The Official Batman TAS Thread - Part 2

On it's own it could seem a bit cheesy but in the context of the episode I think it's great. For me it's not so much a line but Batman's laugh at the end of Joker's Favour always felt...awkward.

Also the Bat-thumbs-up is meme worthy.

I watched Robin's Reckoning Part 1&2 is a solid episode from the shoe like Two-Face Part 1&2, Shadow of the Bat and Heart of Ice. Loren Lester is Dick Grayson/Robin/Nightwing just like Kevin Conroy is Bruce/Batman. Lester great job with the character.

“Dark Adam West” my butt. There was nothing wrong with Conroy’s iconic delivery of "I am vengeance...I am the night...I am...BATMAN!". He sold that line and it worked in the context of the episode. And I seriously doubt Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, Bale, or any of the Batman voice actors (before/after Conroy) would deliver that line any better than that.

I thought the line was fine in the show, but when I hear him quote it at someplace like ComicCon, it does sound a bit cheesy.

It does work in the context of the episode.

I don't think Conroy really messed it up or anything, it's just an over the top dramatic line delivered in an over the top dramatic way, so it's inevitably kind of goofy especially if taken out of context.

I'd take a Keaton (or even Bale) "I'm Batman" over that, personally.

Well, at least Conroy doesn't wear hossckey padzzz.

That'd likely be because he's a 60-year-old man reciting a line at a comic convention and not Batman in a cartoon. A great deal of quotes will sound cheesy when recited completely out of context.

I know that line is precious to some, I wasn't trying to bash it just for the sake of it and it's cool if people love it. The Joker raised the question and that was easily the first thing to pop into my head. It makes me giggle, what can I say. Bale's delivery often did too, it's all good. I still love both as Batman.

I love the laugh at the end of Joker's Favor.... Batman's giving a belly-chuckle to really insult the Joker, at least I think. The laugh is so broad that it really seems almost sarcastic, haha

The ''I Am Vengeance...'' line is exactly what I was talking about. A relatively cheesy line that Conroy completely owned with a wonderful delivery. It's certainly not something Jason O'Mara could have acheived.

There were a few moments in the early episodes where Batman went a little Adam West. A few moments when he seems out of character, such as in 'The Cat and the Claw' where he whistles after Catwoman and claims to be an ''equal opportunity crimefighter''. :o

And haha PP, good call on the "equal opportunity crime fighter" line.

To continue with my short reviews,

The Under-Dwellers: This episode kinda reminded me of the first TMNT movie--a villain is manipulating kids into doing his bidding. In this case, it's the Sewer King, and he's using homeless children as his league of pickpockets. I guess you could say it's a take on Fagan from Oliver Twist too. The Sewer King is another villain I am not familiar with--no idea if he's from comics or created for the show. It's an ok episode. Feels more like filler to me. Anyone else a little weirded out by Batman kidnapping and hypnotizing a kid to take him back to the Batcave?

POV: Another 'just ok' episode. I like how they are using stuff away from the direct Batman episodes in order to build up the world and breathe life into Gotham but some of these happen to fall short imo. Basic premise, there's a botched police operation that results in an investigation. Three different officers must give their take on how things went. I do like how it showed Batman through the eyes of the cops though.

Forgotten: Bruce Wayne is investigating missing homeless people, receives a bonk on the head and develops amnesia. Bruce ends up on a chain gang. This was another ok episode--entertaining to watch but not a whole lot of Batman in it and the amnesia was just a convenient part of the writing it seemed. There was no real development of character, imo. But it was cool to see Alfred doing something outside of the manor while attempting to track down Bruce.

Be a Clown: The next Joker episode. Here, Joker disguises himself as a clown to crash a party. Unbeknownst to him, the Mayor's son hitches a ride in his van in hopes of becoming a magician. I'd have to say this is my favorite of the Joker episodes thus far. I really enjoyed the dry humor and there's a pretty cool roller coaster chase.

Two Face Part 1 & 2: A two part episode featuring Harvey Dent. I loved both of these. Harvey is running for reelection and is attempting to keep a secret--his split identity or personality. Mobster Rupert Thorne is trying to blackmail Harvey in part 1 and the confrontation they have at a chemical plant leaves Harvey with half a scarred face and Two Face is born. They do a good job here of fleshing out Harvey and his reveal was all done really well. Again, not sure if this matches his origin in the comics but I enjoyed it. I also like how Bruce was using the guilt he was suffering over his parents and projecting that onto Harvey. In part 2, we basically tie up the plots revealed in part 1. Dent is looking to even things up with Rupert and Batman must intervene before they end up killing one another. IMO, part 2 is not as good as the first however the ending was great with the coin scene. I recall Batman Forever using the same Bat-tactic against Dent with a bag o' coins.

Speaking of Two Face Part 1, Conroy's delivery of "Harvey, no.” was awful.

I thought P.O.V was a stunning episode. Some beautiful animation and a sumptuous score by Shirley Walker.

^ Ditto. I loved P.O.V.

I remember as a kid I hated that episode, because being young and stupid, I only wanted episodes with the colorful villains in it. I never appreciated those episodes like P.O.V., 'Appointment in Crime Alley', 'It's never too late' etc for how brilliant they are until I got older.

It's Never Too Late is beautiful! And yeah I was the same way as a kid.

Yeah I realized when I grew up that was one of the strengths of BTAS. Showing us episodes like that which focused on the less colorful citizens of Gotham. An aging crime boss with a son who got hooked on drugs. A slum neighborhood and it's residents fighting to keep their homes. Three Cops, and their perspectives of Batman after encountering him on the job etc.

Great character driven material.

Does Two Face's origin story in B:TAS match his origin from the books?

In the comics Maroni threw acid at him during his trial.

Yeah, the BTAS origin is similar to the one in TDK. Not exactly the same, but similar.

"His Silicon Soul"
Watched the first time last year sometime. I was surprised with the ending, which made for a great ending. As the android had completely become Batman and was upset by his supposed killing of Batman. I actually felt sorry for it. Plus, it's a robot Batman which on its own is amazing. I liked the idea H.A.R.D.A.C. more or less built his own downfall in a way. Strange, cause I never cared much for Heart of Steel.

Well, actually, both origins are right, from my research, I've found that Harvey Dent was also scarred by an explosion.
