Does anyone else think he looks a bit like a sci-fi Henry VIII?

Apparently Henry Cavill is still on The Tudors, even as Superman :cwink:.

I showed the Jor El pic to my wife....she wants to know what sword and sorcery movie he's in.

It's a scholar's robe.

i dont like it. the design is overworked. it looks cumbersome to wear. it doesnt look very scientist-y.

What exactly was scientist-y about Jor-El's other designs? You never looked at him and automatically knew what field he was in.

I've always considered the Kryptonians to be a clean and simple people design and architecture-wise, so it is kind of strange to see costumes with such ornate detail.

I think it's clever they're referencing Renaissance design. That's a real time when it was common for people to wear tights and capes.

I'm really hoping that there's a scene where Jor-El puts out a cigarette butt (with the butt hitting the ground in slow-motion Snyder-style) just after launching Kal-El off into space and before Krypton's destruction. I guess that'd be pretty epic. :hehe:

Other than that, I can appreciate Jor-El's look in the movie. I kinda like it.

Return of the Fruit Roll-Up Cape :awesome:?

It looks very ceremonial. God, the mystery is killing me now.

I'm sure someone somewhere feels like crowe's outfit ruins the point of the Superman mythos but I really dig the look. Even better, he's got the blue underneath the robes.

verdict: awesome

Meh, it's an okay enough design for what they're doing. It's pretty clear they think they're too good for Alex Raymond-style science fiction designs anyway.

Someone in another thread said he looks like he wandered in from the set of Game of Thrones. That's about accurate-I guess that's the cool thing right now.

One thing I know, they didn't look at any of the Superman comics that actually ****ing sold when they designed their murky Kryptonians where everything is black or muddy blue.

previous depictions might not have screamed "scientist-y", but they at least had more of a sci-fi edge to them. which this one does not. as said above, its more of a sword and sorcery look. which doesnt work too well for the character, in my opinion. i get that they were trying to do a sort of scholars robe, but their attempt just looks garish and gaudy.

i think something more simple, utilitarian, and sci-fi would have been a far more welcome look for the character.

I really like the look of Jor-El; it's easy to see how relation it's design elements have to the Superman costume.

It looks to me like if Jor-El took that elaborate gown off, he'd just be wearing the regular Superman costume--which suggests to me that Superman's outfit may represent more of the "average" person's attire on Krypton, where Jor-El is wearing something ceremonial on top.

Going by that alone, I would gather that the two layers complement each other not only by design, but in social status as well.

The outer layer looks to simply be ornamental, while the "basic" undergarment functions for more formal purposes. Had this not been Jor-El or if I were to ignore his position as a scientist/scholar, I would have assumed the outer layer were similar to the Jedi Robes, only to be removed while engaging in combat.

I guess at least for the men, it's common to have those suits that make them look cut.

Looks kinda like Godfall armour.

Does this mean Superman's costume is actually Kryptonian long johns/underwear? :o

What if Krypton was like futuristic... steampunk? lol
