The difference between now and then is that DC had long established continuity, which made it easy to figure out how to start playing a character and make them fit into the world.

But this new continuity hasn't been established. It's pretty much up in the air what's going to happen until we start reading it. The bad thing about that is, if we want to make it easy for new players to use the new continuity, we need to wait and let it develop a bit.

The good thing is, if we want to start going and begin to deviate, it's easier to adjust or for new players to adjust.

Our arcs tend to last a while, so how about we have an understanding that the first arc (at least) of the comics is happening around the same time as our posts. It doesn't have to be referenced until after both first arcs are done. It works like that in the comics.

See, here's the thing I equate it to.

Anyone ever watch Young Justice? Or Teen Titans? Or played the Arkham Asylum videogame?

All three of those referenced past events in continuity, but they were still kept vague enough as to not wear the stories down. Batman's back being broken was referenced in AA. We don't have to see it happen, we just know it did, and that's enough. Aquaman was known to be Aqualad's mentor in TT. We don't have to see Aquaman, we just know he's there, and it's enough. There are villains who are clearly enemies of heroes like Superman, Batman, and such in Young Justice. We don't have to know how they became enemies, it's just regarded as common logic that they are. And that's enough.

See where I'm going with this? Past continuity makes little to no difference at all when you're telling a story in the present. At most, it'll be a line of dialogue thrown in to reference. At least, it won't even be acknowledged. What matters is now, and what we know will be in the IC thread.

If for example, someone came in wanting to play Chris Kent, the player playing Superman in the new game would only need to react to it the same way that I would react now if someone did it in this one. I would say "Well, Clark hasn't experienced Last Son, but PM me. Maybe we can still work this out."

That's all that needs to be done! It's simple, it's effective, and it builds on the comradery between players in working together to achieve a common goal.

That's why Option 4 is ideal. It gives us basic points to go off of and we decide the rest.

I see this example as better suited towards Option 1 myself. We already know the basics of what's being changed for the reboot, so if we use the relaunch as the jumping off point for the WoH reboot and start around the same time as the relaunch, we could simply just acknowledge what's happening in the current comics has already happened and make vague references to it at a later point in time if we so choose.

My fear is, without knowing the continuity of the new DU, it's very easy for us to start doing things that contradict what will happen just a few issues down the line. Now, technically, that's fine. It just means our continuity, while not the same as DCnU will still be based on what little we know of the nU. Except new players, won't know the changes we made and differences we've created.

Of course, it might not be that big of a problem since the game will be relatively new as well. So there won't be a lot of history built up.

But, it's not an immediate problem now anyway because, we don't have new players interested in joining, we haven't made any of the changes suggested in the Revolution thread, and we haven't even closed out this season. By the time we do all that, we might just have a few issues of DCnU to work with.

And I'm getting about 15 books in the relaunch many of which are I'd say the "pillars of the DCnU" in terms of likely picked characters for the most part so I'd have a good grasp of the DCnU when the game actually is closed myself. And I'd be keeping myself up to date with the other books I'm not getting for the most part to I imagine.

I know I'm late to the party here, but I'd say option 4 would be preferable to me. One of the daunting things about a game like this is that continuity has been built for so long and is built on so many years of comic continuity on top of player continuity.

Not that players shouldn't have knowledge of what's going on or what's happened in the comics, but having it completely set in stone is a bit restricting, IMO.

Now that September is upon us, I think we need to start getting the threads ready to close out the season. I'm almost done with my Batman stuff. How far is everybody else right now?

I'm near done with this script I'm writing. Trying to push into the wee hours to get it wrapped tonight. Then I'll hopefully be clear to help you with your thing over the weekend, Byrd. And I'll maybe try and do a wrap-up post for Hal Jordan at some point next week too.

As for the reboot continuity question, it seems to me like most people have basically the same idea of what they want to do, but differing perceptions of which of the four options they would categorise that as. Here's what I'd suggest, in as concise a form as possible:

We tell our own original stories, unbeholden to current comics storylines. But we play using the roster of characters available in the DCnU, and where relevant, respect their currently in-canon origins/team alignments/etc.

I'm a bit out of whack with how I planned to do my stuff, but since I haven't been posting as frequently as I should have with Supes, I'll probably try to condense some of it to fit into the end to make up for my lack of activity. I don't know how much I can pull off in a week, hopefully more than enough to at least get me halfway done.

Sounds good to me.

Well, we can extend it longer if need be. That's what I'm trying to get a gauge on everyone (All four of us :csad:) and much time we need.

Not sure, but probably a couple of weeks at this rate. Maybe only another week if we can get a posting spree this weekend.

Also, if anyone wants to get in a fight over in Europe... ;)

EDIT: Now that I think about it more, what I said wouldn't work. Gonna have to think this over.

I know how we can alter the timeline of our games to make the reboot happen:

Aquaman punches Superman super hard and he goes flying so hard from the hit that he shatters the very walls of reality so the universe implodes and a new one is born. :awesome:

Stop trying to use Didio's original idea! :o

We all know the DCU will be restarted when Batman pwns Superman with his super-smart/awesome Batgod powers so hard, that Supes goes back in time like a little baby ***** and kickstarts the universe all over again.

...

This, I can oddly get behind.

Say what you want but my extensive posting career with him saved the games at one point when all of yous guys weren't posting as Keyser mentioned a while back.

:fhm:

Your welcome. :awesome:

"If we owe our lives to Aquaman, I'd rather be dead." -Byrd's mind

I would rather suffer the collapse of this RPG a thousand times over than be beholden to that scaly bastard.
