Reeve did well with the short amount of time that David Prowse had to put some muscle on him. Reeve hit his physical peak size wise in Superman III. Routh did the best he could at the time training wise for SR, but he's added quite a bit of muscle in the years since then. Cavill added 25 pounds to the build that he has in Immortals. Yes the suit is molded to highlight all of the muscle groups, but most of the mass under the padding is him.

I actually learned recently that Reeve wore a padded suit in Superman III due to injuries he sustained prior to filming.

If I have to prove this, here's a cool battle of Superman vs Doomsday
Or Superboy Prime here, here and here.

But my real point about using a more decisive belt was, to make this armor like suit look easier to put on and off. I still find the product cool.
 My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek. Time to finally use this emoticon, :o from now on.

. I like this suit just fine (the Cavill one, not the hideous armor from the ) but there is nothing better than the Superman suit. It is the quintessential superhero .

Eh, I prefer the classic suit with some very minor alterations, such as gold lining around the red part of the S-Shield, very tiny crap like that.

Could it have something to do with the lawsuit, though? Like how they own the classic S-Shield, could they end up getting the trunks in 2013, too? It would certainly explain the sudden costume changes the character's had recently.

Yeah, it probably involves the lawsuit as well, as much as people deny it. What the heirs will own as of 2013 as per the lawsuit is:

In 2008, as a result of the ongoing legal battles surrounding the 1999 termination of copyright transfer, one-half of the copyright in the Superman material originally published in Action Comics #1 reverted to the heirs of Jerry Siegel. That material includes:

- Superman's running faster than a locomotive
- Superman's leaping tall buildings at a single bound
- Bullets bouncing off Superman's chest
- Superman's "distinctive full-length blue leotard with yellow belt & red briefs"
- A reporter co-worker/romantic interest named "Lois"

In 2013, the remaining half of the copyright on that material will revert to the heirs of Joe Shuster. This will leave DC and Warner Brothers unable to continue using those elements of the character unless they choose to come to a financial agreement with the Siegel and Shuster heirs.

It would be nice if we could stop talking about bulges and the guy who played Superman in a previous film. MOS section. Not Returns. Costume Section. Not dude package section.

I'm still not convinced that any changes are because of the lawsuit. Afterall, the Action Comics Superman is golden age style except for the suit. It seems counter-productive, since that brings Superman even closer to the version of the character that's currently in dispute.

If I'm not mistaken, in the lawsuit, Superman would lose the CAPE and keep the trunks...so I'm sure the lawsuit has nothing to do with the change in suit...people keep telling themselves that for whatever reason. I guess to make it easier to accept that the trunks are gone...at least for now

Well sorry, English is not my mother tongue, so I still have hard time to catch all the subtleties of it as for the tone of the text argumentation

It's my fault. I should have been more clear.

I've been reading the comments from people for weeks now, and now that we've actually gotten a good look at the details on the suit, I thought I'd give my 2 cents.

As a lifelong/die hard Superman fan, I was a little disappointed to see the trunks get scrapped. Once I got over that, my main area of disappointment came from the fact that there's just too much blue in the costume. Yes, I know that he still retains the belt (to a degree), but it would have been nice to see some area of red added to the midsection to help break up the blue.

Having said that, I don't hate the suit. It's apparent to me that they're going with a very "alien" look to the material, and what they've come up with, seems to fit that while still maintaining the majority of classic elements. No idea why every director has to change the "S" for their respective movies, but again, the core element is there.

Cavill definitely looks the part. The guy is jacked, and definitely looks like he stepped out of a comic book. I'm a big Snyder fan, and I'm excited to see what he does with his movie. I'm hoping that he's the one to resurrect the Superman franchise so that we're all able to see a series of movies for years to come.

Right I've really warmed up to the new suit design & I was actually trying to think of things that I personally didn't like about it & I think I've found something.

I don't like the gauntlet like things on the end of his arms. I can't help but think if it was just the fabric from the rest of the suit that it would look better..

I think I figured out why he has gauntlets, but this is just speculation, so bear with me.

I think it's always looked kind of strange when these guys bulk up for comic book roles, and have these massive arms, and yet have puny wrists. Look at any of them, Thor, Cap, Superman (Reeve and Routh)...

So, my thought is, the gauntlets are there to make his forearms seem larger, so they don't look like they'll snap when he gets into a fight.

I think the gauntlets are just an aesthetic thing -- an addition to the overall evolution of the suit from simple tights to Kryptonian uniform. They do beef up his wrists though.
It'll be interesting to see how he changes from his street clothes into his costume. Does he just press his buckle?

I'm really hoping that for things from the Reeve films that have now become iconic, or staples of the genre (Jor-El's dialogue, the shirt rip, etc.) that this film either does the polar opposite of, or only covers very briefly (like the one-page origin story from All-Star Superman).

Because people are only going to compare it to the Reeve films, and there really is no way to out-do them (even if it is better).

I personally love the suit and look of HC. Remember guys in 2 years when this movie comes out - Supes would of had 2 years in the redesigned suit, collar, cuffs, armour!! So to see a suit that looks non armour, with a classic neckline, i am happy.

Stand HC next to Routh, the returns costume looks weird and boring and even less of a superman costume! IMO

The Reeves suit, as awesome and true to the original 'look' just wouldn't last in todays audience, again IMO.

People are gunna see a good looking actor, beefed up with a cape and S on his chest and see Superman!! i can't wait for the film!

One of the things I find interesting about this new costume is this: from the abdomen up it's damn near dead on from the classic costume. The little thing they did with the leading edge of the S is reminiscient of the emblem of the golden age. The remaining half of the costume is very alien looking. Then we have the boots which are dead on perfect. In the tight close-ups, the long shots, and action sequences, this cosutme will be almost indistinguishable from the classic.

Don't get me wrong, I love the classic costume and still think the Chris Reeve costume is almost perfect, but I'm OK with this new design. It's fresh and I can think of it as an elseworlds costume. Not digging what they did with his hair, though. Cavil has what I've always thought Superman's hair was ... curl. The stubborn forelock that we're used to seeing on the man of steel is just that.... a stubborn forelock that falls when he gets active. it's not an affectation like in the Singer film. To bump Cavill's hair up like that and lock it in with product is a mistake. Still, it's not a deal breaker for me.

That's really cool. I like the suit already, but I bet it's really going to pop when its lit and color corrected. Synder loves his saturated colors, so I'm sure that red is going to be really hot in the final version.

I personally love the suit, its a good combination of the classic and the re-launch.

But my MAIN peeve is that looking at the design, it doesn't look like Martha Kent made it. Her making the suit was a nice touch to Superman's character in general. Fitting that his adoptive mother would turn the blankets giving by his real mother into his costume. Best of both worlds.

Martha Kent didnt make that suit because she couldnt

That pretty much sums it up for me too
