ALL MHO.
WB will need all the buzz they can get for this film. It would be a mistake to keep things quiet, especially after SR's lackluster outing.
Joe Q. Public wont know if this film is a reboot or sequel if WB does not make him well aware of it ahead of time, and If Joe Q. didnt like SR, and thinks this is a sequel to it, then well.....

It doesnt matter what we think or know about the reboot. The $$$ we will spend on seeing it will be tiny in comparison to what the public will (or could) bring in. They will be the ones needing convincing the most, not us.
It will need some TDK type marketing, for sure.

Oh don't get me wrong. I do think that a superman movie needs to have ahuge marketing campaign. But start with making superman big again. If they manage that , then start talking sequels. They got it right with Batman. Now it's supes turn

Nolan will probably get the same people that did the marketing for TDK. That was crazy good.

Now as to the ongoing jon hamm stuff. I wouldnt mind him one bit. He is a good actor, has that mature manly look we would all love to see on superman. I am sure he could deliever a great clark kent/superman. But his age is the only thing i still think is working against him. Now if the plan is only for a one shot and done film for now due to the whole copyright battle with the siegels and what ever does happen when shuster's heirs get into the picture. I could see this working out for wb.

Though if they are looking for a series of films 2 or 3 films if this reboot is a sucess i dont see hamm being the best pick. Since by the time the series would be over he would be hitting/close to 50. And we have no clue between now and then how much he could age.

If there's one thing I like about Chris Nolan more than anything else, it's that he's the type of creative that doesn't make movies for the sake of making movies. He, Jonah, and Goyer make a film because they have a great story. It's like after Begin, he insisted that he would not even consider a sequel unless they got the story right. That's how he operates. If Chris doesn't think there's anything worth telling, he doesn't do it. Begins wasn't set up for a sequel initially. It could have stood alone with Batman flying away after speaking with Gordon. Sure, it's great that Nolan made a second film, but we're only getting the third because as he charted the course for #2, the story elements for a final #3 were moving about.

Same goes for Superman. I don't doubt how many great writers have said it's genuinely hard to write Superman stories. Sure, the animated movies and JLA/JLU have done some great things, but there's a lot in animation that you can get away with that doesn't translate to live action.

Chris, David, and Jonah have ONE great Superman story, and that's what they want to tell. It might have some flashbacks, it might not. Ultimately, whether it's due to the IP fight, Nolan has one idea, one story and this is going to be Superman ala Prestige and Inception -- one awesome story told by arguably one of the greatest directors and creative team around today.

And I think we all really need to be amendable to that. Sure, the WB and Legendary probably want sequels. Sure, they probably want a 20 something cast to play the Man of Steel so they can sell action figures, videogames, and more comic books.

The Nolans could care less about all that. They got a brilliant take, and that's what they're going to do.

And legally, as I suggested, this could be one of the last Superman films we see for a long time. Possibly the last one in some of our lifetimes (come on, it took almost 20 years to get Returns).

Man of Steel could go down as the last hurrah for the WB's Superman. And that's fine with me. I'm just glad right now that we're even getting this film because the Superman license is ripe for a legal quagmire starting in 2013.

The Siegel Estate can effectively *kill* Superman by squatting on the license and taking the WB to court to enjoin anything Superman related until the fight is finished. The WB may not want to pay the arguably high amount the Estate is going ask for. IOW, expect a dragged out legal fight that could ice Superman for a while.

If not for Nolan leading this, there’s probably no way the WB would even consider green-lighting this project. It’s essentially a $200 million investment that will only have two chances to bring in major revenue (theatrical release and then DVD/blu-ray release).

So to get back to casting, Jon Hamm easily looks capable to play the part right now, as in next year for 2012. That’s all the Nolans are thinking about right now, and I sincerely doubt anyone in the WB is going to tell Chris who he should cast. If he’s going older, and all indication are that he is, Levi is probably on the WB wishlist. Hamm, Fox and others are likely on Nolan’s.

We can all easily guess which list will win at the end.

Exactly.

I think the funniest ones are when people bring up how his nose would look obvious as Clark, forgetting two things.

1. Reeve also had a very distinct looking nose, not the same as Joe's, but Reeve's looked different from the normal every day shnoz, enough to stand out. It was overly narrow, and from the side looked straight up and down. You would remember his face anywhere.

2. Glasses help change the look of the nose, especially when they are down on the bridge a bit. At least enough to help a disguise.

Regardless, to me the guys nose looks just fine. Its not like Adrien Brody's beak, and I remember people suggesting even him for Superman at one time!

