I agree. RAM boosted my performance noticeably. And you should be able to find a good deal on RAM out there. I think I only paid 20-something for 2 gigs after rebate.

Just make sure your system can handle it. The first set of Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo's sold in 2006 could hold a total of 4 gigs of RAM, but could only access 3 gigs. So you might as well not spend money on the fourth gig. Mine falls in this category. Also, once I upgraded to 4 gigs of RAM, XP refused to boot in BootCamp. I had to move it to Vista.

The systems sold around mid-2007 don't have this problem, so you can use the full 4 gigs.

I would've upgraded my RAM ages ago if I could have. My Macbook was bought in August of '06 and I'm pretty sure I was told that the highest it could go was 2 GB. Otherwise, I would have maxed it out right from the beginning.

Oh, so you got it just before the Core 2 Duo upgrades came out. Then, yeah, 2 gigs is your limit.

Worth checking on the capacity of the exact make and model you own to make sure. If there's room to bump it, that would be a good, cheap upgrade. As far as whether the new systems are worth their price in terms of performance, that's entirely up to the person with the checkbook. The new graphics subsystem will probably help performance a bit, but the processor bumps are negligible as far as I'm concerned. If you're just wanting a new MacBook to geek around with, then by all means go for it. If you're wanting a substantial performance increase out of the deal, I don't know that you'll feel like you got your money's worth.

Yeah, figures. Guess I'll just wait next year. I'll probably just buy a bigger hard drive cause I need the space. Is there a negligible difference between 5400 rpm and 7200?

Yeah, the speed on the 7200 rpm drive will make a decent difference in performance.

Quick question on burning data discs to be read by both Macs & PCs. If I burn an hd movie file using Toast Titanium under the burning options of "DVD-ROM (UDF)" or "Mac and PC", it reads fine on a Mac. But for some reason my PC can't read the disc. The drive acts as if nothing is inserted.

Conversely, I burn the same file on my PC with Nero, under "DVD-ROM (UDF)", and the disc works fine on both Mac and PC.

Any reason why this happens?

Yeah, and if you have a early 06 then you are stuck at 2 GB!!! ahahah. Good thing My job gets me a new one every year even though I prefer a Win machine.

Anyone know why the fan in my iMac would start up faster than usual? My iMac is still fairly new and I haven't had any problems with it so I'm wondering if this is an issue I should really be concerned about.

Might just be some dust inside reducing airflow. Or, maybe you've installed some stuff that taxing the computer a bit more than it used to?

Well a simple restart will bring the fan down to normal speed.

I have been mad busy professionally and just really haven't had the time I used to.

Sorrry :waa:

Didn't you get out of school last year? Welcome to the real world of having to work for a living, matey! At any rate, good to see you around.

Could also be a result of the system not getting proper ventilation and just getting a little hot.

Bud, I have logic boards that burned up in a month after getting a imac. Apple builds for looks and not true design and functionality.

Something like that, also traveled for a bit. Now, working for the organization that I hate the most....the government. Also, trying to get a business going, lots of work.

I've owned more than a dozen Macs that have run for years and years and years without a hitch. The only thing I've EVER had go wrong in one of my towers was a video card dying.

Ya gub'ment slave! :D

Decided to run the Apple Hardware Test due to the CPU fan spinning around 3500rpm and this is what came up 4SNS/1/40000000:Tp0P-131.000. Has anyone else encountered this problem before?

In Firefox, how do I get my Bookmarks to be added to the whole AutoComplete function? I'm sick of having to scroll all the way through my list, or having to type in the entire URL for stuff I already have saved.

Does Mac have a 'de-frag' type feature, where you can clean up, per say, unwanted files,etc...?

Typing them in manually as you visit them should do the trick, but give this thing a whirl (I've never used it, so no idea if it's worth a damn, but it's worth a try): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2300

Not sure I'm understanding what you're wanting to do, here. A defragger function simply moves all your data on your disk into a contiguous block that makes access to it easier on the drive's read function. To do that with a Mac, you'll need a third-party utility like Disk Warrior. Honestly, though, the way Mac OS X's file system works doesn't really cause the disk fragmentation issues that Windows does; it still gets fragmentation, but not to any degree near that of an MS OS. What's more important is opening up Disk Utility (in your >Applications>Utilities folder) and running "Repair Permissions" on your primary drive once in awhile and especially after you install new software. That should help keep your system running smoothly (Onyx is a nice piece of freeware that will do that as well as clean out all your system caches and help optimize your system further; check Versiontracker for the latest version of it). As far as cleaning up unwanted files, there are a few programs out there that will remove remnants left behind by programs you've installed but don't want anymore, but that's about the only kind of file cleanup program I'm aware of. More info on what you're trying to do would help.
