I personally love the suit, its a good combination of the classic and the re-launch.

But my MAIN peeve is that looking at the design, it doesn't look like Martha Kent made it. Her making the suit was a nice touch to Superman's character in general. Fitting that his adoptive mother would turn the blankets giving by his real mother into his costume. Best of both worlds.

It was so ridiculous when Martha made the suit for Clark to wear (in the Smallville series) only to have Jor-El steal it and encase it in ice.

I personally love the suit and look of HC. Remember guys in 2 years when this movie comes out - Supes would of had 2 years in the redesigned suit, collar, cuffs, armour!! So to see a suit that looks non armour, with a classic neckline, i am happy.

Stand HC next to Routh, the returns costume looks weird and boring and even less of a superman costume! IMO

The Reeves suit, as awesome and true to the original 'look' just wouldn't last in todays audience, again IMO.

People are gunna see a good looking actor, beefed up with a cape and S on his chest and see Superman!! i can't wait for the film!

You can take some of the best looking images from the Superman movies with Reeve and Routh and photo-shopped pictures, and just take a set photo of Henry Cavill's suit without the proper lighting or even the cape, and you can tell that the suit looks better. At least in terms of making him look powerful and making the suit look more modern.

In terms of making Superman look "super" I think it is better. He looks more powerful than Reeve did or even Routh who has on a thicker layer of padding that Reeve probably did. The suit has that layer of muscle that looks so realistic that on screen it will look like a second skin. It will give him a very muscular and powerful "dry" look. Like the look of a bodybuilder before a competition when they have that dry hard look to them. It is the first time I think that Superman is going to look that muscular (with padding or without) that looks so natural.

bodybuilder wears trunks. :oldrazz:

so you buy the suit because it looks muscular? ya, i guess so, the muscular look does help, and they wouldn't mind the other 'strange' superman look.

I am VERY skeptical of the new redesign in the comics lasting 2 years.

I think if it would have looked like cloth (which it does) but more like cloth like the Christopher Reeve suit with that same design, it wouldn't look very good. If you take away from the suit that alien looking material, and take away the muscular look of it, you have a cloth suit on a big guy. That is the same we had with Christopher Reeve. If you take that stuff away from it, then it would most likely look pretty awful. I think the material and muscular look is really what sells the suit.

And if you take away also the muscular look, and texture of the suit, then you would definitely need the trunks. Otherwise it would look like a darker colored version of this:

Outside of what materials were used to make each suit, I don't find any one more modern than another. Unless "modern" means whatever is perceived as "cool" at the moment.

As for how powerful they look, it's just a matter of a combo of body building, padding, suit design, and muscle shading for the appearance of definition.

wow. this looks real bad!

It would be nice if we could stop talking about bulges and the guy who played Superman in a previous film. MOS section. Not Returns. Costume Section. Not dude package section.

AMEN!

It's getting old, annoying and isn't going to change anything. There are how many pages now? ...based on hair, bulge, trunks and colours.

I understand that change is hard to accept once in a while, but dragging it out for pages and pages is ridiculous. Not to mention we have only seen spy photos of the suit. Wait til you see footage, and THEN judge.

That's the smartest thing I've read on these boards in a long time. Very true and I agree.

I honestly can't imagine that ever, ever happening.

Everybody knows what Superman looks like. Whether he switches his costume to something with a collar and armor or crazy electric blue/red, his definitive look will always remain in the public's eye, and will forever be what be associate with "Superman."

Exactly, I think that the design of the muscles on the suit and the padding is what helps this suit look so cool. Without the padding and that texture and over all design, the suit would look a lot like that with different colors.

I think it's a good looking suit and definitely better than SR just in terms of the shield alone, not to mention better boots and neckline. The Reeve suit was good for its day but the material is a little dated. Tights are difficult to incorporate into live action. It's why almost no modern superhero movie since 1978 has used them. Plus we have newer more modern materials.

If this movie was all cgi like Mega Mind, I think you could have a suit that is much closer to the comics of 2 weeks ago. For some reason it works really well for animation but in live action begins to look like a halloween party.

Every movie wants to have a certain look to their films which is why we had as many bat-suits as there are movies. Every film had a different suit, even from Batman 89 to Batman Returns (rubber to plates on the abdomen). Out of all the directions they could have gone with this suit, I'm glad they chose this one. It's a good suit that looks real and is faithful to all elements of the classic suit with the exception of the trunks which I kinda miss.

There's a fine line for these kinds of movies to walk. They need something that looks like it could exist in our world and yet still fantasy. If Superman did exist, he probably would wear something much similar to the smallville stuff, which was completely realistic but also very boring.

To wrap up my thoughts here, the suit looks modern in terms of material, classic in terms of style and awesome in terms of muscle definition (padded or not). It's most of everything I wanted to see.

I think that is what makes it modern. The materials, the right design and padding. That is not the padding they used back in the day of the George Reeve movies, or even the padding used for Superman Returns. That padding looks very natural.

I think as someone pointed out earlier on here, it looks like this kind of suit.

christopher reeve neevr had padding. That was all him.

They planned on having padding, but he was so unimpressed he hit the gym with David Prowse.

He was still working out during filming that they had to refilm earlier shots as he looked so different size wise.

I thought they said that he used padding in Superman III because he had suffered some sort of injury during training or filming.

That's right. A new generation of fans is about to be introduced to Superman in his new costume. In 2013, Cavill's Superman will further expand the trunk-less Superman costume unto the psyche of millions.
By the the time the MOS sequel hits, the traditional costume will seem weird and awkward to the majority of Superman fans.

I would not have believed it a few weeks ago, but yes, the Returns costume suddenly looks like a Party City Halloween costume reject.

The Reeves suit, as awesome and true to the original 'look' just wouldn't last in todays audience, again IMO.

You're absolutely correct, it's not just your opinion. I'm sure Snyder and co. selected this costume because it is the right suit for this man at this time.
To have had Cavill wear the traditional costume would have potentially made MOS a box office failure.

Yep!

I'd be amazed if she did :hehe:

She obviously couldn't make this new suit, unless she works for Nike or Oakley! Maybe she will just... design the suit? But then that screws the idea that it is some sort of Kryptonian formal wear...and then we should not see any other Krypton fashions that look like that.

I think it comes down to the fact that these are different times and "modern" interpretations are necessary to keep the character up to date unless they are making a period piece.

Like Star Trek, they HAD to update the look and systems of the film "beyond" that of the other ST films that came before, even though the earlier films are set further in the future because WE now have real devices and products that are cooler and more modern and advanced than the early films had.

Star Wars is another example. The original New Hope, is lame (tech, prop and effect wise) next to the last film made. If Lucas remade the first film, I'm sure he would not keep the old looking effects and props simply for "nostalgia sake"

Even THOR was updated... with standard Hollywood black leather . Not my preference, but he did have a nice cape!

like DK7 and others have said, we will have to wait to see some real action footage to see if it "works".

Yeah, the materials make it look more "modern." 30 years from now if there's another Superman film, the MOS suit will likely look as "old" to those filmmakers as the Reeve suit looks to us today. So, to me it's odd to say the the MOS suit is "better" in terms of how "modern" it is due to the materials available/used.

I doubt it can get any better because if the muscles underneath the cloth look real, then the only thing they can do to make it look more real than that is have it look like the material is perhaps cloth. As far as making it look real, that looks like a real big guy in a tight suit. That is about as real as something can look. How much more realistic could the muscle look underneath clothing than that?

I just wish we could get on shot of HC standing up straight! I think that would tell us a lot more.
