Yeah, but this isn't 1986 lol. You know they're updating Superman right? Chances are that includes Lex.

But he doesn't have to be the same age as Superman. His physical state doesn't really factor into it much anyway. His mind is what's important, and he's fine as long as he's not old enough to be senile.

if we have an older lex get someone like jason isaacs who while almost 50 does'nt look like an old man and still looks bad ass

Regardin Pitt, I agree with everyone, but it's really never going to be on the cards anyway, I'm sure.

I just saw that pic and thought 'Oh, he doesn't look too bad for it actually'.

Never seen him suggested before tho, because he's TOO big for the role IMO. Same with Clooney. They've grow above and beyond the villain in a comic book movie at this stage in their career.

Jason Isaacs, Clive Owen, Dominic West and even Daniel Craig are much more likely candidates IMO.

The problem is, it's impossible to call because we have no idea which Lex they would go for - businessman or scientist? Fat or thin? Old or young?

Without knowing that, we can only suggest what WE would want.

pitt is too big of a star that i only see brad pitt acting and not the character

Even though I kind of agree with this line of thought (in some cases and for some roles) isn't it going to be the same with Crowe playing Jor-El or Costner as Pa Kent? Or in the Batman flicks, I didn't see Lucius Fox I only see Morgan Freeman doing his best Morgan Freeman impersionation. Same with Caine as Alfred. But, I would much much rather have them playing those roles than some unknowns or lesser profile actors. Often big name stars can really add something to the movie, some sort of weight and credibility....I dont know. When I first saw Morgan Freeman in Batman Begins it put a smile on my face even though of course I knew he was in the movie but there's a reason most big movie stars are so big, aside from their acting talent, it's their aura or whatever you may call it. Adds something special to the screen.

Though I dont know in the case of Lex. Depends on how he is written. If he was written very well and as a complex personality, I'd love to see DDL more than anyone else. But that guy is so picky about his role's he'd never do something like Lex Luthor.

As for Pitt, he's a fantastic actor. For far too long he was being dismissed by alot of people simply because of good looks. And even though I think he could do great, I would rather not have him as Lex.

.

Agree completely.

Michael Cain as Alfred works, not because he plays an incredibly good Alfred, but because he IS an incredibly good Alfred when playing himself.

And a lot of the time in other films, characters are actually created with the big name actor in mind. Because people WANT too see the actors natural character... That's how they enjoy them.

The thing about playing a villain, is that you are never playing yourself (unless your evil I guess :p).

Some actors do play a lot of villain roles, but it's not them playing them. It's fine, and I wouldn't mind someone like Isaacs because of that. But it is a bit predictable.

However, when you get someone whose played a lot of different roles but has never outright been the major villain of a film, you have the opportunity to surprise the audience.

Just like Ledger IMO.

I would think that an older Lex has more limitations story-wise. Younger Lex could be more physical and engage Superman in a power suit.

Thought I'd throw this name into the ring. I'm a big fan of the show Hell on Wheels. The show boasts an impressive cast, in particular Christopher Heyerdahl, who portrays the character of The Swede, the best villain on TV right now, IMO.

I thought Heyerdahl might make a great Lex or Brainiac (Brainy might actually be a better choice because I think he's really tall). Apparently he also played Zor-El on Smallville, ironically. That shouldn't hurt his chances though, since Amy Adams also appeared on that show as Deer Eating Fat Suit Girl.

No Pitt, Clooney or Damon. All are too well-known and won't dissolve into the character, though Pitt is a talented actor. None would do it at this point in their careers.

No to Dominic West. I love Punisher: War Zone, so for me he already played a great (over-the-top) supervillain as Jigsaw.

Heyerdahl looks like he would make a good Brainiac, because he's strange and alien-looking with a weird-shaped head. Not as Lex though.

No to Craig. Again, too well-known, already has an iconic character as Bond, and I just don't see him as Lex.

Patrick Stewart - no way. Too old and too obvious (the only reason anyone is thinking of him at all is because he's famously bald).

I do like the idea of Clive Owen: has the right look, as does Jason Isaacs. Daniel Day-Lewis would be amazing, but I don't think he'd do it.

Just going to throw a few wild cards out here...

What would people think of Mark Wahlberg? Wahlberg may not be the world's most talented thespian, but he does play a convincing badass. I don't know if he could pull off the part of a brilliant scientist, but I have no doubts he could bring the cold corporate businessman Lex to life, and he can certainly appear ruthless and highly competent.

Armie Hammer? Seems like a young Billy Zane, but taller and arguably a better actor.

Two options I would be much more enthusiastic about...

Josh Brolin
. He's proven himself a talented actor who's adept at disappearing into a role.

Sean Penn. 'Nuff said.

Josh Brolin would be awesome.

My favourite is still Patrick Wilson.

Heh. Have you ever seen The Happening?

Yeah.

That's what happens when you try and cast Mark Wahlberg as an intellectual. He would be a horrible Lex. Brolin is a good suggestion though.

Haven't seen it, but let me ask: is it funnier than watching Sylvester Stallone try to play an intellectual in Tango & Cash?

You people are overlooking the greatest thespian of all. Nicholas Cage. He is God afterall or a vampire. I forget which.

He's both.

He gets so much crap but he's actually a very good actor (when he wants to be). Raising Arizona, Wild At Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Bad Lieutenent II.

I dunno if I could accept Cage as Luthor... I'm still holding out that he'll eventually play the role he was born to play - Superman!

:p

patrick wilson is my favorite pick for lex too. he's young, charismatic, and talented.

next pick after that is jason isaacs.

if hardy hadn't been cast as bane i'd have him as my top pick.
