The Wrestling Thread Has More Hype Than WrestleMania XXIX - - Part 92

So I have to admit...I woke up getting pretty excited in seeing WM tonight, which was a shocker as I didn't have the same feeling yesterday even. I think I'm just going to view as WWE's Super Bowl and the manner of how big the PPV is no matter how much I'm not excited about most of the matches themselves.

:lmao:

Feels very weird that tonight is Wrestlemania and I just don't give a damn,All I'm interested in knowing after the show is IF Punk beat the streak/Brock won again and Cena turned heel..But that all seems unlikely.

IF I got no plans tonight and am bored then I might watch it by an"alternative"way with out ordering it.

As I said yesterday..I'll be playing WWE'13 and having WM my way,Not the real thing But it'll sure entertain me way more as it'll be the card I wanted!

Has RVD left TNA?

Like someone else said his contract is up but he's still deciding if he wants to re-sign with TNA or go back to WWE. He says he will return to one of the two.

I think he should consider going back to WWE. For him I think its just a question of schedule vs money. I think he wants a lighter schedule but if they don't give it to him will that bigger WWE paycheck be enough to sway his feelings and get him to come back? If WWE meets all his demands I have no doubt he would return. But could the money be too good to pass up that he sucks it up? WWE has to know they need veterans even if they just use him to put over younger stars ala Perfect's 02 run.

I think there are a lot more fresh matchups for him in WWE than before he left. There are a few good matches left for him in TNA too but I just don't think they would go for it. I'm not dying to see him wrestle these days but going back to WWE might yeald the best results for the fans.

I think that by the end of his full time WWE run he was burnt out AND the writing was on the wall as far as a push and wwECW's future. I think he just stopped caring mentally. In TNA he started out OK but he never wowed me. He got pushed to the world title too hard too fast at the expense of the far superior AJ Styles. That was bullsh**. RVD stopped being relevant pretty quickly after that. I just don't think he was a big deal beyond putting over up and comers. Like you said there was no spark to him. No big loss to the TNA product.

Matt. RVD may have stopped caring but he never turned into the kind of drugged out whiney b**** Matt Hardy did. I liked Matt but he hit a whole new low for *****baggery a while back. I loathe the idea of even seeing him these days.

Yeah he's got the potential to get more hate from some older fans than Cena gets. Many a fantasy...dashed!

Yeah I think he wants to be the same kind of hero on tv as he is when he meets them. I can understand that and I even respect that. Kinda hard for younger kids to reconcile a difference when the tv persona is a b*stard. They want a true blue hero to look up to like a role model. I can respect that. I don't mind if he doesn't turn heel. I just think Cena could stand to be a little more human and relatable instead of a cornball cartoon goody goody every moment he's on the air. Otherwise I agree with him.

You really think so? It seemed like this year WWE either picked the right people or let the inductees choose the person who inducted them. The only one who seemed REALLY off the wall was Stephanie...and maybe Arnold. I figure if Bruno had his way he would have been inducted by someone else. Arnold was clearly a celeb/media grabbing choice.

Most of the other inductors fit but Stephanie just felt way off. There was some tension between the two in storylines but nothing majorly memorable or classic as far as feuds go. I think Trish said it was something about strong women being a thing in common but it should have been Lita. Hell maybe even Finlay. Any number of people on call would have been better. Beth or Nattie would have been better too.

Eddie had the intangible x factor, that charisma that made him connect with people in a way only the great ones can, Del Rio is an upper mid card act at best.

I think you are right. He's got the in ring skill and a good look but plenty of guys had that and they were never more than midcarders. Ted DiBiase smoked Del Rio as a superstar doing a similar gimmick and even he wasn't a true top guy. I don't see why Del Rio should be pushed any higher except for the fact that they want a hispanic babyface star. He just doesn't have that magnetism of a true full time top star. Jericho even had it far more and Jericho was a guy who floated between upper midcard and main event during his biggest runs.

Austin recognized that the idea of PPV quality matches on free TV started by Bischoff was reaching the point of stupidity when you're booking him vs Lesnar with no build, and his forecast that it was the road to ruin has come true as it's practically impossible to make any match feel special as chances are it has already been done many times on Raw and SD.

Triple H has spent his whole career wanting to be like Flair and chasing the same respect and status Shawn has, yet he seems to have totally ignored the things they showed him about what you can leave as a real legacy once the worked win is forgotten.

It's fitting that Triple H has a huge nose like an Elephant trunk, he has a memory like them as well. I mean Batista is his one pure creation as he may have legitimized Cena at Mania 22 but he made note of that job and even though he couldn't get his win back at Mania 23 due to injury he beat Cena clean at NOC 2008in their first match since that Mania loss, there was absolutely no reason for him to beat the companies main guy
.

I agree. Bischoff is the guy that really pushed us where we are now with major matches being given away for free. I think the first match between Sting and Hardy was given away for free on TNA tv. That was a huge match at the time. WTF? And TNA wonders why their buyrates aren't bigger. Wrestling has become a tv driven product instead of a live gate/ppv revenue driven product. Thats not a good or bad thing just the way it is. But tv should be used better to SELL the PPV's Otherwise whats the point? The big companies would be getting far more out of PPV's if they didn't give so much away.

