Was anyone else here on the night that the first image of the SR suit was released?

Oh boy...

not just the suit. the superman posing was very poor too. just nothing supermanish at all.

As much as I don't care for SR or the suit itself, I actually do have a bit of fondness thinking back on that image. I think I hated it at first, but looking back, it's got a certain Fleischer-ness about it.

Don't really see that myself. I thought the Fleischer suit looked much better.

Don't insult turds like that.

:woot:

LOL

Man, I remember sitting in the IMAX watching SR, TRYING so hard to like it. Trying to convince myself that it wasn't completely flat and hoping that Superman would become an actual character at some point in the movie. Ugh, I hate that film.

I'd waited around 20 years for a really good Superman film... and then we got that... :csad:

Never forget.

That is pic is terrible, mostly because whoever was in-charge of taking promotional pics, I would have fired him immediately, also who approved of this pic ? Singer ?

I've said it before. I liked SR for what it was. An updated Donner sequel.
Had some very good moments. Could have been much better (MOS). Could have been much worse. ( Superman Lives )

That shot, as you probably know is an attempt to replicate a Jim Lee pose.
Just goes to show that even a guy who in in great shape and built better than 95% of all men, can't pull that look off. It's not just the suit. It's the whole deal....

Notice I didn't say package.... Doe!:hmr:

This image was from a deleted scene that Jon Peters wrote. It's where Superman is being attacked by spawning Salmon and a group of fishermen try to save him but their fish hooks snag his cape, and well you know...

Salmon ARE the most vicious fish in the sea... You know that, right.?:cwink:

In this shot you can tell how the material they used really does look like some modern spandex.

I wonder how it differs from the material used in Cavill's suit?

Assistant: Mr Peters, here's your chicken.

Peters: Ah, Chicken. The fiercest bird in the animal kingdom

I recall in the SR BTS documentary the costume designer (forgot her name) was defending the suit in some way or another...

You gotta wonder that suit was designed back in 2004-ish and the MOS suit was designed in 2011-ish. That's such a short time span to see such a vast improvement and I think really shows how great Michael Wilkinson and Co. are at their craft.

I always hated the SR suit for all the reasons most people do despite my best efforts to act otherwise.

So happy with MOS/BVS suit, though.

Dear God. :( You sense that Brandon knows he looks like a prick there.

he's aware it looks like he's in his pajamas, so he's heading for his bed thinking "whatever.. I'm still being paid".

I've always said it - apart from the red being too dark - the SR suit had ALL the right elements to be the perfect comic suit adapted into live action, it's just that all those elements were the wrong size/shape or in the wrong place.

The Cavill suit may not technically be as faithful, but it gets EVERYTHING right that the SR suit gets wrong - the shapes, the size of the emblem, the cut of the cape and how it attaches. It just makes you wonder "what was Singer et al thinking?".

The SR suit lacks a sense of hyper-masculinity and power that is predominant in Superman's design.

The high collar, the tiny S shield, the v-shaped belt and small swimmers trunks. It all results in an image that comes across as much softer, slimmer, and more effeminate. Couple that with the mind-boggling color choices and you're left with a pretty disappointing Superman suit - even if most of the classic elements are there.

As lujho said, a couple of changes here and there and it would've been a killer suit. That's what's so depressing about it.

Poor Routh looks like he's wearing a giant rashguard onesie in those promo shots. Those are just Sears Portrait Studio awful. Thank goodness for the combo of costume by Wilkinson and Enos for photography.

I just can't believe they went with THAT red... What a waste.

Progression of live-action Superman suit:

Kirk Alyn, George Reeves (colourised), Christopher Reeve, John Haymes Newton (Superboy), Gerard Christopher (Superboy), Dean Cain, Nicholas Cage (the odd man out), Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill (MOS & BvS). Reeves, Reeve, Routh & Cavill all appeared on big screen while the rest were on the TV.
