Comics The SUPERIOR Spider-Man - Part 1

It is. This issue was great. I can already feel the anger that's going to come once this issue is out to the public.

There's one moment in the issue where
Peter and Doc Ock are fighting, and they both rip off their faces and have their Spider-Man masks on underneath and fight as Spider-Men.

That probably sounds really weird but it's awesome in the comic. And I'm glad Stegman drew this issue, I wouldn't want any other artist doing this.

See, I felt the shots of all his friends and shots of all his villians looked a bit rushed. I actually wished Ramos handled this.

I don't mind that Ock won. That's fine with me; him being Spider-Man is what made this book so damn fun to begin with. It's the fact that Slott made Peter such a selfish bastard that he would risk a little girls life just to stay hidden in his own body so that Ock could win in the end. THIS is destroying Spider-Man. Not killing Peter. Killing who Peter is. And I hate Slott for doing that. He's just lucky it's not gonna stop me from reading...

I'll probably expand more on this on my blog later (thus giving me a reason to update it finally) but yeah...
it's not so much that readers will get upset that Doc Ock kills Peter once again, because let's face it: quite a few people expected that Ghost Peter was going to lose and be jettisoned/erased or what have you by Doc Ock. Rather, it's the notion that Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel's flagship character and they guy we've been told for 50+ years is "the hero who could be you" was willing to run the risk of letting an innocent, brain-damaged, little-girl die just to save his own skin.

Granted, the suggestion is that Ghost Peter is only the manifestation of the real Peter's memories and is therefore not the real Peter, but the issue also makes the point via Doc Ock that "we are the sum of our experiences," meaning that Ghost Peter might as well have been the real Peter for all intents and purposes. And even if we're supposed to conclude that this is supposed to be another example of how readers can "relate to" Peter because he's not above succumbing to moral lapses out of fear and desperation, it still comes across as the most blatant form of character assassination of a beloved comic book superhero that I can recall ever seeing. Hell, this whole issue was practically saying:

"See? Doc Ock isn't just a better and far more deserving Spider-Man than Peter Parker--he's morally superior to him as well. Because Peter, at his very core, isn't just a selfish person--he's also a morally weak, hypocritical coward diluted by his own self-righteousness while Doc Ock is willing to do what ever is necessary to get the job done, but not at the cost of innocent children's lives. In fact, it's Peter's sense of guilt and desire to be loved which actually proves that his dedication to heroism and self-sacrifice was nothing but a lie. Unlike Peter, Doc Ock admits that he's motivated by personal self-interest, that he too wants fame and recognition for his deeds just as much as Peter does, only he's not willing to drop his moral principles at the drop of a hat when it's most convenient, especially when innocent children are in danger. Plus he doesn't care that people don't like him personally because as long as the results are done for the greater good, who cares what other people think about him. That's an admirable quality in a hero, is it not? It's Peter Parker, the so-called superhero who is the real villain here, and has been a villain all along. Therefore, Doc Ock is worthy of redemption and has earned more than enough right to prove himself as a hero."

To which the proper response to this argument should be: "BULL****!" Especially when the last page is pretty much a variation of:

Guys,

Yes that revaluation about Pete risking the life of the little girl does seem out of character, but it was probably a natural instinct, a self preservation thing. I'm sure there will be an answer. Perhaps it is as you said not the real Pete and the real Pete "soul molecule" is still out there somewhere. And no way is Ock "Morally superior." You just spit out Ock's twisted rationalizations. Pete does fight the way he does to "be loved." He does it because it's the right thing! Ock is the one looking for acculations. He has been in the first issue he appeared way back in ASM #3. He's still doing it to this very issue.

Anyway, we knew what the outcome was going to be, but overall I enjoyed it and look forward to what Slott has up his sleeve!

I'm not reading the book, but judging by what I've seen in skims and people's comments... this comes across as something that should have been maybe a 6-8 issue arc, not a long, ongoing story. I mean, it's essentially Ock becomes Spider-Man, experiences Spider-Man's life in attempts to prove he's superior, Spider-Man returns and proves to Ock that HE'S the superior Spider-Man (which is precisely what I said it would be before this even started).

Does it feel as dragged out as it sounds?

But that didn't happen yet at all. He TRIED to do that, twice (sort of), but Ock bested him both times. Ock has proven he's superior to Peter (at least in his mind) and not only killed and become Peter Parker/Spider-man, but he's erased the original Peter Parker from existence (for now).

And to answer your question, no it doesn't feel all that dragged out. Yet.

Nope.

It's been quite fun and this entire saga reads like old school comics.

I love it. :word:

:yay:

Yeah, Hobbit, this has been a fun ride. I know you like character and this is precisely what this has been about, Ock's character vs. Pete's character (with the battlefield Pete's mind).

My thoughts: [BLACKOUT]This was a real missed opportunity to have an awesome team-up with dead heroes like Ben Reilly and Jean DeWolff without the stupid resurrections. It was an okay issue, but felt rushed. Good ideas, terrible pacing. This mental battle should have taken over 2 or 3 issues, instead of one. Usually I'm a critic of decompression, but here it was needed. Too quick and easy.[/BLACKOUT]

I agree with JJJ's ulcer. I liked the idea, and the issue wasn't bad, but it was really rushed. The army fight should have been longer to have an impact, and it was weird that Peter never thought of using his heroes pal. Even those who are not his friends should be memories, so he could use them.

I do think the whole little girl stuff was interesting. I don't think Peter would have really risked the girl's life in the end, but that scene made me really uncomfortable.

it'll be interesting to read Spock's adventures without ghost Peter speaking non stop.

Yeah, but the story isn't over... though I hope it isn't as predictable as that.

And I'm glad it doesn't feel as dragged out as it sounds

Sales on AvSM have actually gone up since issue #15.1...

I'll go out on a limb here- and I'm not sure if someone has already said it.....

I think Peter is still Peter. The mind meld thing gave him Ock's memories and makes him think he is Ock. But at the end of the day he is still Peter. Pete has been the superior Spider-man all along. The only spider-man. And when all is said and done and he regains his mind, sanity, whatever he is going to have to deal with "Spock's" success, failures, etc.

This issue made my day. It established what I've been saying from the start.
Spidey has one of the greatest rogues gallery of any super hero. I'm really glad that they have explored the depth of his enemies in this arc. This is why I compare Superior Spider-Man to Kraven's Last Hunt. Both enemies were so envious of Spider-Man that ultimately, the only way they could beat their enemy was to become their enemy. Both guys are CRAZY-JEALOUS of Spider-Man and all that Spider-Man tries to stand for. Hopefully NO ONE now thinks that somehow SpOck has reformed.
Also for all of the computer nerds, we all know that delete doesn't mean it's totally gone.:cwink:

Aloha,
I think I get a No Prize.:word:

consider yourself duly "No Prized"...

expect the envelope in the mail... LOL...

I was given a No-Prize from a Cup'O Joe panels around 2006 from JQ himself...

I have the page printed on my cork board in my office.

:yay:

That's awesome. For as much as he ticked me off with OMD, I've always liked Joe.

I have one, too. I wrote Stan Lee in the 90' when he brought back the Soapbox. I have a printed letter in the Webspinners #2 (and every Marvel comics that week).

ah... seeing how your post was after the No-Prize posts, I thought maybe you were pissed that YOU never got a No-Prize...
