Yes on the order. And yes, there's some prereading that is important, one arc only, but I don't think it was ever collected: It crossed over between Uncanny X-Men 369-370 and X-Men 88-90. I think it starts as if it's already running but it's starting from something that happens on the very last page of the previous issue that has nothing to do with the rest of that issue, so this is the best beginning. It also seems like it ends on a cliffhanger but the next issue does little with it and they just say they got out of it with nor problem on a side mention and the story continued into the last arc prior to the Shattering (which has nothing to do with the Shattering story itself and is skipable).
As for X-Men books worth reading right now... I'm not big on X-Factor but it's a decent read at least. Uncanny X-Force has been fantastic. X-23 has been interesting so far. I've personally enjoyed X-Men Legacy because I enjoy student books and there's a lot of the students in that one but most are bored of it from what I can tell.
