The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

7 out of 10. Needed more Faora!

Overall Enjoyable but flawed. Alot better then Superman Returns, thats for sure. Nice to finally see Superman beat the crap out of people.

Im seeing it again Sunday, my rating (7) I feel will go up. Now that im over the parts I didn't like (editing chopped, finding of the FOS), I could go in and watch it as it was intended to be taken. Also, we were all forced to sit in the second to first row with 3D glasses on, messed with my vision as well as those who I was with. Also, there were kids whining and screaming through-out the movie constantly! Guess thats what I get for going to a WalMart premier!

Just came back from the movie I thought it was a good film not great as Batman Begins TDK or TDKR

Let me start with the good
Henry Cavill as Superman is a great choice he looks the part and I can't wait for future films and see How his Clark Kent persona will be in the next movie. The Rest of the cast did a okay job. Crowe and Costner were really good. Adams was okay although at times i felt her voice was really soft. I know i might get criticized for this but I though Shannon did a okay job he wasn't as great as some people are saying. Also Diane Lane was underused and i felt like she had no role.

The Action in this film was Amazing. I mean we finally get to see Superman hit something and go through buildings creating the building to collapse and using heat vision. Though i felt some of the CGI was a little off in a few scenes but most of the time it looked good.

I thought the flashbacks were pretty emotional especially the ones with Pa Kent except the tornado scene that scene where Pa kent
dies was total BS and made me go WTF Clark should have saved him i don't care if the world would have found out and i don't think it would have mattered since the a bus full of kids already witnessed him using his powers

Now Let me get to the Bad
I hated the pacing. I felt that the transitions of flashbacks was poorly handled. Certain scenes jumped from one scene to the next and i didn't like it too much.

Also Even though I loved the action I thought there was just too much going on especially with the scene where Supes is fighting the tentacle looking thing I felt that scene had too much going on.

Also I felt the film felt too serious at times. It didn't have that Lighthearted Superman feeling which l like. At least with the Nolans Bat films we had Bruce and Alfred telling a few jokes in between for us to laugh at. But this film only had like one or two scenes to lighten the mood. Not that i don't mind a serious film but I think the next film should be a little lighter.

Overall This movie is a good movie Not Great like TDK or Avengers which I consider my favorite Superhero films This film is The Superman movie we were waiting for and Snyder and Nolan have delivered a good film
8/10

It's funny how Goyer was ridiculed for his comedy in Batman Begins... and then people ridicule him for not having lines like that in Man Of Steel.

Lol. There actually lot of jokes n the dirty one in MOS.

The way Goyer lightens the mood is flawed..you can lighten mood without cornball out of place jokes. The problem is Man of Steel makes no effort to lighten mood...its just dark, dark, dark, depressing....even with reveal of Superman...its still kind of depressing, which is not good.

I was in between 6 and 7.....ultimately voted 6 because I think in spite of great plot execution, the characterization of Superman was not built properly.....

I feel he (and the actors) did it better than Begins, instead of lines it was actions.

- Clark/Lois bag joke
- His first flight fail
- Bar fight/semi truck attack
- Stealing clothes from a truck
- "Welcome To The Planet, Clark"
- Bigger Knife gag.

>

- Tank jokes
- "Nice Ride"
- "I Gotta Get Me One Of Those"

Begins is still a better film, the flashbacks made the first 45 minutes there while they broke this film. No flow...

Plus, even though I'm a Batman fan first... you could feel Bruce's journey and struggle. This film was basically a highlight reel. No cool moments like Bruce and Alfred investigating the cave for the first time, the suit construction in the cave and supply buildup with Fox.

Another downfall was no friendship aspects, like Batman/Gordon - Bruce/Fox - Bruce/Alfred.

All we had was Clark/Lois, and maybe Clark/Martha Kent. Everyone else was pushed to the periphery.

Yes, Rachel gets slayed by Adam's Lois but that doesn't make up for what I stated above. Simple editing, beef up the Daily Planet crew, and a scene or two of the Kent's engaging with their new baby boy out of the rocket would have made this go from a 7 to a 10. But, the sequel might be able to fix most of these issues. Superman's origin is just such of a feat. Almost needs two films to perfect it...

On rotten tomatoes your 8/10 is considered 4/5 stars, so your score is still great.

Lol. There actually lot of jokes n the dirty one in MOS.

The funniest line of the night was unintentional at my showing.

Lois - "It's not working right. It's supposed to go all the way in".

Some guy in the audience yells "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!"

It took awhile for everyone in the theater to stop laughing.

DAMN someone should have tried that at my screening. :lmao:

False premise. Sure some people complained, mainly about Gordon, but to me the humor in the Dark Knight series is one of the things that makes it watchable.

Parts of this movie were unwatchable, because it was so serious.

??? So serious movie not watchable??? I bet award winning movies are for the dogs.

