Wayne and relate their personal experiences with the Caped Crusader. A similar, but more true to the original, adaptation of this story was "Have I Got a Story for You", the first chapter of Batman: Gotham Knight.
    • The first story comes from that issue; though the concept of Batman being presumed a metahuman is also touched upon in most post-Zero Hour retellings of Superman's first contact with Batman.
    • The second story is drawn by James Tucker in the style of Dick Sprang (though not based on any particular story itself). The use of bright colors, no shadows, expositional speech and large props comes straight from the Golden Age of comic books in the 1940s and 50s, the latter being a favorite motif of the early major writer for Batman, Bill Finger.
    • At the end of the second story, Batman and Robin shake hands and Batman refers to Robin as "old chum", which are both references to the 1966 television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. The handshake was part of the animated title sequence.
    • Between the second and third story, the kids meet Joel, who stands in front of a thrift store called "Shoemaker". He thinks of a Batman with "tight rubber armor" and a Batmobile that can "drive up walls". The boy and his opinion on Batman are a not-so-subtle nod to Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, movies criticized for their homosexual overtones.
    • The third story is an all-out adaptation of the first arc of Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, storyboarded by Darwyn Cooke. The first part is lifted verbatim from a kidnapping that Batman stopped (though the baby is replaced by Robin), whereas the second part is a word-for-word retelling of the finale of the Mutant-arc.
    • The producers considered a third tribute segment focusing on the early 1970s stories by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams which restored Batman's dark overtones. However, they decided that emulating Adams' naturalistic art style would be too difficult for animation.
    • The title, "Legends of the Dark Knight", was used for a series that ran from 1989 to 1993 (and had a second run as Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight until 2007).
  • Both Dick Sprang and Frank Miller were given a tape before the episode was aired. Both liked the handling of their work.
  • The design of 50s Joker was brought back into animated form in 2008 with Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Storyboard artist James Tucker is responsible for many of the character designs of that show.
  • The Walker Music Center was named after composer Shirley Walker.
  • Joker's plot in the second story is to steal the original score of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, a 1892 opera that often shows up in Batman media. Penguin and Veronica Vreeland attended the opera in "Birds of a Feather".
  • The boy Matt is voiced by Ryan O'Donohue, who would later voice another boy named Matt—Matt McGinnis—in Batman Beyond.
  • Kevin Michael Richardson was a fan of The Dark Knight Returns, and was very excited about playing the Mutant Leader.
  • One shot of an explosion that was first used in "Where There's Smoke" is used at several points in the episode. It's first used when the Mutant Leader's torch is blown up, then as Robin destroys a grenade launcher, when Batman punches the Mutant Leader, as one of the first explosions in the cinema and finally when Batman throws an explosive batarang to provide the children with an escape route.
  • Atop the piano, Batman is standing to the Joker's left, and Robin to his right. The goon throws Robin onto the strings almost parallel to the keys, beyond the point where Batman had stood. However, as they land on the strings, Batman is still on the left.
  • Joker jumps on the giant piano's white keys, but many sharp and flat notes (the black keys) are heard.

Trivia

  • Batman/Bruce Wayne has appeared on every show in the DC Animated Universe, but this is the only crossover episode in which characters from another show appear on his.
  • When Livewire says "And the hits just keep on coming"., she is quoting Daniel Kaffee from A Few Good Men.
  • Penguin's line "That's it! Out you three pixies go!" is a reference to the film It's a Wonderful Life.
  • At the end of the episode, in the second close-up shot of Harvey Bullock talking to the reporter on the TV, the TV appears to be just behind them.
  • In the first shot of Harley driving Ivy's car through the mall, all three villains can be seen in the car. However, in the very next shot, Ivy is not in the car, but standing beside it.
  • Livewire should not be able to shock Batgirl inside the Batmobile by shocking it, due to the principle of the Faraday cage: the Batmobile itself would shield Batgirl from any external electric charges, due to the chassis' conductivity canceling out external charges.

It was interesting seeing a crossover between two supporting characters from different shows that weren't Bats and Supes, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the World's Finest three part-er. In the end it was a decent enough ep.

Trivia
  • Last appearances of Nightwing, Batgirl, and Veronica Vreeland on The New Batman Adventures.
  • This and "Sins of the Father" are the only episodes of The New Batman Adventures to feature all four members of the Bat-team (not including Alfred) in the same place at the same time, though Nightwing appears out of costume on both occasions.
  • Elements of the instrumental score "The Promise" from the feature film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm can be heard when Bruce announces his intention to give up being Batman.
  • Linda Hamilton later played another femme fatale, Dr. Stephanie Lake, in Batman Beyond's, "Meltdown", only this time she began a fake relationship with Mister Freeze rather than Batman.
  • Michael is credited as "Michael Vreeland", when, logically, Veronica would have adopted his last name, not the other way around.
  • Bruce Locke is erroneously credited as "Bruce Gilbert".
  • When Bruce is knocking at Veronica's door, the mansion explodes and there's a frame from the explosion of Ivy's greenhouse that comes up only later in this episode.
  • When the cruiser blows up from inside, the first explosion features footage from the Batman Beyond episode "Splicers", specifically the scene where Carmine's Taxidermy Studio explodes and splinters fly about.
  • The design for Ivy's plant henchmen was re-used in the video game Batman: Vengeance.
  • One of the plant creatures resembles Pierce Chapman from the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Birds of a Feather".
  • Batman and his allies apparently don't consider Ivy's creations to be sentient lifeforms, since they exterminate them without compunction.
  • This episode marks the final time Loren Lester provides the voice of Dick Grayson in the DCAU.
  • It is left unexplained why Veronica's state-of-the-art laser gate, which can cut through anything, can be deflected by a simple mirror.
  • The guest list at Bruce's wedding includes
    • Leslie Thompkins
    • Dr. Joan Leland
    • Kirk Langstrom and his wife Francine
    • Summer Gleeson
    • Jack Ryder
    • Zatanna
    • Jason Blood
    • Lucius Fox
    • Commissioner Gordon
    • Mayor Hamilton Hill

Trivia
  • Last appearances of Killer Croc, the Riddler, Two-Face, and the Penguin in the series. However, the Riddler and Penguin reappear in the Superman: The Animated Series episode "Knight Time" and the Penguin later reappears in the movie Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, while Killer Croc, the Riddler and Two-Face make brief appearances as training robots in the Batman Beyond episode "Terry's Friend Dates a Robot", and an alternate reality Two-Face makes a non-speaking appearance in the Justice League episode "A Better World".
  • At the start of the first scene with The Judge and J. Carroll Corcoran, a male version of Lady Justice is seen outside. Rather than a blindfold, he wears sunglasses as a more modern take on the adage "Justice is blind".
  • Right after the Judge says, "May heaven have mercy on your souls, Two-Face. Both of them", Two-Face's "halves" have flipped. His good half is on his left side, while his bad half is on his right.
  • The Judge's mallet falls and breaks after he attacks Killer Croc, but it is intact again when Batman examines it in the Batcave.
