The Official Lois Lane Casting & Discussion Thread - Part 5

I wasn't really advocating Seyfried get the role, I was saying that if they went the quirky route she'd be a better choice than Wood.

Wood was only passable in the Wrestler to me but then again I wasn't a fan of the whole long lost daughter storyline in that film. I just think that Wood is completely wrong for the role on all levels.

Fair enough. I do think she's a bit too young for the part (though the casting of Blake Lively in GL shows that probably doesn't matter to WB). As for The Wrestler... I agree with you there... I love Aronofsky but I thought the long lost daughter and stripper with a heart of gold subplots were pretty weak and not up to par with his usually stellar work. Nevertheless, I thought all three of the central actors (Evan, Mickey and Marisa) did really well in their roles.

ERW though... I thought she stood out in The Wrestler; saw some range there... a hard edge in contrast to the more innocent characters she played in Whatever Works and Across the Universe.

I think she was incredible in her early work too. Both 'Thirteen' and 'Pretty Pursuasion' blow me away. She's just got this incredible presence, and the ability to play such a range of different characters.

Some actresses always come across a certain way, like every role is the same. Even Rachel McAdams is guilty of it (and it's the one big downside for her as Lois).

But with Evan, she allows the character to actually shine, like she's just the vessel (man that sounds cheesy). If you watch her in one film, and then the other, it's almost hard to see it's the same person. Especially because she changes her hair so often :p

If they are going really young (and I don't want them too) I'd perfer another actress from SuckerPunch, Emily Browning. I've liked since A Series of Unfortunate Events. Her or Abbie Cornish.

I dont' get why people complain about Bosworth yet cast actresses who are in their mid 20's. The actress should be in her late 20's at the very least.

Except Olivia Wilde. If Wilde was 24 I'd want her in this.

To Sawyer

From Doctor Jones

Honestly, though, I dont get why her age would be the complaint anyone has about Bosworth. Her being young was not the problem... her being generally bland as hell, however, was.

I complained about her age because she was playing a Lois Lane in her mid 30's atleast. Yes, her being bland was the biggest problem but she was too young for that Lois Lane. If she was cast as a just starting out Lois Lane I still wouldn't even bring up her age when complaining about her in the role. She was too young for her role and so was Routh for that matter.

That is a good point. Still the terribleness of the performance kind of overshadowed the terribleness of the fact that she was way too young.

If Singer had managed to get an actress the same age that could actually play the role, I wouldn't have had any problem with it. But then.... that would've actually required a good story to back it up.

I'm not a fan of ERW either, I find her to be kinda annoying. She's a very overrated actress IMHO and completely wrong for Lois. She's too much like a Kristen Stewart goth/troubled type of actress and I just don't see Lois that way. If we were going the slightly edgey, quirky actress route, I'd go with Amanda Seyfried.
I don't agree with your assessment that she's an overrated actress (although I don't know just how acclaimed her acting skills necessarily are), but I completely agree with you that she does have a goth/troubled persona on and off screen. In every role she's played she just seems so... fragile... which isn't right for Lois by a long shot.

Well we agree on the most important thing, on and offscreen that goth/troubled girl thing comes off of her and thats not any Lois Lane I know.

And lets be clear, I don't care how an actor acts when they are offscreen but she takes that damn personality with her and I don't like it one bit for this role.

Agreed. She's just naturally fragile and she can't get rid of it. But I do think she's a good actor, just not so good that she can vanish inside any role. Those are the rare ones.

Have you both seen 'Whatever Works' in which she played opposite Cavill? Arguably the most opposite role she's played of her natural personality.

What's the problem with the long lost daughter storyline? The story is based somewhat on Jake "The Snake" Roberts and that's a big part ot his story. I think they did a good job showing the father/daughter dynamic.

I've seen "Whatever Works" (well about half of it, didn't get to see Cavill in it) and I didn't recognize her as the girl from "Across The Universe" at all. Will have to revisit WW, especially considering that Cavill's in it. :o

I'm sorry but I have no desire to see Whatever Works. Not only am I not interested in the story but the DVD cover is just so awful that I can hardly stand to even hold the movie for more than a few seconds.

I also have no desire to see Wood as Lois Lane but who knows? Maybe the people who like her will get there wish. So far I like the cast so I'm waitng for the choice I disagree with. If that Costner thing happens thats going to be the first so I don't know if I could stand another bad casting choice of such an iconic character as Lois Lane.

That's all well and good. I'm just pointing out that she has a pretty diverse filmography for her age bracket, and the appropriate works are out there if you ever need convincing that she has versatility.

I hear ya but I don't think she's versatile enough for Lois Lane. There are simply way better choices than her IMHO.

Let's face facts here. There was only one great choice for Lois and, well..... now she's Maria Hill. :csad:

Cobie Smulders as Lois Lane??? Let me get back to you on that! ;)

I don't think there is anything fragile about her when she's playing Sophie Ann on True Blood.

And I don't think there is anything gothic/troubled about her in Whatever Works.

I think she pulls off goth/troubled well, and a few of her roles have required it of her, but I don't think it's anything that sticks with her in every role.

The goth/troubled thing isn't in every role, but she's fragile in every role. Even Whatever Works, she plays an innocent who has a child-like sensitivity and fragility. I haven't seen True Blood, so I can't comment, but I've seen every one of her movie roles and she's a variation of "fragile" in everything. Even if not, you really think she should be Lois?

26-30 seems about the right age for Lois. I wouldn't mind her being a year or two older than Cavill even.

Not exactly what I was saying, no. I was trying to say Olivia's beauty is an unusual one. Her look isn't commonplace. Gemma is far more "girl next door". Sometimes I have something in my head and when I type it out, it comes out a bit wrong lol! I know what I meant though :yay:

Now explain how that's supposed to lose her points for the Lois Lane role.

Olivia is my favorite, but I more I think of Anna Kendrick I can see her as well. Just about a year younger than Olivia.

Clear not as hot as Olivia though.

I love kendrick, she's cute and super hot, but I don't know if she could pull of lois' spunk.
