The Dark Knight Rises The Official Jim Gordon / Gary Oldman Thread

Gary Oldman is absolutely outstanding. I think the top three actors of all time (yes, I'm serious) are Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Gary Oldman.

Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

That was kind of early in his career (2000 to be exact). He didn't have the impressive resume then to pick & choose the "meaty roles", but I'm sure he took it as a paying gig. I'd be very surprised if he took a similar role now.

The movie he was in BEFORE Shaft was American Psycho, his break out role. AP proved he was an amazing actor.

And The Oscar Goes To.... Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight.....

Eh... my feelings are mixed on that one.

Did he deserve it?... Hell Yeah!!!

Did the academy give it to him for all the right reasons?... Im thinking not.

Ehhh, all-time? That's a bit hyperbolic, Oldman's certainly one of the best actors ever to work in Hollywood. Bale and Depp are some of the best actors currently working as well.

All-Time though? There's just such a limitless list of great screen and stage actors that it doesn't seem fit to have such a strict, and strictly modern, top three.

Also, the man rocks a killer mustache. Doesn't a good 'stache get any love?

I always thought Gary was a great actor from his performance as the mutilated dude in Hannibal :hehe:

Harsh Times is still probably my favorite Bale performance to date

Correct but they were released only months apart. Not enough time between films to gain the reputation he deserved for that role.

AP was the 1st film I noticed him in and had a man crush on him since. :oldrazz:

You seen Oldman in True Romance? :P

Oldman and Bale are both actors that love taking on challenging roles and they have proven they can handle them. So I don't blame them for being in a stinker every once in a while...it goes with the territory of being an actor who takes chances.

"No, Allen."

No, I'ma have to catch that. I was sold on Oldman after seeing JFK. Even though it wasn't a huge role, time-wise, I don't think there's ever been another human who could possibly embody LHO like that. Unless of course, you believe he was a decoy all along :cwink:

Sure... if Gary Oldman died. :whatever: And before you all jump on me, I'm not saying he DIDN'T deserve the Oscar - because he DID - but the Academy would not have recognised it had he still been alive. They'd have waited to give him the Oscar for something else.

He would have been recognized and he would have won if he was alive.

Eh. I wouldn't say he's a bad actor, but I wouldn't say I've seen him in anything that's been brilliant. Granted, I haven't seen a lot of Gary Oldman films, but I would hardly call his roles in BB, TDK, Red Riding Hood, The Book of Eli, The Unborn or Harry Potter brilliant.

Maybe because all but 2 of those are bad movies?

I don't know why this shocks people but it oh so very true...

Had Heath been alive it would've been a Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp nod.

He better win for TDKR or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I have no doubt he'll at least get nominated (at the very least), if it is as great a role as Alec Guiness' was in the original series. That in addition to Oldman's comments that it is in his opinion his best performance.

He would never say anything like that about any of his performances. He said it's probably the greatest role he's ever played.
But I also hope he gets nominated at least. Hell, he can't be snubbed anymore!

I know there's a lot of Gary Oldman discussion now but I want to bring it to the Jim Gordon side and discuss the trailer!

Bruce's hand is on his bed in the trailer, and his sleeves suggest he's wearing a suit. He's also not speaking in the Batman voice.
HOWEVER there's a VERY quick flash in the trailer that looks like a blurry Bruce. Jim isn't wearing his glasses when he speaks to him and from what I've read in at least one comic continuity he's "practically blind without them". He may not find out after all.

That said *I* personally would love it if by the time the movie ends Gordon knows. They've had 2 great movies without him knowing and I think it would make everything feel a bit more finished if he knew. There doesn't even need to be a reveal scene, but someone on here has posted a quote from the comics or something where Gordon says, "What makes you think I don't already know?". And that's really you need.

Daniel Day Lewis is entirely an Indie guy(outside of Nine) while Johnny Depp has become a only a big budget Hollywood guy. Now both are great actors but Gary Oldman is the perfect median between the two.
