Apocalypse The Official Sophie Turner/Jean Grey Thread - Part 2

This franchise is still falling short of servicing it's X-woman, but that one bit shows how great these characters are compared to other properties out there and this franchise cannot fail Storm, Jubilee and Psylocke again. Jean is great, but we need to start making our own Black Widows, Scarlet Witches etc.

I still fail to see how people think SW is so greatly adaped... BW yes I definitely see but SW is just as underdeveloped as Storm in Apocalypse.

Not in terms of quality of adaptation but rather in terms of visibility and recognition. SW might have less recognition than Storm/Mystique but yeah, compared to other females in our franchise she definitely has visibility/recognition I think.

She had her origin founded in AOU (and the end credits scene from Winter Soldier, she volunteered to be experimented on to go up against the Avengers). We got her backstory of her family getting bombed by Stark's weapon and being trapped for days with a bomb not knowing if it'll go off, that was her motivation to go against the Avengers, because of the death toll they seem to rack up in collateral damage. In Civil War, she in turn caused a bomb to go off, so she's in the same place as the team and she's afraid of her powers. I actually think Wanda has more of a back story and development than BW.

In XA, Storm was just a thief and met Apocalypse by chance. We just know she idolizes Mystique and was made a Horseman, but what was her motivation in joining him? What was her reason for joining the X-Men? We don't know.

Exactly. SW actually had an arc (as did Quicksilver). Their stories had emotional weight, they had real characterization. AND LINES.

That's the main thing about SW that stands out beyond a lot of female X-Men characters. She's not just there, she actually talks & isn't a drone.

Xavier: "Jean. Just let it go. let it go. don't hold it back anymore....."

Jean: "The past is in the past!" ( Let's hair down ) "LET IT GO!!"

(Unleashes the full fiery phoenix on Apocalypse)

I find Storms role from X1 to X2 about her feelings on forgiveness of her oppressors just as impactful. SW did not have an arc in CW she was a plot device for the registration act. Which X1 did first but no one mentions because they're too busy belittling anything non-Avengers.

And one other thing...

Jean Grey in this one film>every other female superhero ever put on the big screen or small screen

Seriously.
Not sure if I entirely agree, but she is certainly WAY up there. Jean was amazing in this, along with Sophie who became the character. I didn't see a hint of Sansa Stark in her at all which was great.

Scarlet Witch's arc in CW from rookie who makes a mistake on the field, to recluse, to realizing that what she did was a mistake and that she'll never be able to control anyone's fear but her own was more than what many X-Men characters have been given.

But anyway...Jean was awesome in this. A big NO to going into the Dark Phoenix saga though.

I'm all for going smaller scale for the next one. [BLACKOUT]Morlocks/Mutant Massacre first. We don't need to see Jean be a baddie yet.[/BLACKOUT]

I still think Morlocks/Mutant Massacre should have been in the 80s especially after the revelation of mutants in the 70s. Apocalypse for future timeline.

It’s seemed like the X-Men movies have always done so much better than the other superhero movies with having the female characters on the same playing level as the guys. This movie was definitely no exception either.

Sophie was great. I actually wish she had the lead instead of Mystique...Jennifer Lawrence looked downright bored with her role a few times in this one.

Oh she was terrible. So many flat deliveries of lines. For example, when she said "You got your war-plane. Let's go to war," I swear my eyes just rolled backwards like marbles and never came back. :whatever:

Her talk with Magneto outside the magnetic field was phoned in as well. Not a lick of passion--something you'd expect from someone who is pleading with a man to stop annihilating the world. :whatever:

I didn't mind the war plane line but yea her line delivery to Erik here ^^^ was really bland.

I always thought Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner squandered Jean Grey in the OT, destroying the character's likability.

Sophie Turner brought it back in one film.

Sophie was on point. Loved her scenes. Loved Phoenix. Yeah it wasn't the cosmic entity we know and love from the comics, but it worked for this movie.

Yeah what the hell. I hate JLaw's delivery of emotionally charged lines. She has zero emotion. It just sounds forced. Like Hayden Christensen in Star Wars 1 and 2 forced.

You can REALLY tell, between this and DOFP, that Singer HATED what Brett Ratner did with Jean and the Phoenix in TLS.

Well he should have never left in the 1st place especially seeing how Superman Returns performed. IMO, he's a big part of the blame why we got that X3. People expected him to return and he abandoned it to direct another superhero film and even took James Marsden. Ugh.

bullcrap.since you and others think anyone can do X-men films then Brett Ratner should have easily has made good X_men film.

He left because he felt like Fox wasn't letting him do things properly, after he'd already given them two successful (both critically and financially) X-Men films. So, fair enough (especially since making a Superman film was apparently one of his dream projects as well).

And yeah, Brett still could have made a good movie that didn't throw out almost all of what was set up in the first two films when it came to the Phoenix. So X3's failure is on him and Fox.

@marvelrobbins Huh? even Bryan admitted that he regret not directing X3. Why do you think he came back directing X-Men after his time directing those films with WB. He should have never left.

What did Apocalypse mean when he said "all is revealed" to Jean?

Hindsight is 20/20.

Okay first off. I wasn't thrilled about Sophie being casted as Jean Grey. Famke Janssen was great and I miss her still...but! Just maybe we haven't seen the last of Jannsen as Jean Grey/Phoenix ;) I hope not. Anyway, I am a big fan of Jean Grey/Phoenix and while I have let go of my hate for X3...that butchered the Dark Phoenix storyline and even though Janssen herself has said it, too much was going on and and most of her scenes just didn't seem right in terms of being true to the source material like killing Cyclops and instead of Scott being the one who saves Jean, it's Logan...and feck I won't get into that crap. Anyways, My fave moment of the entire movie of Apocalypse was when Jean just lets loose...I clapped...when they showed the true Phoenix firebird! and OMG! I nergasmed all over the place. My body wasn't ready but omg....sorry. sorry. I didn't mean to gush but man! That is how you do a Phoenix fecking Fire Bird! Like hells yeah baby! Oh man... Next to that moment, I enjoyed Psylocke! and as always, Magneto.

So yeah...It'll be interesting to see what else Sophie will bring to the role...hopefully...she'll bring something her own just like Famke did...and who knows...maybe we'll see Phoenix/Dark Phoenix in some way...shape or form. Man...I wasn't sure if I was going to see this film but...I'm glad I did. :) Since The Force Awakens brought me back to Star Wars, well, I can say the same for X-Men. :) This movie brought me back to that world.