Just got back, and I thought it was freakin AWESOME. Cavill and Adams were great, I loved the way they shook up the origin story, and-- despite what the critics say-- I thought the movie was chock full of wonder and emotion.

I just don't understand what their problem with the movie was at all. Yeah, maybe the story's structure was a bit unconventional, but I had no problem following any of it and actually kind of liked how it kept you off balance a bit.

And while Avengers might have been more humorous and "fun", I found MOS to be far more emotionally engaging, and Clark's journey much easier to care about and get involved in. And the movie never felt oppressively dark or heavy to me either; I thought there were plenty of light and funny moments and plenty of quiet character scenes. And while the action was certainly big and epic, it never grew tiresome or mindnumbing like it so often does in a Michael Bay movie (in fact I was actually surprised the various battles ended as quickly as they did).

And I don't understand the complaints about Superman himself either. Not only is his first move is to surrender to Zod in order to save Earth, but when he takes the action he does at the end, he's not only incredibly resistant, but devastated as hell after the fact. And we also see plenty of his humility, compassion, and self-sacrificing nature in the movie as well.

The only criticism I have is perhaps spending a little TOO much time on Krypton early on, and the somewhat abrupt way Superman is revealed to the world only through Zod's arrival and him being called out. I think I would have preferred seeing Supes introduced more on his own terms, and before the big invasion started.

But still, those are minor gripes and in the end I'd still have to give this movie a 9/10.

As of right now my favorite movies by rank are:

1. Man of Steel
2. The Avengers
3. Kick Ass
4. The Dark Knight

Also, was it just me or was there a moment when Cavill was looking up at the energy beam pounding down on him, that he looked dead-on like Christopher Reeve?

Maybe it's just all in my head, but I swear I got chills.

This is why I stated in another post that there should have been more humor involved! Not campy humor as in SM-3, but simply something to wake the audience up! You have no idea how happy I was at the end when the general asked the captian "why you smiling captian", "I just think he's hot"!, the audience erupted in laughter!

There needed to be more moments like this, this scene literally broke the ice with the audience, I heard for the first time in literally an hour everyone in the theater laughing!

Also, no after credit scenes is gonna hurt this movie...Com'n Snyder, really??? Put something funny in the after credits so people walk out laughing, it really helps with how the audience feels walking away from this type of film! I know with the Avengers, the Audience started cracking up laughing when they were eating food at that restaurant! Yes, this is a serious superman, but things could have been done better to lighten the mood.

I really hope we get a sequel, but you would have thought that WB and crew would have learned from the success of the Marval movies. Obviously they have not, and we are stuck wondering whats next.

jesus christ is thsi how it is now just because its a superhero movie it HAS to have humour. Dont get me wrong people love abit of humour but you were/seem's the most happiest just because some chessy joke was said. As i said people seem to expect all these jokey moments because CBM essentials. Funnily enough my favourite comic book movies have dark undertones with hardly any humour , i like the sence of DREAD in comic book films when cheesy jokes are flung around it just unengages me. Thats actually one of the reasons why i hated IM3

Marvels r successful. N the people have got used to that formula.

I'd give it a 9.5...it's certainly not perfect, but it's damn near it! Aside from inserting more humor and polishing some of the effects, I'm not sure if they could've made the film any better.

Of course sf2 no doubt about that. Im problay in the minority anyway but still if people are going to see serious comicbook movies and there's no jokes the backlash is quite troublesome this whole it could of been funnier talk is like wtf did u come to see hangover3. This for me is why darker comics like Blade,Punisher, crow, dardevil etc will be harder to do in this day and age because the GA want cheesy humour for comic relief. Yea this movie could of had more linear humour moments but i dont see CBM for humour relief . I want to be engaged with emotional attachments from characters , the sence of sorrow ,conflict and dread from my heroes is what i thrive on.

Man of Steel = 9/10

1) Batman Begins
2) Man of Steel
3) The Avengers
4) The Dark Knight
5) Iron Man 1

Honorables: TDKR, Spiderman 2, Superman II

I don't think it's necessarily that... I think most people are looking for a 'fun, and upbeat' time... whether it's a CBM or FAST 6, or whatever type movie, the GA wants to be entertained.. not constantly bombarded with 'real life, gloom and doom, all serious and no play' scenarios... people go to the cinema mainly to 'escape reality' not get thrown back in with some extra heavy doses to boot..

Now that most of my friends have watched MOS, most of them aren't that impressed... most thought it was 'boring, terrible character development'.. but they still give it a pass because of the action... even the action gets old, because it's the same thing, repeated over and over again...

Take Ironman 3... most people enjoyed it not because it's smart.. but because it's funny as hell and it was just a lot of fun.. and there aren't all that much action anyways...

Don't get me wrong... not all movies have to be shallow fun... but there's also a 'too much of a heavy, gloom too'...
