Days of Future Past The Official X-Men: First Class Box Office Discussion Thread! - Part 1

I doubt there is an actual reason why the movie doesn't do as well. It is combination of bad luck and bad timing. The movie makes money, but not as great as the others. I don't know if this will stop it from having a sequel and how many lessons we think fox will learn (rush production). The Wolverine is being pushed and will probably be released next June as well.

I think if The Wolverine and X4 (if ever) turn out successful then X:SC might be made.

They need the start of the Summer, or Memorial day next time. They couldn't have picked a worse release date for this film.

The weekend after Memorial day was definitely a bad release date.

In this crazy ass summer of non-stop 'blockbusters', would holding off until even November or December been a better choice for this one?

Even the later part of the year is packed with releases, like Footloose, The Three Musketeers, Paranormal Activity, Puss in Boots, Twilight Breaking Dawn, The Muppets, Mission Impossible, Sherlock Holmes, Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, War Horse.

Just like I said, $120 by weekends end.

$11,500,000 Weekend
$119,925,000 total

For some users, it needs to make more than its budget domestically.

For me, a bigger worldwide boxoffice than X1.

It's not a matter of what users want to get a sequel, it's a matter of what the studio wants to make a sequel.

And none of us have any idea what the studio wants. :)

I'd argue that the hate of the previous two instalments is only relevant among film fanatics online, and not among the mainstream. I know mainstream viewers who loved Wolverine, and some who regard it as their favourite of all the X-Men movies. The bitterness against X3 and Wolverine is a phenomenon among fanboys and general online film obsessives. It would have made these people hesitant, for sure.

Agreed 200%

While anyone I know who is a fanboy has their issues with the last 2 movies, everyone I know who's a "mainstream" viewer absolutely loves those movies. And I'm not just talking about friends and family members. I worked in a CD / DVD store when X-Men: The Last Stand hit theatres, and later, DVD, and when that movie was out all I heard was people coming into the store talking about how great they thought the movie was. It was our top selling DVD for quite awhile when it came out.

The bitterness over those 2 movies is definitely an internet fanboy concern, and not a mainstream viewer concern. I doubt whatever issues fanboys had with those movies was any kind of hinderance on the box office performance at all.

Could it end up with 140 million before it left cinemas ? I see 300 million worldwide is a big possibility. How much will Fox get from these money ?

Generally about 55%, but only the accounting department at Fox will know the true numbers.

If it does $300 million worldwide + $75 million on DVD/Blu-ray like Wolverine it should be fine.

The thing is, TDK was a sequel to the well received BB (after previous bat failures) which started building momentum. Another factor was Ledger's Joker and his tragic death which I think made people curious about his acting skills for that character and caused them to flock to thethres to see his last memorable performance.

With great care, I think the team that brought us XFC can truly do something great for the sequel.

The biggest factor to The Dark Knight that people seem to gloss over is that Batman is a huge American pop culture icon. Batman is arguably the most popular comic book character in America. And without a doubt, Batman is certainly bigger than X-Men. So with quality (something the original Batman films didn't give us, but Nolan's films did), Batman is inherently going to out perform a property like X-Men.

We don't. We won't know for a few months probably.

If I had to make a prediction, I would say that we'll get a sequel.

If we do, I can only hope that Matthew Vaughn got his James Bond lust out of his system, and that an attitude of respect towards the other films comes onto the set with him.

That's a great way to put it. While I did have issues with Origins, I rather enjoyed it and supported it myself and I'm as big of a fanboy as it gets. So, there are no absolutes.

Yup.

And I even liked X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Outside of what they did to Deadpool, I really don't understand what all the hate is. I watch that movie, and I for the life of me can't find what people are so up in arms about. There are some cheesy elements for sure, but not nearly enough to ruin the movie.

From my experiences with people and their reactions to the movie, I don't think that the last 2 movies contributed to a disappointing box office at all.

The disappointing box office is probably coming from a lack of promotion (I never heard a lot of talk for this movie) and probably from the fact that I think the X-Men series is starting to spread itself too thin. We're at 5 movies now, that's a LOT for a movie franchise. I think people are getting burnt out, and want something different.

I even remember my dad saying one time, when X-Men: The Last Stand came out, that "Magneto is the villain again??? When are they going to do something different?"

I think it's time to kill the franchise, and just let it exist as is. I think that's why the box office is disappointing. People want something different. Potential 6th, 7th, and 8th X-Men films, in addition to future Wolverine solo movies, aren't different. Bringing back characters from the dead in future movies is going to make audiences roll their eyes. It won't work in a movie. Ignoring installments already made won't make things any better. When you call your movie "The Last Stand", and then churn out movies after that anyways, it's overkill. As good as it was, X-Men: First Class didn't really add anything to the story. We already knew that Magneto and Xavier were friends, and had a falling out. This movie didn't fill in any holes. Unlike the huge mystery that was Logan's past, there was no sense of NEEDING to know what happened between Xavier and Magneto. It was covered. The franchise is just going in circles now. Just like Logan said to Scott in X-Men: The Last Stand: "Maybe it's time for us to move on"

150 internationally?

great!

Hmmmm so it did only 20-21m this weekend overseas? That's almost a 50% drop compared to last weekend's 42m

I was expecting it crack 160m this weekend overseas.....also domestically that 11.5m estimate is a little worrisome because so far the weekend numbers of X-men have been overestimated.

We haven't gotten overseas numbers yet.

yes.

Im in Spain, and here it is 8:15 pm yet, so the final numbers cant be reported yet.

I wanted 160 too, but was expecting around 20 for the third weekend.

If the movie ends around 180-190 internationally, Ill be happy.

If it gets the 200M mark, Id be happier yet!

Well put. X-Men is my favirote comic of all time but even I can't help but to wonder how far down the hole these films will go before audience's are completely burned out.
Though it will never happen, I wish they would wait 10-12 years before they made another movie, call it Ultimate X-Men and right the wrongs of the past films.

I think if they Reboot X-men with the Ultimate X-men Story Line it would do really Great.

I think they should've held off and released it a little bit later in the summer, as most summer movies are kicking off in April. Now or a couple weeks after Harry Potter could given them more space in a crowded field.

If X-men makes 180 internationally and 140 domestically (i don't think it can get to 150 anymore) i think people would label it a success because if a movie makes a profit as much as how much it costs i think people would call it a box office hit
