The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

Then why the hell did professional casting directors cast some un-confident Canadian who can't act as they're lead in a potential blockbuster franchise? He's not popular to young people, so you have to throw that one away. What else is left other then him fitting the bill in their eyes.

See: Batman and Robin.

I'm sure those 'professional casting directors' thought those actors just fit the bill in their roles as well.

Obviously they had a reason for casting Chatwin. I'm not sure what it was, but I'm pretty sure it was beyond the fact that he kinda looks like Goku in the face.

Beats me. They aren't very professional if they cast someone who knows next to nothing about Dragonball.

honestly...i think that's their biggest reason for casting him as Goku.

George Clooney is a huge popular actor, thats the reason they casted him.

So a perfect casting is based on the actors prior knowledge to the source material?

Not necessarily, but it helps. The biggest question is has Chatwin watched the show or read the manga? My guess is neither. Look at Marsters. He's supposedly been a big fan of Dragonball for awhile and doesn't want Fox to screw it up.

Sure it won't hurt but it also won't be, and shouldn't be a significant influence for casting someone. I'm sure the actors researched the manga and anime after landing they're roles, but before is really a non issue.

exactly...im pretty sure most of the actors in superhero movies are non fans, they just do the homework and act.sometimes the results are good and sometimes they suck..but thats how it works

Didn't Heath Ledger know pretty much nothing about the Joker when he was cast in The Dark Knight? I think we all know now that you don't HAVE to have prior knowledge to a character to get it right.

Honestly, Chatwin deserves a bit of faith from us fans. This movie has been in development hell for years and now we're getting it. We may not all agree on the casting, but what's happened has happened. Let's just be happy the movies being made. Even if the bombs (I pray it doesn't), it could atleast put the potential blockbuster franchise known as Dragonball into a more knowledgable director, therefore creating the ultimate DB movie in the years to come.

I don't mean to sound like you dont have the right to discuss the casting, it's just my opinion.

So, has it been said whether Goku will be an alien or not?
I don't see a tail, and I'm guessing the were-monkey transformation is cut.

Goku will be an alien. Tail is unknown. Oozaru is said to be in the film, his physical appearance is uncertain.

i wasnt too crazy about the way the script described the whole transformation.

I've said this before. All you'll get are idiots that don't understand the concept of comparison.

Heath Ledger had a very good idea of how he wanted to convey the Joker. even if he didn't know Joker's back story or inventory of trick weapons, he had a vision of he how wanted to portray him that fit perfectly in line with what Christopher Nolan wanted to do. i seriously doubt that Chatwin had a strong grasp on how he wanted to play Goku when he auditioned.

btw, saying that you don't need to have prior knowledge of a character in order to play him/her is like saying that you don't have to have prior knowledge of a book in order to give a report on it. you may be able to give that report, but it won't be very substantial or informative if you don't read or study that book.

heh, alright.........i see how it is.

False. Heath Ledger had prior knowledge before he was cast. I don't know even know why people keep comparing Ledger to Chatwin.

Not true. Directors have been known to tell cast member(s) to ignore source material for inspiration. Aaron Eckhart didn't look into any of the Batman graphic novels for inspiration when portraying Harvey Dent/Two-Face; in fact, Nolan has him read up on schizophrenia and other multiple-personality disorders. This was confirmed in numerous video interviews with Eckhart. I'd say his performance was pretty substantial and, because of brilliant writing and the correct guidance, informed. Would I expect Chatwin to pull off what Eckhart did? Not really.

I don't get it either; I guess everybody is expecting some sort of Oscar-winning performance?

if that's true then he's an exception...not the rule. ideally you want to gain as much knowledge of the character before portraying said character. the cast from Lord of the Rings didn't avoid the source material, they embraced it.

Eckhart might not have had to read the comics or watch the cartoons to get a good idea of who Harvey Dent or Two Face was, but Nolan pointed him in the direction he wanted Eckhart to take. that direction sprung from the source material that he and his brother read. so, no, the actors don't necessarily have to study past renditions of the character, but they need to have a good idea of how to bring the concept of that character to life. Nolan's Two Face isn't exactly the Two Face from the comics or the cartoon, but the CONCEPT is in tact because Nolan told Eckhart to study the concept of having two faces. Eckhart didn't need to delve into the past Two-Faces because the director did a lot of the work for him. however, we all know that Nolan is an exceptional director....which is why an actor dishing out a great performance that stays true to the character without reading the source material is an exception.

I for one think that Justin Chatwin will do a good job.
I have no problems with the cast, just some of the changes in the storie.
