I think it might do well next weekend just from the fact that only Super 8 is offering up any competition, which I'm thinking will be small. There's going to be breathing room for both movies so if people are still interested in XM:FC next weekend, it'll still be a viable choice versus a weekend when a movie that everyone MUST SEE comes out.

To get a sequel First Class needs to end up In X-Men Domestic gross and not the Incredible Hulk Domestic gross. If Super 8 or as I like to call It CLoverfield 2 takes top spot we can pretty much kiss a First Class sequel goodbye and Fox will then start move to bring X4 off the ground after The Wolverine.

Sucks, I know how you feel, I would have preferred to see Gambit as part of the actual X-Men team, rather than just Wolverine's sidekick in a period piece.

But it is what it is. I actually thought Emma was a great character in this.

It's true that Emma won't be able to make it into an X4 movie if they make one, but I'm hoping they change the time-line so that the XM:FC sequel can have Cyke, Jean, and Storm be recruited about 10 yrs after this movie. I actually wish

Emma had not joined Magneto so that she could join Xavier in the future as maybe assistant headmistress at the school.

She would be a great competitor for Xavier's teaching style. Her minimal aging could be explained by, in her own words, having "the best body money can buy".

And yeah, Gambit got screwed up already. Dunno if that one can be saved without retconning.

First Class is kinda a gamble. It doesn't really matter to FOX if its a good movie. FOX makes these movies to make money. If X-Men: First Class doesn't get at least $120 million at the end of its US run. A sequel is very unlikely.

It really does depend on the foreign gross, which is becoming a much bigger factor these days. Take PotC4 for example. It is looking like it's not going to make it's production budget back with its domestic cume, but internationally it is gangbusters as usual. I know X-Men movies usually do only OK business overseas (and I don't know how much of it FOX actually gets), but this time it's showing growth.

I'm perfectly aware of what happened, thank you very much. If Ratner was a competent director, it would have shown in the movie and it did not. He damaged the reputation of the movie and there is no denying it.

And I was generous in my original statement. I only said he was partly to blame, so your accusation that I'm on the "It's all Ratner's fault" bandwagon is already negated. Maybe you should be the one paying more attention.

In your statement, you gave zero responsibility to Vaughn who played a hand in how X-Men 3 turned out. I pointed that out with facts. Plus the fact is this started when Vaughn was trash-talking Ratner in the press (to which nobody uttered a word) and the moment Ratner said something out loud to defend himself we suddenly see articles saying Ratner has no class and is a hack. Hell of a double-standard.

Maybe you should be the one paying more attention.

I thought January Jones did alright but it was the writing aspect that wasn't good and didn't leave much room for her to work with. Same can be said for a few others who were good but everything in the film was better written and it worked well on-screen.

I don't think she can act in any time period.

I thought she was fine. She played the character as an ice-blooded *****, which was what was called for.

I am a little disappointed in the box office so far for this. It's way better than Thor, Pirates or Hangover 2.

I know several people at work and outside work who all say they "want to see" the film but haven't managed to get to the cinema yet. :csad:

If we're not careful we'll get Halle (or a recast Storm) and Hugh hogging the next film, a few cardboard cut-outs of familiar mutants in the background and a long noisy series of action scenes, shaky cameras and explosions.

As it is, I see Wolverine being brought into the next First Class film and Taylor Lautner (rumoured for First Class) coming into the franchise as Sunspot. Wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a young Storm and young Jean too.

If Fox starts enforcing anything like that bet your bottom dollar that Vaughn is out.

He likes Fox when they give him his space and detest them when they start encroaching.

Too bad the film has potential to make 100's of millions of dollars. This movie is another watchmen. Great flick that people ignore !

The way it's going, they are going to need a BIG name in the sequel if they continue with First Class.

If Jackman's Wolverine isn't in it, then something as big as Johnny Depp as Mr Sinister or some big action star as Cable...

And they may have to consider IMAX and 3D next time. I don't see why they can't get Cameron to mastermind the 3D element, he has a good relationship with Fox.

That will be the sort of thing the execs will be debating once we get the final box office. A sequel won't be greenlit until the DVD and Blu-ray sales have been factored in.

Making a X-Men movie without Wolverine was a big risk, considering how the box office has turned out so far I highly doubt fox gambles again in a Wolvie-less X-Men movie. They might try to incorporate Logan in FC2 but If I had to guess they will just let this incarnation die.

With X-4 reportedly in development stages right now and filming on Wolverine 2 starting in the fall, it`s one and done for First Class.

