The Official Tom Welling for Superman Campaign Thread!!!

I was really surprised when I first visited this forum that there is no thread about Tom Welling and his chances of getting the part of Superman.

So here it is. I know that not everyone agrees with this and there are not much news on the subject out there.

The latest are from back in December 2007 when the rumour mill was at high gear. It is said that the part was offered to TW but was unable to take it due to Al Gough. But he is gone now and the "Justice League" production seems to be moving away from Australia and possibly to Canada.

Does the WB still want him? Will they go after him again for the part? Does he want to be Superman beyond Smallville?


Fans of Welling who would like to see him suit up have started a petition for the WB asking to cast him as Superman. It is currently at 660 signature and it is growing daily. If you would like to support the effort, then please sign too. Here is the link or alternatively click on my sig:

I already signed. I definitly want to see him in the role and to me he is Superman.
He made the character relatable which is why not only so many people love him in the role but the secret of sucess for any super-hero movie (Spidey for example).
His take is original, he doesn't copy his performance from other Supermen namely Chris Reeve like other people (cough cough) but instead does only slight nods to him which is the best way to honour him.
Obviously he looks the part but more importantly, he knows it. He knows what make people fall in love with Superman and it's mythology. It's not the invincible God-like being that was portrayed in so many boring and atrocious comics from the late 80's and in the recent movie (that all failed to deliver in terms of sales/box-office as a consequence) but the fact that even though he could be that being (thanks to his many abilities) he is the most human of us all. That his weakness is his good heart and his ability to believe in the good of everyone of us. This is the take that made Smallville and more importantly Tom's portrayal so popular with fans and made them yearly profit of 200 plus million (in revenues, dvd and merchandise sales) and has recaptured to great sucess in more recent comics.
Exactly how much they spent in that horrible movie.
For those reasons and so many others he should be the one taking on the mantle.

I signed up. I would like to see Tom Welling as Superman in the JLA movie as well. I think he could go a long ways towards improving fan reaction to the cast. I was happy with the rumored cast with the exception of DJ Cotrona (sp?). I'm still not sold on him but I'm also not convinced that he was actually cast in the part. I really want to see Tom Welling and a more sci-fi/fantasy JLA and then an action packed sequel to SR in a more realistic universe.

Yea if i had to pick tom welling would be jla supes. He has the look, height, and build to pull him off nicely. And i would love to see him in the suit(more classic look) not any crap SR like suit. And with smallville we have seen him grow and become a better actor over time and has wide skills in comedy, drama, and everything needed to pull off the character. Also he is loads better then any of the rumored names we heard over the months and all that. He would be the smart choice to play the character. I dont see how cotrona proved to miller and/or wb he was superman material. Welling has been playing clark kent for 7 seasons going onto season 8 and he deserves to take the mantle of superman, well that is if he would want to play big blue that is. But he is my top choice, second would be trucco and third would be routh.

Considering the fact that it is a 7 acts movie, I doubt his paycheck would be anything that extravagant. However, with the $220million budget, I'm sure they can spend couple to get a fan favorite actor like Welling who will most likely bring back more than 50 times as much as they'll pay him.

Seriously, most people who claim to be Smallville fans will see JLM anyway, especially if the movie is good and gets good word of mouth. If it gets poor word of mouth, then Welling's participation will be of little help to the final numbers. His appearance in it, or lack thereof, will not make or break this movie for the vast majority of people who are destined to see it. It might be different if it were the solo franchise, but in this ensemble piece, his casting as Superman won't make much of a dent in the box office.

Anyway, I'm not dissing him or the petition. Though not a fan, I'd prefer Welling over Cotrona based on looks alone. I can't say much about the acting side for I've never seen Cotrona in anything.

I signed. Want him or Routh. Not some third Superman, as long as actors like Caviezel and so on will be to expencive.

If he has the part then I will connect much faster. In a movie with 7 heroes there will be limited time to get to know the characters, so that would be a positive thing when it comes to Welling. Even when the movie has nothing to do with Smallville.

Welling has always been a very popular choice among the fans. Obviously not everyone will agree on this choice as they probably have another favorite they`d rather have for the part of superman.
But as far as I`m concerned this is the guy for the job. He has the looks, build and talent to portray superman in either the JL movie or a solo movie. I hope to see this happen soon, more so in the superman solo movie than the JL one.

Ok. but that`s according to you. Ceretainly there ARE plenty of other people out there that feel differently about Welling and his portrayal of Clark Kent on the show, hence the desire to see him in a superman movie.
With all due respect, I`ve seen every episode of smallville and while one could have used the "acting" angle as an argument during the first and perhaps second season...there is no basis for that argument anymore. He has grown a lot as an actor and for me, he`s more than good enough to play Clark Kent/superman, and that seems to be the case for other people as well.
But as always, there are and will always be two sides to any debate.

If they can find somebody better... as in, a better comic-book/superhero looking face, and someone with a better build, and equal height, within the time they have to cast superman, then I`m ALL for it. But until then I think I`ll stick to the one I already see as superman. Because Cotrona is far away from superman IMO.

He must be doing something right this is the longest running Superman series ever. I have to admit I wasn't overly impressed with TW in the beginning but he has definitely grown into the role and his acting has vastly improved. I had high hopes for SR but I just don't think WB is going in that direction. If they are going with a reboot I think he has earned a shot. I also think Paul Telfer would be a good choice. There is room for everyone's opinion on here. We can all just agree to disagree. I wish nothing but the best for BR.

Never going to happen I'm afraid. And if he ever does play Superman on the big screen it will just evolve into a completely different argument. There will be countless threads titled 'Welling vs Routh...who do you prefer?' or 'Welling pwned Routh as Supes' , 'Routh pwned Welling as Supes', 'What if Bryan Singer directed Welling as Supes'

Etc, etc until we have all long since died and the rights to Superman have been auctioned off back to the Salkinds and they in turn sell it off to Todd McFarlane to be made into a comicbook called: Super-Spawn: Last Son of Hell

Thank you very much. The petition currently has 708 in less than a month and it is ever growing. I believe there are more people out there who would like to see Welling suit up and I'm hoping the final sum will be a much bigger number.

I agree out of all the names that have been rumoured the past few months, he is way better. And since the chances of seeing BR in a SUperman suit ever again are getting slimmer by the minute, then better the devil I know.... and have been watching for 7 years.

Umm well it is a slim chance Singer/BR will be doing another superman film that is a sequel off Sr. Currently singer is tangled up with his other film projects. No cast is officially resigned to return and no script right now and the possibility they might go in a whole new direction with a reboot film instead. But this all counts on what ends up happening with the siegels and if they dont get a SR sequel or reboot off the ground before 2013 when shuster's heir could take that shares away from wb/dc and we wont be seeing superman in dc or a wb film again likely for a long time counting if they all dont make a deal and keep it at dc/wb. There is so many factors going on with Solo superman properties right now.
