BvS The Superman Suit Thread - Part 3

SR's costume is terrible, but it is a study in how poor the result can be if you get a number of things just slightly wrong. The shorts, for instance, are not a million miles from what they should be, but the cut is somehow inherently feminine. The neck is inexplicably high. The boots look ill-fitting, and are too low. It all adds up.

Cage's costume is a horror in both concept and execution.

This.

Just do minor modifications and SR would have been 100 times better, like increasing the "S" shield size, lowering the cape attachment from neck to shoulders, better trunk and belt design, higher boots and more bright shade of Red in the costume. (and designing an better muscle suit, Mingenbach's designs are ****)

In case of Nic Cage's suit, it would have looked awful even after some "tweaks".

Sounds like you are asking for a re - Boot ?
...so essentially, Begins Agains...:sly:

After getting the textured suit from MOS/DOJ looking at the SR suit makes it look so plain and boring, just a blue leotard with an 'S' slapped on it.

No, but a solo Superman movie (featuring Cavill ) would be nice.

But, I still like SR, despite it's flaws, but no reboot again.

Leave that sort of thing to Spider-Man. :oldrazz:

I meant Re --- Boot, SRs boots sucked. :woot:

SR had some nice moments. I liked it for its time too.

I am also looking forward to a full Superman SOLO sequel.

Superman, visits a Galaxy far far away...:sly:

If someone asked me to name one thing in SR's suit that sucked the most... Boots would be it. :oldrazz:

I've always thought the SR suit kinda looks like one you'd pick up for your kid at a toy store.

The SR suit is what happens when a designer tries to modernize while staying too rigidly within the confines of a classic look, whereas the Mos/BvS suit is a modernization with enough essential elements intact to recall the classic image.

I'd say the brown shower curtain cape. The boots are okay-ish in my book, I liked the folds and extra detail.

Ignoring the actual actors in the suits for a moment, based purely on the suits themselves which do you think was better?

Funny enough I feel like the MoS suit seems sort of like a mesh of both.

It still..

..to this day..

..blows my mind that professional Hollywood designers on a big budget summer blockbuster came up with a Superman suit that looks like they had their Grandmother's sew their left-over children's snot rags in the attic by looking off of a picture drawn on the back of a used napkin by the families not-so-talented neice in the family.

That's what the Superman Returns suit means to me. It's awful and quite frankly, still hard to look at til this day.

The Nic Cage version is just the Batman Returns suit they painted over and free-handed an \S/ shield ontop of it and then proceeded to finialzed the finished product, only to realize and remember that Superman had red underwear, so they rushed and spray painted a red jock-strap in its place. They didn't even take the time to make the trunks look like underwear.

F&^# ..Superman deserved so much better. Thank ZOD for Mr.Wilkinson.

Conceptually Superman's suit has always been tough to put on screen. On one hand, you can't really use the Nic Cage method for sculpted armor, because c'mon, he's Superman, he doesn't need armor, or have sculpted muscles. He's got his own. On the other hand, if you just use fabric and have the actor himself bulk out the suit, no fabric in the world will contour to the muscles 100%, so you have the Brandon Routh result. Technically speaking, Routh's suit is the most comic accurate in terms of colors and looks, but since the suit isnt 100% contoured to Routh's muscles, and the fact Routh is himself sort of lanky, His Superman just looks a bit too smooth and not ripped/bulked enough. Wilksinson had the genius idea to just put the sculpted muscles on the actual actor underneath to it creates an organic look. I wonder how the Routh suit would look if it used a similar technique. I'm sure all the Reeve fanboys would jump for joy with a suit that's more faithful to the comics and Reeve's era movies, at the same time more modern in terms of tech to make Superman look more ripped and jacked.

You don't think the red sections usually look much brighter in the comics?

Overall the colors were brighter. Even compared to BvS supersuit, which although is still darker compared to the comics, its a much richer blue and visibly brighter than MOS. In terms of the classical look, with red undies, Routh is the closest design wise. If Cavill were to wear that with the Wilkinson technique of slight padding sculpted from the actors muscles, I have no doubt it would look heaps better than what we ended up with on Routh. Although, I'm super happy regardless with what we're getting in BvS, a much more modern interpretation with the chain mail effect and the reflective texture.

Was anyone else here on the night that the first image of the SR suit was released?

Oh boy...

I was. I tried as hard to think what could make it better in motion, as we all do when photos are released. But there was just so much wrong that had to be fixed, but sadly we had to live with it. The manips didn't do anything to fix it, the only thing that did was with how Smallville treated it, and it was brightening the colors. No what how we feel with the sizes and look of certain things, the "S", boots, even the trunks, the colors were the thing to fix on it. Then we found out how bright the suit from BTS videos compared to the film "shrugs"

I just remember looking at it in those first few moments, and thinking "there is nothing in particular wrong here, but overall this is very, very wrong".

Tbh there's still no live-action Superman suit that I really like. The MOS one is my favorite, though. Reeve's suit comes second. The Nic Cage one is alright... for ~1999. And the suit from Returns... I don't hate that movie, but GOD that suit is awful.

I'm so very glad that the Superman costume this time around (BvS) has a gold-backed shield as opposed to the kind of vaguely yellow eggshell of MOS.

I love everything about this post. That's the best description of the Superman Returds suit I've ever heard. :D

Yup. Seriously, I couldn't help but laugh. That suit, and his ridiculous pose, were just awful.

I wasn't at the HYPE then, but I was highly vocal elsewhere. And when I mean elsewhere, I mean in my home where I yelled nothing but profanities for a good hour.

That reveal was the beginning stages of denial of wanting to like it. The Superman Returns trailer pulled me out of the funk after hearing #DatJohnWilliam'sTheme again but that quickly wore away in the theater as I left just as disappointed as I was with the first official photo. Everything about that suit makes me wonder if the team working on the film got pepper-sprayed viciously before coming to a decision. Just awful. I hate it (and hate is a strong word.)

There was instant hate for the suit coming from seemingly everyone but me. Back then all we had to compare it to was the Donner suit, with all it's Silver Age sensibilities, and I hate that suit. I remember being really happy that the new SR suit didn't look like it was cheap spandex, the cape was longer, and the \S/ wasn't warped. But I also wished they had changed more.

Now there's the MOS and BVS suits, which are freaking perfection in every way.

they said they were 3 weeks away from start. That's the suit that would have been.

Did you see the other suit?

The one with the Thor like cape on a curtain rod? !:loco:

haha yeah...they were all pretty crazy
