I know that some folks felt that the lack of red undies would help not draw attention the crotch, but how could you NOT look at that package...even if you weren't asked to? I think this really illustrates that the focus is actually worse...even though I kind of respect the approach.

I don't ever really notice it until someone says something. Probably true for most people. Assuming they keep the same "guard" in the suit, his package is the same size/bulge whether it's covered in blue or red.

I know I'm late to this discussion...haven't been here in a while...but I'm still trying to figure whether it's inherent in the design even if you've never seen it, or because the red undies are so ingrained into us as a visual reference that we automatically feel the 'lack' of them. I'm leaning more towards the former with this particular design...I've actually seen fan-versions here with no red undies that doesn't look as 'incomplete' in that area. Something about this one seems to somehow be emphasizing a mans' lack of dress, rather than a male form, if you will.

But unlike some people, Superman having a big package isn't something I see as a problem...

as a straight man the crotch doesn't bother me at all, we've all seen a dackin here or there its nothing new

and its really not obtrusive because i feel the blue helps blend it all together

Yeah, it's not so much the actual bulge...he's man after all. It's just that the area draws more attention to it now, when it was supposed to be the opposite. To be fair, I think it's also the material/patterns.

Again, not so much the actual package...any guy would be sportin' the same 'issue' ...just how graphically, I think the eyes are drawn more to that area than before with the trunks. On this design, at least.

I think it goes back to before the new suit was revealed and we were all speculating...in that a complete redesign that was very different even in format from the 'traditional' would have ultimately been a better choice. the more the similarities, the more some of the differences can become distracting, so to speak. For this, I think they should have done more...larger areas of a different shade of blue perhaps, and so on.

No, the bulge is big. It's so big it looks obviously fake (and it is, as all these guys where the guard in these suits). It has nothing to do with whether there's red, blue, or pink cloth over it. It's just a bulge so big it creates a shadow on his body.

You know, one of the things that sadly we won't get answered until 2013 is, along with the story and script, is how they were able to agree on this redesign on Superman, and not have that be one of the reasons for the film to reach the level of development hell.

I'm bringing this up because, well, we all know (or somewhat, as misconceptions go) on the past redesigns when it came to Superman on film dating back with Superman Lives and Flyby, while skipping Returns. Some were good and others weren't, but learning about those possible films, the suits that were going to ultimatly used ranged from tolerable-acceptable.

Basically I'm wondering what led to this redesign and how and why it got accepted ultimatly compared to previous redesigns. But again, I know we won't get anything until 2013.

If anything, I'd say that the two key aspects that some have had issues with in regards to their believability in being effective as a means of disguise have been both his Red Shorts and his glasses. Other superheroes have the luxury of finding a way around certain dated costume elements when it comes to transitioning their looks onto the big screen, but I'd say that Superman is perhaps the hardest to due to the diverse opinion as to how one should approach those aspects imho.
