Good movie, Good Marketing, Good Reviews- I don't know what more they could've done to get a bigger opening.

Mind wiped X-men waking up in Disgusting hotel looking for giraffe ! That would make 300 millions at the box office !

Hopefully, it will do well. Unfortunately, there is a lot of competition this summer. My question is, if First Class doesn't meet expectations, what the heck is Fox going to do next?

The Wolverine, and then Bryan Singer would direct X4 which is currently in 'active development'.

Narnia 3 underperformed in USA but Worldwide it grossed 400 million. Same could happen to X-men.

We'll see. It may not be a proven franchise, but Green Lantern is another big budget, summer tentpole superhero movie.

True, but I'd say it maxes out at $50 million opening, and that's nothing like what X2 faced in it's third weekend with The Matrix Reloaded. And Thor went up against PotC4 on weekend three and then the Hangover II on weekend four!

EDIT: sorry fixed some errors.

This opening isn't surprisingly in the slightest. Like I said in another thread.

Pirates 4 and X-Men: First Class will under-perform.

I've literally heard people groan when the On Stranger Tides trailer plays. That franchise has had its time in the sun but like Shrek refuses to walk away until the general public vehemently says "No more!" Take a look at what happened to Shrek Forever After last May and that's what you're looking at for Pirates. What would normally be deemed a solid gross, will be viewed as a disappointment considering the heights that franchise once hit.

As for First Class, it's very simple. No Hugh Jackman/Wolverine, the retro-60s angle and the last two films were very unpopular (i.e. opened big, but plummeted because of poor word-of-mouth). Without question, it'll be the lowest grossing X-Men film.

I kept reading some of these predictions and thinking, "Where are you getting $70+ million from?" Actually we know the answer. They're going 100% off the name-brand and its strength in the past. What they never take into account (to their fault) is how the earlier installments were received by the masses and they focus their attention on the nerd/geek/fanboy community instead of regular folks who will always be the make-or-break with these tentpoles being blockbusters like the Star Trek reboot.

Will it even make $100 M ?

Yes. But matching the first X-Men (both in overall gross and adjusting for inflation) looks like a long-shot.

It would have been really interesting to see how PotC4 would have performed if it was a good movie. It's totally the XO:Wolverine of the franchise!

XM:FC was always going to be an uphill battle. As a fan, I myself didn't care that they did a pre-boot and chose not to pick Cyke, Jean and Storm, but add that and no Wolverine (about time!) it was going to be a tough sell from the get-go for the general audience.

at least my theater was totally packed.

That's what I don't get. The theatre I was in was packed. There were 6 theatres showing it. All of the late shows (10-12) were sold out. I was in a 300 seat theatre and while not completely full, the empty seats were few and far between.

Maybe it's just doing good business in certain areas.

My experience was the same--Packed theater, and all the later showings sold out (8-midnight) I actually had a conversation with a theater worker, who said they hadn't expected Xmen to bring in big crowds, but then started seeing the positive reviews and re-worked the staffing--turned out to be a good move.

I am, however, in the homeland of the geek, so it's not exactly the same audience as you find elsewhere.

In any case, what's done is done. It's got good word of mouth, so we'll just see where the chips fall.

there were maybe 30-40 people in my 10:30 pm showing. Very disappointed :(
I would have loved to have seen this in a packed theater, maybe my opinion on the film would have been swayed by the reactions from the scenes, cameos, etc.

i think it depends on location and theater.

i'm guessing there were a lot of sparsely attended showings, and some very densely populated ones.

Hangover 2 is getting all the big theather rooms and showings around here, which is kinda sad because so many people are dispappointed by it, but yeah everyones laughing at the jokes/tributes/cameos from the previous X-Men movies so the franchise is still strong.

A bit of a low start, but this is what happens when you open the weekend after memorial day weekend. It's usually not a good slot, hopefully WOM will catch on and it can hit 150+ million domestically. I'm thinking a total north of $300 million worldwide plus decent video sales could secure a sequel.

300 millions ? That's worse than Narnia 3.

The first X-Men landed at around 300 million. I'm thinking 300 million worldwide is the absolute floor for this one, but should be enough to secure a sequel with a $135 million budget. Hopefully it makes more.

Whatever happens, you know Fox will greenlight a sequel. They need this franchise.

I'd rather see a sequel to this than an X4 though.

Agreed. But I think a sequel will happen. I'm not too worried.

Wait, everyone is hanging their heads because of a Twitter source says Friday will come in in the low 20's? What are the real numbers for Friday? Didn't Thor do almost the same thing? If Saturday matches Friday, that's pretty much $50 million right there.

All I know is that I'm not letting a great movie like this go down without a fight. I'm going to pay to see it again today, probably a few times.

Given that FOX will do anything to keep from losing the rights, there was never any question that we'd get another X-movie. The question was only if it'd be a sequel to this movie. I think given the budget, a $320M WW gross will ensure that.

Sorry guys this movie is a huge boxoffice disappointment for fox. Also, don't expect good wom to help its legs. The cinemascore is only B+ which is nothing special.

It's a massively frontloaded franchise so don't expect more than 130-135 million domestically. The budget is 135 million after tax credits. I just don't see fox continuing with this particular cast and crew.

They are likely going to focus on Wolverine movies and go back to their old ways of making cheap and profitable comic book flicks with hack directors.

You're too paranoid. They'd be dumb NOT to resign Singer, Vaughn, Goldman for a sequel to this after the great reviews and fan reception. A $60 million opening weekend is not terrible by any means. Hello? That's what Thor picked up even with 3D and IMAX which First Class does not have.

A Wolverine would surely under perform worse than this after the awful first movie. I'm sure they'll be a sequel to this, without question.

It aint doing 60m this weekend.

It did 20.5m on Friday including 3.35 midnights. Saturday will go down because superhero movies never increase on Saturday. Oh and x-men is a frontloaded franchise.

Infact, I am not even sure it will crack 50m this weekend....

20th Century Fox's "X-Men: First Class" made top marks Friday, earning $21 million from 3,641 locations.

The comic-based Cold War actioner took $3.375 in its Thursday midnight bow, outpacing Marvel kin "Thor's" $3.25 million take. Though "First Class's" opening night is 17.6% behind "Thor's," pic is expected to make close to $60 million this weekend, well more than Fox's modest expectations.

"First Class" is this frame's sole wide release, bowing domestically and in 55 int'l markets.

In second, soph slugger "The Hangover Part II" took $10.5 million from 3,615 locations. Though the Warner Bros. laffer is down 67% from its opening night, it has cumed an impressive $164.9 million domestic in nine days.

Big drop for The Hangover 2. Hopefully that means the majority of people have seen it by now, so First Class can have the next week or so to itself.

People actully Like First Class. Many don't think as kindly to Hangover part II.First Class
Is on track to beat X-Men's opening weekend it it does 60 Million.
