The Official Lex Luthor Casting Thread - Part 7

To be fair yes Cranston is bald but if they were to go for an older Lex he'd be badass cause he has the acting chops. Tbh I don't even think Lex will necessarily be bald and I don't think he needs to be.

I still want Matthew McConaghauy, Jason Isaacs, Michael C Hall or as an out of the box type suggestion Idris Elba.

Cranston has played a bad guy enough, it's time for some new blood for this, literally.

I'm standing by my Mark Strong choice till I hear something official. ;)

Instead of Armie Hammer for Bats like some are saying - and I agree he'd be a solid choice for Batman but maybe Armie Hammer for Lex (just heard this suggestion on a podcast and it's pretty genius.

Please no Mark Strong. He's like the de-facto movie villain guy now. This series needs to think out of the box.

I think McConaghauy would be great and what the sequel would need for a lex actor. He looks great in the wolf of wallstreet trailer.

Note to all: whether or not an actor is already bald will have absolutely no bearing on the likelihood of their being cast in the role, nor does it make them inherently more suitable for the part.

Billy Zane/Jason Statham/Charlie Brown etc are not better choices for the role than, inter alia, Gary Oldman, DiCaprio, or anyone with hair.

See, I really feel they are going to throw us for a curve with Lex, just as they did with much of MOS. I am betting that Luthor has hair for like 75%-!00% of the movie. Enemy or ally to Superman he will lose his hair by the end of the film or in a '89 BATMAN Joker "Mirror?" kind of mid credits scene.
I agree to an extent, except that Lex clearly has something akin to paranoia or an inferiority complex, which forms part of his loathing for Superman. If he is simply the guy who has everything, it is difficult to see where that comes from. I think his attraction to, and jealousy concerning Lois is a good source of motivation in that respect.

I am going to take another opportunity to trumpet Vince Vaughn as Lex and Lena Heady as Mercy. I am talking to myself, but hey.

Good sir, if you are implying some kind of LEX/SUPERMAN/LOIS love triangle situation, let me just say: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR VULCAN MIND?! .....(Jersey accent) No disrespect.

But kudos on the Vince V. thing. It's way out of the box. But it's so crazy... It... just... might... work! Now.... If only... I could reach... My... Utility belt.

Not a love triangle, and certainly not the cornerstone of the plot; but there needs to be something in Lex- a failing, or a weakness- that gives him his merciless, vengeful attitude to life. Lois is just a useful shorthand for that.

Press the button that summons Vince Vaughn!

I may not be 100% on board with Vince V. but I think he has a great villain in him. The movie that convinced me of this? No, not the PSYCHO remake. STARSKY AND HUTCH. Watch it. Everybody else is in a comedy. He and Bateman are acting like it's a serious 70's drug/crime thriller. Even with those crazy outfits.

Looks like they are going for a safe bet...... Mark Strong.

I do like suggestions of VV and MM though. Non-conventional choices. But with lots of potential.

Just glancing over some of these choices for Lex Luthor and all I could do is shake my head. I think these guys should play Lex Luthor:

Supes will never see him coming :woot:

But seriously though, I believe Lex Luthor should be played by an A-lister because Lex is an iconic character in the same tier as The Joker who had Heath Ledger play him. Plus, having someone of high status like they've done with Russell Crowe might help it validate the film and add much needed momentum to get it to good heights for a Justice League movie, in the same way Ledger propelled the audience into wanting more Batman.

On top of that past portrayals of Lex Luthor have been a little too cartoony in my opinion, we need to go with a little more sinister and a Lex that plays more mind games and constantly sizes up his opponents.

If we're going young Lex, I'd say Matt Damon.

If we're going old Lex, I would like Daniel Day-Lewis, but that's a reality we'll never see, so I'll settle for Daniel Craig:

Matt Damon is, in my opinion, the most overrated actor of his generation. Craig could be interesting, though.

Has he ever had to act with an American accent? It's not important, but I'm curious.

They have to dumb down Luthor a lot since this Superman would be no match for his usual intelligence level. The Wolfman/Byrne Luthor would be fitting.

Yep, Cowboys v Aliens. Crappy film, but the accent was fine.

Unless they want Luthor to make Superman look like an idiot to mess with his public image.

or is he too happy-go-lucky? he might be able to pull off a terrifying Lex and show the audience a side we haven't seen him play before.

So what kind of Lex do you guys think we're going to get?

Before I'd seen the film I'd have said it'd be businessman Lex for sure, but now maybe not. And I say that because it seems like they are trying to play a lot with the sci-fi/fantasy/comic booky aspects of the mythology, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a more mad scientist Lex or even power suit Lex in this universe.

And I think the man they hire for the job will say a lot for the kind of interpretation they are going for, so I'm really curious to find out.

so many possibilities for the sequel - i would like to see lex really get under supermans skin, somethin akin to how columbo would be around the main suspects haha like a dog with a bone , everytime superman gets a break lex is there to knock him down - i wanna hate him, but love him at the same time, someone like john glover from smallville out of all that shows faults he was awesome, (but id want a younger actor say about 35 to 45)

See, I'm wondering if they're going to go older a la Chris Cooper in Spider-Man.

I think Lex will have a number of strings to his bow. He could well be an inventor and a business magnate at the same time, and figures who are powerful in the commercial world find it very easy to be influential in the political sphere, too. It would be very easy to turn Superman into a lawbreaker, by requiring superbeings to be registered or to submit themselves to scientific research. Equally, Superman is very vulnerable to the question frequently leveled at gods: 'why did they let this happen'? Anyone as influential as Lex could make life very difficult for someone like Superman, who abounds with good and slightly naive intentions.

i hope not we have seen nothing but old actors both spacey and hackman both were 47 when they were lex and looked it and even looked older

i want a younger lex or atleast one who looks younger for instance guys like jude law or matthew mcconaughey are guys in their 40's but still retain a certain youthfulness to them

I love Cranston, but I want him as Jim Gordon in the inevitable Batman reboot.