You can look at movies like Watchmen, The Incredible Hulk, Hulk, Wanted, Fantastic Four 2, Fantastic Four, and Hellboy to get a gauge of where First class will end up box office wise domestically. Somewhere in that range for sure, Watchmen being on the low side of the scale.

I'm all for a sequel that would be filmed in 3D guided by Cameron and if they work with WETA again they're defintely game for such a task.

If thats the only requirement Fox does and decides to put more money in to make sure its done well then they might have a TDK type situation. I also agree about them probably hiring a very big name on actor on top of that.

I wouldn't mind something like the example you provided with Depp and Sinster but to shoehorn Wolverine into this somehow would most definitely not be the right move. IMO

Most importantly I want Vaughn back as well.

I think once the movie passes 200 mil worlwide, many media publications will start to make the case for a sequel and bring into consideration that this movie made all of its money without 3D and IMAX, if you throw all of that for a sequel, and take into consideration that the actors are already locked by contract, the estimations will make FOX greenlight the sequel faster than it has ever done before.

Personally, I think I'm about ready for this franchise to come to an end. Not due to lack of quality - I feel we've gotten 5 great movies out of the deal. But, each movie that gets introduced causes more and more continuity issues with the others, and it's not going to take too many more sequels for this franchise to cluster f--- itself into obscurity as it further meddles up the continuity by directors who "don't want to be beholden" to the previous movies, but do anyways.

Except for a couple villains, like Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister, and Sentinels, pretty much all of the major characters have been portrayed in one way or another. While there are still many big time stories to tell, X-Men: The Last Stand kind of prohibits the series from moving forward creatively, and if they do, it's going to be a situation of the franchise spreading itself too thin (either undoing major events that will make audiences roll their eyes, or proceeding forward without major, core players of the lore), and many of those stories are stories that audiences won't take seriously on the big screen anyways.

Unfortunately for me, I'm pretty much backed into a corner. As far as I know, in order to keep the X-Men rights, Fox needs to keep making movies. So they will keep making movies to hold onto the rights. And if they don't, then X-Men reverts back to Marvel, who will give it the unholy reboot treatment, and probably cluster f--- it into the Marvel Universe and having the X-Men fighting alongside Captain America... :whatever::whatever::whatever:

First Class gave some dignity back to the X-Men movie series. I'd love to just see the franchise end on a high note, and let it rest.

If this movie doesn't make it $200m worldwide, then we may have a problem...I think we're safe as it's only been out for a few days and it's at $120m, so I think it'll get there.

If it hits $230m, it'll be enough for a sequel, no question about it.

EXACTLY! One thing that truly makes me angry about X2 is that the team's leader was written out of the movie for 3/4's of it! I mean, if you blink, you'd forget he was in it! You can't do that to the X-Men's field leader! He needed more time than he got. It was poor writing to do that, especially when Scott's involvement with Jean being a reason she doesn't end up with Wolverine was a big focus of X2. You can't just write him out like that! Plus, in X1, Wolverine came up with the plan that beats Magneto. Not the team tactician.

Cyclops got hosed in all these movies, and he's a major example of where the Wolverine love hurt the films. I mean Cyclops was in the Wolverine solo movie more than he was in ANY other film! What sense does that make?

Although I had enjoyed the first two X-Men movies, as a Cyclops fan & an Uncanny X-Men reader since '88 I was NOT pleased to see Singer gave all the spotlights and all the credits to Wolverine, even though Scott is clearly the field leader. That's why I really enjoyed the X-Men Anime series that is airing in Japan right now; Wolverine still has a dominating personality, but Cyclops puts his foot down whenever he got out of hand. That was what was missing in all those X-Men movies, and it is another reason I though Marvel would've gotten it right if the rights were reverted back to them. I think think they will have this kind of fixtation on Wolverine if they were making the movie.

Back to BO, I think given that it has a lower OW than Thor, who also received generally good (although not spectacular) reviews, I think it'll make around 150 domestically, and possibly more depending on WOM. I just don't think Fox should make X4 and instead should focus on the sequels for FC, but they can easily use the BO figures to justify their decision to make X4 and discard FC if they want.

Being the field leader shouldn't give you a free ticket to more screentime.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS was #1 on Monday, earning $5.5 million. Domestic total now stands at $60 million.

Probably make something like 4.7 for today, tomorrow and Thursday.

It's really simple folks.

You want quality, you want more Singer/Vaughn, then you have to spread the good word and keep seeing this film.

This isn't about Marvel vs DC, or Marvel Studios vs Fox, forget all that nonsense. You all wanted Singer back on board, well now he is on board - he devised the story, chose the characters, served as producer.

If the film doesn't get the support, then they'll go back to the old formula...
