Regarding the red shorts, I think there could be a way of making that area of the costume red to keep the traditional but without putting red briefs over the suit. Make one unibody suit that is simply red in that crotch and ass area, along with the chest emblem.
Or better yet, have the butt area made of a slightly different material but part of the costume -- the same way that army pants have the extra backside sewn on for better reinforcement, rather than making it look like he's wearing speedos over his leotard. There must be a way to do that.
