Do you have a link for where you read that the movie script will be based on the man of steel?

Personally, I would love to see a period superman piece, set in the 1930's with an Alex Ross type Superman. That would be pretty cool, however extremely unlikely.

They paid him quite little for SR, only one million. They could probably get away with something like that again. A big name like Hamm however, probably not as easy. I'm sure Reynold's salary for GL is obviously heavier.

BR seems to want it regardless of the money. He wants it because he loves Superman, and he's clearly a nerd for these comicbook roles.

So what if WB has an actor who has a wonderful look, nails the screen test, but doesn't care for the Superman character and wants 10x the amount of money Routh is asking for? Should this new actor be turned down?

Casting an actor for Superman is so difficult because he is one of the few superheroes without a mask. I hate to do this comparison and I hate to say it but it's like Jesus. No one in this generation actually knows what he looks like. We can guess, we can look at photo's, art of him, we have a general idea of what he looks like but no one really truly knows for sure. It's a little bit of the same for Superman. He is the single most mythical, iconic legendary comic book character there is. Every single person will have their vision/interpretation of Superman and everyone will see him differently. Not everyone can see eye to eye when it comes to Routh as Superman, nor can everyone see Walsh or Cavill or Hamm, Malambri, Cudmore, Hammer, etc. as Superman. We all have our own vision of Supes.

That's the number one hurdle Nolan and Co. have more than anything. That's one of the reasons why it should be an unknown, too. And saying Routh loves Superman and is a comic book geek and wants the role is like me saying I love Superman and want to play him too. It's squish-squash. In this business, it doesn't mean anything. I don't care if the actor is a fan of Supes or not. If he has a good look and can act and put the writers/directors vision onto film, I'm all for it. Look, I'm not opposed to the idea of Brandon coming back. It's a possibility however, unlikely. Unless there's an official word or some kind of rumor mill that WB is currently looking for actors to test for Supes, fine... Every Routh supporter can keep their hopes up. IMO, someone else will don the tights and I think the possibility of that happening is more likely to occur.

It was revealed long ago, the same week Nolan was announced.

I think it was on Latinoreview. They also confirmed it would NOT be an origin story. Brainiac and Lexcorp Luthor as the villains, and there would be a HUGE Kryptonian focus to the story.

It's not his height, its his frame, he's too narrow and slight for someone like superman, imo.

Yeah, it's all just really speculation and your opinion.

Like I said earlier, before you challenged me, we really don't know Routh's situation at all right now.

It could go either way.

My original point was it is just a different situation compared to rejected actors they looked at in 02/03.
 
Well there is the possibility that is a smokescreen, and since we haven't heard anything in 5 months confirming or denying, i am less apt to believe that.

If it isn't a reboot, then why not bring back Routh? This whole thing seems odd.
 
There would have to be basis in "Man of Steel" if Lexcorp Lex etc is involved.

But yes, Byrne's Superman also includes his less famous run on the "Superman" solo comics and his work on Action Comics leading into 1988 or so. I have all those issues.

The most definitive aspects of Bryne's Superman reinvention are set up in "Man of Steel," that was the point.


The film isn't an origin story however, so this basis probably refers to the characterization and the postcrisis reinvention of these characters.
 
Both Latino Review and Moviehole reported that Routh will not back, yet people keep ignoring that part of the info, but believing the other stuff.

There is no definitive reports on the casting thus far, aside from the TV star=Jon Hamm being 'looked at' stuff.

The Zach Levi stuff turned out to be 100% bogus.
 
I do not believe those story elements as a scoop. It is what everyone would guess on their own. In the end it is the obvious way to go and some of those things (Brainiac) may end up in the film. It may not have a thing to do with latinoreview's ahem report.

Well, take this for example. Compare Tim Burton's Batman and Nolan's Batman. Can you picture Keaton in BB or TDK, Nicholson as Joker in TDK? I can't. They are two completely different universes. As far as I'm concerned, Bryan Singer had his chance, and so did Brandon Routh. When everyone thought Singer was going to do a planned sequel, that idea floated around a bit until it got kicked to the curb. Now Routh's contract is up (and because we haven't gotten an "official" word yet) a lot of people are assuming Routh still has a chance EVEN THOUGH someone else (Nolan) has been asked to come on board as a caretaker. Seriously though, in this entire scenario and the way things have been going, how does Routh have any kind of realistic chance of reprising the role?

If the new film is not a sequel, then what is it? A reboot? A restart? What's the difference? If there are new writers/directors and a new creative team, what would be the point of putting all their $$$ into a project if there is nothing NEW about it at all? There is no purpose in that. So... what, we'll see new a Superman movie with Routh as Supes again but fighting super-villains? Why even ask Nolan to come on board then??? Might as well bring back Singer, Dougherty, and Harris. I just think the Routh ship has sailed and so has the Returns franchise. With all due respect Mot -- I'm not "challenging" you... I'm trying to knock some sense into you, lol.

Could someone explain this to me?

I couldve sworn Nolan has said that it's not a reboot or sequel, but it's in a whole new continuity. If I'm not making things up how is that not a reboot? To me by saying it's in a new continuity you're basically saying its a reboot. Thats what a reboot is, it's a set up of a whole new continuity on a previous series. The whole thing is weird

Niether LR or Moviehole brought up the Levi info and reading over what LR reported didn't sound like a guess to me. If WB are now looking to other actors, it's logical to assume that Routh isn't coming back. (sorry for breaking the rules Show. I'll edit my post if it need be).

It's kind of like what I said in a previous post in this thread. Nolan reintroduced the Batman universe and it's characters. He'll probably do the same again with Superman but with his own vision.
 
they can say it's not a reboot and call it whatever they want, but they're basically doing what they did with Batman Begins......rebooting it. it might not be an origin movie like Batman, but it's an all new take on Superman that uses none of the style or personal directorial aspects from the previous films (Singer used Donner's movies as a backdrop). so...while they might not be CALLING it a reboot, that's essentially what this movie is...




....that being said, even though there's no official word on the casting, i honestly can't see them rehiring Routh. it would be taking a step BACKWARDS when they want to be taking FORWARD strides.

Bottom line is, this situation is unique and we don't know what's going on with Routh yet.

Could go either way.

It's foolish to jump the gun this early, especially when the studio itself is still figuring things out.
 
I think people are afraid to use the word reboot because too many people automatically assume a reboot means a new origin.

I broke the rules too I think. I'll probably have to edit all mine as well but I didn't start the Routh convo :O the Levi info had bogus written all over it. LR is inconsistent with their reports.

He meant it's a standalone Superman film set in an established universe.

It won't be like "Batman Begins" which is a textbook reboot telling a new origins.


He expects the audience to be familiar with Superman, Lex, Lois, Jimmy, Perry and The Kents.


It's like "Batman: Under the Red Hood." It's a Batman story that assumes we already know Batman and kicks off.
 
But their pressing the restart button on the series. Throwing out the old continuity, starting a new one whether that be for 1 film or 10. So it's a reboot
 
btw Nolan never said himself that this movie wasn't a reboot, sequel, or whatever officially. That comes from the report Clint wrote.
