The Official Lex Luthor Casting Thread

As I said in another thread, I find it pretty stupid how so many Superman candidates are dismissed because they're too old, and yet when I go to the Lex Luthor casting thread it's full of guys who by the same standards are too old to play Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor and Superman are the same age so we should be looking at Lex actors who are in the same age bracket that the Superman actor will probably be in. I think Tom Hardy was the first legitimate possibility that gained popularity here and was also in the right age bracket, but unfortunately it looks like he's going to be in Batman (probably as The Riddler), so we can forget about him playing Lex Luthor unless that falls through.

I'd like to see some more creative suggestions than just the usual assortment of old dudes, though. Hopefully this is not the Hackman version of Luthor, which would mean a younger, suaver Lex who is also a savvy business man.

Good point. I'm thinking they'll skew younger with Lex Luthor too. Think about how in order to step out of the shadow of Jack Nicholson's iconic movie Joker they went in a sharply different direction, the first step of which was casting a surprisingly young actor for the part. The same trick could work with Luthor, in trying to get out of the shadow of the also-iconic performance by Gene Hackman (a shadow Singer's Donner tribute wouldn't let Kevin Spacey escape from).

I dont think Lex should be older than Supes by a huge margin, but I do think Lex should be somewhat older.

Yeah, I'd say a few years older. If the Superman they cast is in his late 20s, Lex should be in his early-to-mid 30s.

Spader can do anything. Except the Lex I want. That was Spacey in a successful businessman who wants nothing less than the Presidency-type Lex. (As opposed to a menacing version of what Hackman had already given us)

If the 35 to 40 age of supes is true, then how old should Lex be.
I dont think I want him anymore than 5 years older than superman myself.

While Machiavellian business tycoon and CEO of Lexcorp Lex Luthor would of course be my ideal choice for his portrayal in this film, I'm in the minority where I don't think it would be the end of the world if they went the "super-criminal" route again. If they did it right, and really got into Lex's character and motivation, it could still be different enough from the Hackman version to feel fresh.

It wouldn't be the end of the world, it would just make it a bit tougher on the actor. Spacey and Hackman are tough to escape.

Michael C. Hall is a wonderful actor, who could be a great Lex Luthor, and actually a possible dark horse for Superman, if they're indeed skewing older.

by who's standards? yours?

Old Lex = old Superman, and I'm pretty sure they're going to cast someone age 35 or younger for Supes.

In the comics, Lex Luthor and Clark Kent were friends as teenagers, which means they're about the same age. Likewise, the actors playing them have to look like they could plausibly pass for being the same age.

Daniel Craig for Lex Luthor . . .
I wouldn't mind that, but many like him better for Metallo (we don't know if he's in the movie at this point)

I actually wouldn't mind if Lex has a bit of an English appeal btw. If he seems refined and charasmatic, maybe the public opinion would be more split on Lex vs Superman. Lex can make a legitimate concern such as "Superman is an alien, we can't trust someone this easily with God like powers who flies above us."

He can't come off as hating him out right, but more of an intellectual opinion that someone with this amount of power needs monitored.

I don't think I'd want a thick English accent, but just a bit of that appeal from English actors would work.

Great Superman can beat the English villain with his "American Way"...:awesome: :woot:
