BvS The Superman Suit Thread - Part 4

I mean, the dude was rocking a black Superman shirt before. Would he really be against wearing a shirt with the traditional colors? I highly doubt it.
Neo Clark is far different becoming Superman and they knew that and he knew that.

The whole Welling thing was just weird. In the last seasons of that show, he was running around in a red Tyler Durden jacket that had an "S" on it, and before that, he was wearing that black suit with that ugly airbrushed "S/8" thing on it. I don't know if it was him or the producers who mandated that he never put on the actual suit, but it would have looked better than either of those stupid costumes.

I was very disappointed that there was literally no scene with Welling in the suit. All of the shots of "Superman" were long distance shots of a CGI person. I was actually hoping for a Smallville take on the suit. But nope. Nothing.

Everyone was. I wasn't a big fan of the show, but I remember tuning in to the last episode to get a glimpse of Tom in the suit, and was greatly dissapointed. I can imagine how dissapointed fans of the show were.

This part in the Empire Magazine issue brought a huge smile to my face

There was a moment during the casting of Man Of Steel when they knew they had their man. It's a dinner party material now, how Henry Cavill Strode out for his screen test garbed in Christopher Reeve's old Superman suit, and no-one laughed. He felt so emphatic, so real.

He was still rocking a black Superman shirt. You truly think they'd waste money for him to "wear" a CGI blue one?

I laughed. I thought it was the perfect illustration of what the show had become in the later seasons. Something that didn't want to/couldn't commit to being a full blown Superman show when everything else said that it was.

After looking back at it, I thought their use of the SR suit was a sign of things to come. Or in this case, not come.

Ok I think I now see where you and I might have a difference of opinion. You're saying he wore a Returns T-shirt if I'm right and my thing is that he never wore an actual Superman suit.

Yeah, he never wore a suit. He just wore a t-shirt underneath his Daily Planet work clothes.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard it's against union rules to wear clothes that are tailored for other actors. So, he wouldn't be allowed to wear the SR suit unless they made one for him. Not that I wanted to see him in that suit anyway.

I think it's Tom's fault, if they can design Supergirl costume, Booster Gold costume, Green Arrow costume, Dr. Fate costume, heck a Hawk-Man costume.. then they (Smallville producers) could have easily designed a traditional looking Superman costume for Tom.

The problem was Tom himself was against the costume.

No that was all CGI. He never once put on the suit because he didn't want to be known or type cast as Superman. They offered him Reeve suit and he said no and then they offered the SR suit and he said no. He didn't want to wear a suit so they CGI it on him.

He wore the top part of Routh's suit. He didn't want to wear any suit; that's well documented, but they used the top of the returns suit for the very last shot. Right before he does the shirt rip, the outline of the shield is clearly visible. It's showing through his shirt.

You can see it here at about the 40 second mark. Ignore the commentary, lol

Ah ok then I can agree with you on this one or at least say he might have worn a t-shirt but he (Welling) was fully against the suit.

It wasn't Routh suit. They used it when handing it over to him but he never wore a suit. Welling didn't want to wear the suit. He couldn't even fit Routh suit.

Again, he didn't wear a full suit - no argument there. And there would be clear sizing issues between Welling and Routh. What he's wearing - blue top and SR shield, are intended to "be / invoke" the Routh suit.

I don't mean to say he's literally wearing the exact same top (unaltered, etc) Brandon Routh wore throughout SR. The video also makes it clear that it's not CGI.

I also read something about him not feeling he was physically up to snuff. I think that's just a rumor though.

It's too bad though. Other than seeing him in the suit, I was really interested in seeing how they would execute it. When the show was almost over, there were some really good manips around here. Traditional, but different enough from all the other live-action actors.

Understood but my thing was and always has been Welling was against wearing the suit. A t-shirt with a shield on it was fine for him but he was against wearing the suit. All Welling did IMO is wear what any random person would wear a Superman t-shirt.

This right here. They made tons of Smallvillized superhero suits for that show, and I actually liked them. Why couldn't they have shown Tom Welling in a Smallvillized Superman suit? There were so many amazing manips floating around here and elsewhere, I was really excited to see what the show would come up with. But there were rumors for years saying that Welling had it in his contract to never wear the suit, so I think a Smallville Superman suit never got made because of him. Instead we got the copout at the very end.

It was primarily the series creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who mandated that he never wear the suit; the "No flights, No tights" rule. Though, Welling certainly didn't object, thanks to his fear of being typecast and the Superman curse.

It was placed in Welling's contract in the beginning that he, basically, never appear as Superman. And after their departure, it was upheld.

I don't buy that Welling had such as clause in his contract in the beginning. Mostly because he was a nobody. I can buy him doing it years later when he got more power and even became a producer.

This is what he basically agreed to wear in the finale.

Routh himself was certainly a worthy follow up to Reeve, but the suit was beyond horrible with the high neckline, small raised shield, and the crazy unfinished-looking boots.

Coming off the heels of the "raised webbing" spidey suit, the raised shield on a bland spandex suit was a total letdown.

^ Ha ! I think maybe .. this was the suit Smallville designers has designed for Welling before he flatly refused to wear any Superman suit, then they decided to just tease fans with SR costume and go with CGI suit in the finale. (and Shirt rip with a T-shirt as a costume)

Agreed, costume designer Louise Mingenbach did horrible job, it's interesting that she is not working with Singer on the current movie, X-Men : Apocalypse.

I've seen Manips that changed just a few things, and the suit was much better.

For those who say Routh didn't have the body for Superman, I think it was more the suit than anything. Routh is actually pretty built and muscular. He does have a long torso imo, which may make him look less muscular, especially in conjunction with the SR suit and it's tiny little S shield emblem.
