People are so happy the sales are bad but Capcom could just retaliate by putting this series in the closet like it did with Onimusha, Dino Crisis, Final Fight...etc. I hope the same people will be happy if that were to happen

Capcom being vindictive is what got us in this position in the first place.

Not really. They were trying to do something that they percieved to be better for the series. It wasnt a vindictive move. Cancelling the Megaman games and trolling fans by putting the overweight 80s reject in SFxTK was vindictive

I don't think the sales are a reflection on the quality of the game at all. If anything, it's a reflection on this games marketing and then most probably Capcom's image at large. They were very ambicious hoping to reach 2 mil because despite all the series to their name, their rep is kinda dirty at the moment.

when was the last time hey had a hit on the consoles? The original Marvel vs Capcom 3? It seems after that every game they've released has been a relative dissapointment in sales according to their expectations. This is the only game of theirs, Ive actually looked forward to and had hope for. After UMVC3, I stopped buying Capcom games but I feel compelled to go out and get this to support NT and what they have done

Well I dunno, Nolan North in Uncharted would definitely be up there...

I might have to agree with the new guy on this one. Deff one of my fav performances in a game.

The existence of Platinum Games pisses them off. Bayonetta pisses them off.

You think this game exists bc Capcom aimed to go after Platinum Games? Really? Thats the most bizarre conspiracy theory Ive heard regarding this game yet

I think they changed the character Dante and the world of DMC out of spite most definitely. All you need to do is look at what has been said by many involved. Ninja Theory has made it clear they were headed in a more traditional direction until told by Capcom specifically not to do so. Change for change sake. Platinum Games' offer to "fix" DMC is an obvious dig. This was an attempt to show them they could do it better and it has backfired.

This is not unheard of. Look at the Tecmo and Ninja Gaiden 3 and the quick about-face they made with DOA5. They were stupid enough to ruin Ninja Gaiden 3 because of a need to change up what Itagaki created. Then when it bombs suddenly DOA5 starts feeling a lot more traditional Team Ninja.

Nah, I don't by that at all. You're just making a huge assumption there because YOU can't see a justifiable reason to change.

There are people on the other hand who think the series has benefitted from change.

The question isn't whether the change has been good for the series. Though considering the sales, I'd say it obviously hasn't.

It is all about the progression of this game. How it went from DMC5 to this. How Ninja Theory even admitted that they were headed in a very different direction then what we ended up with. Capcom's recent backtracking. The fact that this rather short and buggy game took a very long time to make.

I love how people ignore the possibility of vindictiveness in these situations when we have seen many examples of this in sports and entertainment. The rush job on X3 just so they could come out the same summer as Superman Returns.

This took a long time to make? Development was 2 and a half years. That seems rather standard, especially starting from the ground up

I suggest a play through Max Payne (all 3), LA Noire, and the original Metal Gear Solid.
And Assassin's Creed, and that and that and that

I agree, the kind of praise TP got for his performance as Dante is a bit exaggerated

First trailer hit in 2010. Game wasn't released until the beginning of 2013. It was more then 2 and half years. Also, considering the length and the huge gaps in the narrative, they either work really, really slow, or they made this game more then once.

Think Resident Evil 4, which had at least 4 versions (The first version became the original Devil May Cry) before they got the final game out.

the first trailer hit in fall 2010 and game came out in Jan 2013. The development was roughly 2 and a half years , give or take a few months. Considering this is a brand new venture, it wasn't that long at all. Were you expecting them to throw this out in a year? I bet it they released it in less than 2 years, people would complain that they rushed it

I love the tidbits reminding me of Mortal Kombat in this game
Flawless Victory not if you don't get hit
And then the slow motion finisher reminds me of the slicing using blades in Shaolin Monks

Trailer hit at the Toyko Game Show I believed. It had the actual concepts done. You think they did that all in a few months?

Not sure what you mean by it being a brand new venture. Max Payne 3 was a brand new venture, where they had to create and seriously revamp tech to make their game work. Why it kept disappearing. There is nothing like that about DMC.

By the way, it does feel kind of rushed out.

and Tokyo Game Show was in the fall

what was the point of mentioning MP3? It only weakens your argument as that game was originally supposed to be released in 2009. Development for that was at least 5 years and NT didnt take nearly as long

I don't think we would have ever gotten a regular DMC game, had DmC been successful. So it doesn't matter. Whether it had been successful or a total bust, I knew the regular series was over and done with.

Tyoko Game show is in Sept. And they had the concepts down by then. So with 4 months left in 2010, they already had that much done. That is my point. That had to have been working on it for awhile at that point. They would of had to be only a couple of months into production. Clearly that wasn't the case. 3 years in development at the least.

The point of Max Payne 3 is that it had a very valid reason for why it took so long and it was shown in the game. Just look at the shooting and the physics. They are insane. Nothing about DMC indicates it took as long as it did to be made. Not even close. It isn't even a long game. It is in fact quite a short one.

Another small article.

A headline suggested by a colleague: “Devil May Cry fans destroy brand out of spite.” That about covers it.

Seriously? What about fans who don't like the game are nothing but a vocal minority? Can you really accuse fans of destroying a brand, when Capcom tried to reach way beyond their build fan base? Remember when Capcom at first actually wanted to sell 5 Million copies, by reinventing it? Let's say that number even factored in the 2 Millions sales of DMC4. Now let's say those 2 Million fans didn't buy the new DmC, because they didn't like the direction change. But if Capcom's gamble had payed off, say might still have sold 3 Million copies, because they reached an entirely new audience. They would have claimed it's a major success, because it sold more than the previous game, and they would have told longtime fans to suck it up.

Well, that didn't happen. DmC didn't catch on, despite the install base of consoles being a lot bigger than it was 5 whole years ago and practically no competition in January. But fans who were ignored, neglected and mistreated, get blamed for the failure of a game, that I'm pretty sure of, didn't factor them in anymore.

Dont get the DMC4 bashing, besides the backtracking I loved that game. Thought the combat was sick and dug the story for the most part. Switching styles on the fly was a good leap forward. Overall It sold well, got good reviews for the most part and its fan base was still going strong.

I blame Capcoms handling/marketing of the whole thing and some of the interviews NT did. Alot of it never sounded convincing that it was in good hands and besides some of the level designs I never saw anything worthy of a change till I played the demo. That first trailer with Dante smoking was complete crap and gave a bad impression from the get go. NT taking shots at Original Dante and some of the Japanese visual styles didnt help either.

I thought this game is exactly what this franchise needed. The old four games were growing tired and stale, 4 was a terrible game. Any of the 4 never had a character you could like or root for. They were all just bland, absolutely bland. Thank God for Ninja Theory coming in and sprucing the formula up a bit.

Completely disagree. I enjoyed DMC4 and DmC quite a bit.

There was nothing stale about the gameplay in DMC4. And the cutscenes destroy the cut scenes in DmC. If you were never a fan of the original series then of course you would prefer DmC.
