Though I can completely understand the argument against not having the trunks. Without them the suit looks, from an artistic point of view, incomplete. Being trunkless also makes the belt somewhat redundant. So, artistically and for functionality, if you're going to have a belt ya might as well through in the trunks as well.

im not sure if anyone agrees or has said this before, but i think this is going to be something close to the cape attachment. i made this really super high quality picture of how i think the belt is going to be lol

I get...strangely aroused when I look at this.

I think that the trunks are gone... and that is sad to me. Not because the trunks are that big a deal... but because they break up the torso and make Superman look blockier. By removing the trunks, you make the entire figure look slimmer... and do you really want a slender looking Superman?

I also hate the golf ball texture.... what is the point? I don't mind texture, but that texture is overpowering. Actually, I think that the entire costume looks like it was done by the same designer that is doing The Amazing Spiderman... and I have issues with that costume too. (mostly the lack of a belt... just 2 arrows basically pointing at his crotch)

I love the neckline, the size of the \S/, the shades they are using. I'm not sold on the piping yet... but to be fair... I really can't see it properly, so I will reserve judgement on it until I totally see it. I'm not a fan of the design of the \S/... but it doesn't bother me that much. I HATE the super embossed/bevelled \S/... HOW DO YOU HIDE THAT UNDER A SUIT AND TIE? I can't work in an airconditioned office without my nipples poking through my layers of shirts (easy boys...I'm a dude) and you expect me to believe that a giant embossed crest can go unnoticed? About as unnoticed as Routh's giant ski boots would go unnoticed under his loafers

Love that they are going with the natural hair look and not the greased back (messed up spit curl that goes the wrong direction) look for Superman. While his hair looks weird in this photo... I'm hoping that HC's natuarlly wavy hair will win out during the action scenes.

I give this first pick an 8 out of 10. It LOOKS AWESOME, but the details are concerning (although less concerning than the official Routh pic)

If this was on the suit, I would rank it above jesus and commander shepard.

I think you're right.... although I think that the piping is much thicker and at more of an angle at the bottom (less straight across)

UPDATED! new piping and angle on the top

before we judge what the ( most likely ) trunk less suit design looks like, let's wait until we see another shot of it. one where we can see the full view of the suit.

For the majority of Superman's existance, a comics accurate suit, regardless of artist interpretation, has consisted of the following:

1.) Red cape with S logo in yellow
2.) Blue bodysuit
3.) S logo on the chest with yellow negative space
4.) Yellow belt with oval buckle
5.) Red trunks with 4 belt loops
6.) Red boots with both a beveled edge and V notch at the top
7.) No discernable texture on elements 1 - 6

Dramatically change or remove any of these and it constitutes a certain level of shift from the trademarked design.

What creates a subjective gray area of opinion are the proportions of each element in a given Superman suit incarnation. Some people like a larger S logo, some people like a specific shade of blue or cape length. Given some people like more exotic versions of the suit that have an S on the belt or whatever, but I'm only talking about what constitutes a version most familiar and most often used. Suit versions that have shifted from the classic elements have been either for elseworlds or anomalies that never became permanent.

I think this is the best one can do in describing a 100 percent comics accurate design. It's just that due to the transient nature of 70 years worth of illustration styles, you can never escape personal preference. The real discussion should be about coming to a concensus on what proportions of the classic elements make a kick ass superman costume, which is really what we've all been talking about for the past 100,000 pages. I know I have my own thoughts on the matter.

Why do so few on these boards carry your logic... The Superman suit has never been broken... Why try to fix it by removing trunks, changing belt etc.

(steps out of the shadows..) Yeah I went back into lurker mode when my post was ignored and the squiggly line drawing of a spider was quoted three times.

(steps back into the shadows..)

The big thing for me is that the trunks help break up all the blue and (like horizontal stripes) helps to make the actor look thicker/wider by breaking the suit into colour blocks. One solid block gives the impression (optically) of thin or narrow or sleekness.... and superman is powerful... not sleek! Sleek is good for Spidey... but not Supes.

As a Batman fan who has suffered through horrible rubber suits for 22 years, I think Supes has it pretty good. Trunks or not, the Cavill suit still screams Superman.

Because that's an opinion not logic. They're not trying to "fix" anything. This movie is a separate interpretation. They're not out to make the definitive Superman to last all eternity. If you want to see the classic costume, it's in the comics and Donner's Superman. Snyder and Nolan want to tell their own story with a modern Superman for today's audience. They're not going to stick with a costume made in the 40s.

So it's change for the sake of it?