With Triple H I don't think he believed in Cena as much as Vince at the time and thats where his ego took over. I also think we were on our way to H getting his win back at WM23. One time I'm glad the match changed. There was no point in that rematch other than to soothe HHH's ego. Cena was The GUY. Triple H should have just accepted that and moved on.

The title reign was a great , but the damn thing only seemed relevant because it was around his waist. Punk did more for the title than it did for him.

The worst part was Nash costing Punk the title but Triple H still had to make it about himself. Punk wasn't even the one who got to punish Nash...Triple H did. Helmsley make the whole story about himself. Made no damn sense other than getting to work with his buddy and possibly end his career (making sure no one else got to) to put himself over. Kliq 4 Life. :o Haitch got to prove Punk "wrong" in beating him AND take out the guy Punk should have. It did nothing for nobody except Triple H. I really wanted to puke.

Will Punk ever get to beat Triple H? Retire him maybe? Who knows. And thats really lame that we don't know or even have an idea because it should happen.

Those are some of the matches I wished happened. Also HBK vs Eddie Guerrero would of been special . Shawn and Eddie are both christian and got along well. I remember Shawn's words about Eddie and saying they would wrestle in heaven. epic.

I remember Shawn saying that too. Almost brought a tear to my eye. I didn't think Bret ever wrestled Eddie. The worst thing with all those missed opportunities was that he was IN WCW with Eddie and Jericho and Rey for a bit. Those matches could have happened even if they didn't have storylines. I liked Brets work with Malenko and the stuff with Benoit was classic. Some of the best matches of Brets WCW career.

Its really strange because between them Bret and Shawn wrestled a lot of the same guys and almost every big star of the last 20 years. So between the two of them you'd think ONE of them would have worked with Eddie. Thats even worse than cases where one of them worked with someone but the other didn't. Bret got to wrestle Sting and Booker but Shawn never did. Shawn got to wrestle Angle but Bret never did. Just really strang that neither one did anything with Eddie in that age where the face/heel thing wasn't even a restriction on who faced who. I guess it was just a case of the circumstances and things not lining up.

Those "just missed each other" kind of fantasy matches really sting don't they?

Yeah. The first Rocky film wasn't about him winning. Boxing was a backdrop for the love story and the man's struggle against something far more general: life. His match with Creed was about him proving to others and himself that he belonged there. That he deserved the chance. That he could go the distance. It was his chance to prove he wasn't a nobody or a bum and he could at least make it to the dance. He didn't win the fight but he won something for his pride and Adrian's heart was the best prize he could have asked for. Thats why Rocky Balboa was such a great bookend. It didn't even matter that Rocky didn't win the fight with Dixon. He wanted to show that he could still step in the ring and give it a good try. He had something left to prove to himself because of that yearning. After his wife died he was a bit aimless and the fight helped him find peace and come to terms with a lot of things beyond just the end of his boxing career.

Boxing in the Rocky films has always been a great metaphore for life.

With Cena its always been about Cena WINNING. He's said so time and again in his two matches. He has to BEAT the Rock. Balboa's whole reason for living didn't hinge on winning even though he wanted to. He was an underdog and he knew it. Cena's no underdog even though he's not on the Rocks level as an all time star. He's achieved a ton of stuff. He's not a nobody. Just stepping in the ring with The Rock isn't enough. He wants to prove he can beat him. Its far more vain of a thing and he eventually took his loss a lot harder than Rocky Balboa did his loss against Apollo Creed.

Exactly. A better comparison than Rock/Cena would be 1-2-3 Kid vs Razor Ramon. Nobody expected the Kid to win. Nobody took him seriously. He was less than a longshot he had no chance in most peoples minds.

Even that Jeff Hardy vs The Undertaker ladder match is a better fit. Jeff didn't win but he earned something just as important. Respect. He proved he belonged in that spot.

During that period of the AE they were on the same level when Foley retired yet HHH seems to still think Foley was beneath him back then. Mick NEVER should have been off the HOF tv brooadcast. If it was USA's choice I hope Vince and HHH fought hard for him when they first heard the plan. Somehow I doubt it all went down like that though.

He knows no limits, he even wants Trish's HOF ring. :(

DAHAHAHAHA! You're on a roll today. I must say Trish is looking especially gorgeous right there. I guess its true what the say about the glow of motherhood when a woman is pregnant.

Kinda annoying that both those old fossils had Trish either on her knees or bent over. Not fair.

"Hey Book! remember when I acted like a big plantation owning racist towards you and then kicked out of your finisher immediately and beat you clean at Mania?......Good times. :)"

Don't forget "Remember that time I made you job during one of my many many combacks from injury? You were so annoyed by the sh**ty treatment you got that you left the company? Hahaha! Good times, Booker. We actually made you King just so I could call myself The King of Kings!"

Interesting question. I also wonder how Bruno and David get along these days? Wonder if David was at the HOF for his dad's induction?