If some folks are willing to overlook Hamms puny body then i'm willing to overlook a lil bump in Joe's nose !

If you are gonna use camera trick to make someone taller, it should be easier to "hide" a nose with the right lighting and angles

And I agree on the Market campaign

Regardless off your thoughts about SR, I really think the marketing campaign of that movie really sucked. it had really bad pics, and it had almost no presence until very close to the release date (at least around here it was almost inexistent)

i hope they do wicked good promotions like tdk/iron man films got.

you know what? Who really cares about his height when Robert Downey Jr is wearing 5 inch heels when he's in Tony Stark mode.

Yeah...because adding 5 inches to his heels would make his body look so much bigger and more imposing. Tony Stark's character doesn't need to look big. It isn't Stark's height that makes Iron Man what he is as a Superhero. The suit makes him the superhero. Superman needs to have a large, imposing physical stature. You don't get that by adding inches to the bottom. That just gives you height. You need a muscled and larger upper torso. I can't fathom why some people think it is just fine to tack some inches on someone's heels. Long legs and short torso isn't going to make Superman look proportioned and more imposing.

Give me an actor who already has the physical stature. There are enough of them out there. Not saying that it needs to be Manganiello, but he has the absolute perfect build for Superman. Why settle for a shorter, wimpy guy and add 4-5 inches to their heels when you can get the real deal with the imposing stature?

I would take one amazing Superman movie over 3 SR's without question.

I want a Superman that I can get behind 100% and be as hyped for as I was about TDK.

jon hamm for superman is perfect.

if he's cast, i might actually like a superman movie for once.

Definitely. With focus on making a single great movie without thinking of how much money could be made with a sequel, and Jon Hamm in the lead... it makes me happy just thinking about the possibility.

heh, my thoughts exactly. If not Hamm then someone as talented as he is and someone who looks like a man and is above the age of 30 years old. I'm sick of Superboys. I suspect they are going to cast younger than that because it is what studios love to do but I for one would enjoy seeing an actual Superman this time. I don't care what the dude's actual age is but he should look 30 and over this time. I also care about acting more than the perfect Superman body and height. Reeve was the only real actor to play the role IMHO and I want us to get back to that.

I don't understand the Levi rumor. He looks nothing like Superman.

Based on them looking at Hamm and Levi, I don't think they're concerned with the 'Superman look' at this point.

But it's still early on.

I didn't like the names we heard around 02/03 either, but they gradually got better.

again, i must stress that just because the Nolans are approaching this movie as if it's a one movie deal that doesn't mean that the studios aren't looking to replicate Batman's success and make sequels off of this. i can guarantee that they ARE. Christopher Nolan wanted to make sure, that first and foremost, Batman Begins was a movie that could stand on it's own without having to rely on a series of movies to back it up, but as we can see, it was such a big critical success (it was only mildly a box office success) that they went forward with a sequel. one of the reasons they were able to do this is because they got a young actor to portray Batman.

fast forward to this current circumstance where Superman's appearance is of EVEN MORE importance not only because he doesn't wear a mask, but also because he's supposed to age slower than humans. they may say that they're looking at Jon Hamm, but you can bet your tush that they're looking to cast someone under the age of 35 IF, in the event that this movie is successful, they can bring back whoever played Superman for 1 or possibly 2 more movies. this means they have to cast someone who's not going to look like he's 40 by the time the 3rd movie starts filming. unfortunately for Hamm, not only is he approaching 40, but he also looks no younger than 35. this would mean he will most likely look no younger than 38 in a possible sequel and no younger than 41 in a possible 3rd movie.

now i'm not saying that they will UNDOUBTEDLY cast someone who is younger than 35, but if Batman Begins is anything to go by (which seems like the case since it's practically the same team) then i wouldn't get my hopes up about Hamm (or any other actor older than 35) until they release some REAL news. the only thing they've said is that they're currently looking at many faces, and that Hamm is one of them.

WB's needs to stop playing stupid games that are a waste of time, money and effort and just cast Hugh Jackman or Jim Caviezel as SuperMAN and get on with making a KICK ASS Superman film!

Just for freakin once in this lifetime! Just once.....

Sheesh.....

unfortunately, i also think Jackman and Caviezel are outside of the ideal age range, but i certainly wouldn't complain (too much) if either of them are cast. however, if Caviezel is cast...he better hit the gym with the quickness.

It's a crap shoot right now trying to guess they age they wanna go with supes. Both sides arguements have merit.
Personally, i'm thinking older, but then, I also miss the lottery numbers everytime.

This just in. . .
