Unfortunately, some of the reaction to Gobby's suit in the movie clouded the perception of how accurate his personality was.
True. The fixed expression for his mask is a little goofy/odd I guess, but I don't think the design was bad. There are worse out there. At the end of the day, Raimi gave us what it says on the tin - the Green Goblin.

Unfortunately, some of the reaction to Gobby's suit in the movie clouded the perception of how accurate his personality was. Visuals are certainly important, but establishing the character's outlook and modus operandi are absolutely essential. That's what the first movie did, and set the tone for the specter of the Goblin being something that permeated Peter's world more than any other villain, even after Norman was gone.
Was that his character in the comics? I'm not really sure. I was mainly talking about how he had this character arc, when a lot of villains don't in movies.

But I can't say I took issue with the costume. I don't really get how the latex mask would work with it. I can justify him having that mask built for him. But I can't really justify him spending hours applying latex to his face. At least not in the movies. That's why in my tasm 3 story I had the goblin face be a hologram that's projected over his face (Harry didn't become the goblin in tasm 2 in my story). Of course he becomes very goblinish at the end when in desperation he combines the dna of spiderman, lizard and electro to supercharge himself up to get the venom symbiote from spiderman.

.

Yes, that was Norman in the comics: obsessive, paranoid, judgmental, controlling.

I know that a lot of Spider-Man 3's "controversy" is how Venom was handled, but at the very least, I thought he looked really good in the film. These gifs solidify that for me.

The only big thing I would change in the character design are the yellow claws.

Cool. Doesn't change that this would be one of them.

It would just be like a silicone mask. They move with your face. Obviously once he puts it on, it cuts to the actor in makeup. Movie magic

I respectfully disagree. I can name a few scenes from the same film that are worse than this one, in my opinion.

*cough cough*Bernard*cough cough*

On the other end of the spectrum, I really love the Green Goblin in SM1. Never hated the look, as many claimed to.

Agreed. I like GG's look in the first Spider-Man movie, especially the mask.

Amplified by the fact that later on, VINO states that he has a symbiote replicated version of Spider-sense, yet he could somehow neither see or sense the big man with the hammer hand waiting for him in the alley. :lmao:

I wasn't a fan of how emotionless the mask made Gobby's face, but the construction of the character's personality and Dafoe's execution were magnificent. Dafoe doesn't get the credit he deserves for how skillfully he brought the character to life.

You know, I'm an optimistic most the time. But I get the feeling no other Spidey series is going to reach Raimi's for me personally. They really had something great with the cast, theme tune and overall feel. People freaked out about SM3 back in the day, and the cord was pulled. And now, we're onto the third filmic timeline.

For me, it's the combination of hilarious/awful elements that makes this scene stand out.

- The overly cartoonish shadow effect
- The fact that once Sandman sees that this isn't Spider-man and is instead a black-suited, Spider-man esque creature, he just turns around and begins to casually walk away before deciding to listen
- Topher's awful voice/dialogue
- "I wanna kill the spider, youuuuu wanna kill the spider....interested?"
- I loved Sandman's response. "....yeah."

I know this scene was inserted as a result of something else being cut, but it doesn't make it any less awful, contrived, or artificial...much like the Bernard scene.

To be fair, many awful superhero movie scenes came from SM3. :hehe:

Disagreed. It not a great scene but not one of worst. Just bit rushed. Spider-Man 3 is not bad movie it is pretty good. Just has too much things in it. Movie people like Joss Whedon also like it because they know it good too just flawed.

I agree with this.

I'm very much looking forward to MCU Spider-Man, but I doubt the magic from the first two Raimi films will be replicated, in my opinion. Marvel Studios seems to be very aware that Spider-Man 1 & 2 are what they need to strive for, though.

As for Spider-Man 3, I think it is obviously a flawed and disappointing movie, but I don't hate it. I don't think it was a movie that warranted Sony cutting ties with Raimi.

I didn't like the film but I agree with this.
