It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Even at its most basic terms, realism in the form of physics can be applied to superhuman feats. Integration is always an option.
Giuntoli actually read for the role, and got past the first auditions and if I remember correctly, was a finalist or close to being one. He does have an interview somewhere that talks about it.