As far as Foley goes I HOPE Bruno made an effort to show Foley some respect and got along with him and maybe even praised him somehow someway. I guarentee Mick has nothing but respect for the Living Legend no matter what he said about Mick in the past. I get what Bruno is saying sometimes but hopefully he cuts guys of different eras some slack now because...well...they are from different eras. It shouldn't always be like it was in his day even though I think he makes some good points sometimes.

Naaahhh. I think HHH went after Bruno because he's an old school kind of guy and he knew the HOF was incomplete and lacking in legitimacy without the WWE's first true face/megadraw during is existence as an independant promotion.

Plus getting Bruno for the HOF as they were holding Wrestlemania in NJ and the Hall in NYC made sense while they were in that New York/Northeast market. Bruno made a huge impression in that market.

Exactly. I don't think Bruno had anything to do with the actual decision but I get the feeling Vince and HHH may have made the call to bump Foley just to make sure Bruno and Trump made the tv broadcast.

Its really cool to me how whenever Foley gets really disrespected or doesn't get his due from a big promotion fans let their feelings be known loud and clear.

For Mick this was almost a modern day equivilant of "Hmmp! That'll put a lot of butts in seats" in the sense that fans knew the call was complete bulls*** and made sure the PTB knew it. Foley's earned more respect than that and the fans love him. Times like this are when a guy knows he's really made a mark. The people let him know by helping change things.

To me the fans support of Foley this week showed the impact he's made on this business far more than a HOF ring.

I'll give 'em credit. The second match had more doubts in my head about just what would happen. The "My Journey" dvd title should have been a sign that Shawn was losing but I still had some doubts.

Just so so sad. It was hard to read this. I really feel for Flair and his family now. The whole situation is just so tragic. When the sliver of a silver lining is the fact that Reid's at peace it really drives home how tough those demons may have been to overcome.

Fantastic photo. If Trish does only have one more match in her I hope this is it. It would be great for her to pass that diva torch to AJ, who I feel is the best girl in the company right now. AJ literally grew up watching Trish. The match would mean a lot to her and the fans. I just hope Vince realizes it and how good the match could be.

Yeah some of the hookups and dating in WWE really shocked me. I guess when those are the people you spend most of your time with there is bound to be a lot of intercompany dating. But some guys and girls have so many different pairings. How many divas and ex divas has Punk nailed? Him and Maria? Kind of an odd couple.

Even outside of WWE its crazy how life imitates art. The whole thing with Woman, Benoit, and Kevin Sullivan was just freakin bizzare. I guess we saw something similar with Triple H and Stephanie only not as crazy.

With all that it wouldn't shock me if AJ and Dolph did end up at least going out togehter for a little while even though I think those pics have been kayfabed a bit.

Its also interesting that he picked Race and Patterson as dream opponents since Shawn Michaels also picked them the other day.

Thats a cool story. Even as recently as the late 80's it was still about protecting the image of the business in a sense. Yeah a lot of people knew it was fake but in those old school territories with those old school guys they would get tried all the time and their mentality was to look tough and be tough anywhere. They weren't going to let themselves be punked out. Even though a lot of people knew the deal there was still some kayfabe alive.

I think it was Bill Watts who told his guys something like "I don't mind you getting into a fight but if you do make sure you win it." And this was in the Mid South promotion of the 80s!

With Big Barry I'm not surprised he cleaned house. He came up the old way and was a big SOB. AND his dad was BlackJack Mulligan? I know Marines are tough as hell since I'm related to a few but those guys were lucky there were three of them and Windham didn't beat them even worse. Meng might have tried to take their EYES out for God's sake. There was no way Windham was going to allow himself to lose that fight for a lot of reasons.

To any UK fans, remember Mania starts at 12am.

So what's Cena's best case scenario for tonight? Win the title and be booed out of the building to only take it in stride(seeing as how he was pretty much booed out of the building during the HOF ceremony), or...turn heel?

I can't believe the IC Title match is on the pre-show. What a joke.

When the pre-show will start? Is it 40 minutes from now? I'm not good with time-zones. :)

I hope he turns heel but most likely he will just win cleanly and WWE pretends like it was a happy ending.

I've never bought a WWE DVD (or any wrestling DVD for that matter) but have they ever edited the crowd reactions for Cena on any of their releases?

Fight Network talks to The Shield at Axxess:

As a New Yorker, I still don't like them touting this as event as the WWE "coming home". I know their in Metlife Stadium where the Jets and Giants call home, but that's in Jersey. They're not really in NY, and they're not where it all started.

Also, I'm very curious to see how the weather plays out. I know they're going to have heaters in the turnbuckles, and they're going to need it because its not nearly as warm as it was predicted to be. But I can definitely understand why they didn't go to MSG for this, considering they can only hold 20,000 people there, as opposed to the 70,000 expected tonight.

i miss the way jr would open wrestlemania

Anyone watching the Pre-show?

I quite like the set up with the announcers they have.

watching the Pre-Show, I see that there's a Twitter tracker there. Normally that would be stupid, but the networks do the same with legit sports.

i want to see this but i dont know how because i dont have cable yet i would ask for help via pm but thats ****ING ILLEGAL so please do not
