You know, now that I see this photo of Depp bald, I actually think he'd be great for Luthor, because, although being a handsome A-list movie star, he fits the small, weak, angular physical embodiment of the character that I envision, explained here.Johnny Depp

There's only one stipulation with Depp for me: I think with these comic book movies it's important to have an actor that physically embodies the inner representation of the character, because comics are a visual medium and they're also basic morality tales, and it's far more visually dynamic to have characters that look like the morals that they're representing than not. Of course, with a movie, you must cast a good actor as well, but I always feel that both can be attained, looks and acting ability. You don't have to sacrifice one. Because of Luthor's evil depravity and embodiment of the opposite of everything Superman represents, an angular, conniving, almost sickly-looking actor (where do you think the bald head came from?) is necessary, so I feel that Depp would have to wear a prosthetic nose to make it arc outward and look angular, like Death's scythe. This angular look, which has been drawn in the comics many times for Luthor due to its extreme contrast to Superman, perfectly embodies Luthor's character (and is featured in the below panel). The interesting thing about Depp's look is that he has every other characteristic of the below rendering, except the scythe-like nose.
If he adopted this look, complete with a scythe for a nose and a bald head, it would be similar to Heath Ledger donning clown make up and a scarred smile for The Dark Knight, looking almost unrecognizable and allowing his performance to step into the spotlight and define the character, rather than his good looks. And, like Heath Ledger, Depp is an actor of such caliber that he could probably lend a Superman film the same buzz-earning, evil transformation that Ledger gave Batman.
Picturing an uglied-up, conniving Johnny Depp as Lex Luthor going up against a glowing portrait of heroism in Superman is a pretty cool image, I think. I'd like to see it. Plus he's A-list and he'd put butts in the seats. I don't think you can ask for more than that.
