1. If she's MJ, it's a cop-out and will feel forced and contrived. Especially, since both "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Spectre" pulled the same crap. (Is Benedict Cumberbatch Khan? Is Christoph Waltz Blofeld?)

2. The secrecy, deception and chicanery of hiding who she really is is stupid too. But since reports are now that she is simply Michelle and not Mary Jane Watson as what was reported on the call sheet, I think the gossip columnists owe the Internet a big apology if she is in truth just Michelle.

3. The other thing I hate about this "is she or isn't she" is that it brought out the worse in fans. Not so much here, but on Facebook and elsewhere. People were called "racists" for no good reason and those who wanted a traditional MJ (including myself) were treated unfairly too.

Lastly, if she is MJ but doesn't feel like MJ, dress like MJ or they change a lot of who MJ is (the same goes for Sally, Liz, Ned and Flash) then this movie is going to have a hard time keeping fans or getting the respect it wants regardless of how diverse it wants to be or attempting to be.

I think there is a twist to her character, but I don't think it's MJ.

This is incorrect. Casual audiences, whom matter most, don't care about these characters as much as some of us do and therefore don't really have any preconceived expectations, so changing Flash or MJ or Liz or anyone like that really doesn't matter all that much. Especially in the cases of Sally, Liz and Ned because this is their first big screen appearance.

All the casual audiences expect, if anything, from these characters are:

• MJ is Peter's one true love.
• Flash is a bully.

It's that simple.

The only way it's going to have a hard time keeping peoples attention or garnering respect if its a bad film. Easy peasy.

Edit: Actually, I can give you Mary Jane because anyone who is at least familiar with Spidey knows MJ, but the rest really are interchangeable in terms of the bigger picture.

yeah, you can't really lump in MJ with the rest of the supporting cast.

if anything, the Raimi films probably further mainstreamed the character. so even the casual audience would be aware that MJ is Spidey's true love and is a red head.

People can keep making all the excuses they want. "Mary Jane" who doesn't look like Mary Jane, doesn't act like Mary Jane, doesn't feel like Mary Jane or doesn't even call herself Mary Jane, simply isn't Mary Jane. To this day people still say Kirsten's MJ was MJ in name only, why should this be any different.

I always felt that Kirsten's MJ was a mix between MJ and Gwen Stacy. But anyways, I'm still not convinced that Zendaya is Mary Jane and I'm annoyed that the threat title has not been corrected yet.

Even if they had to write it Zendaya is "Michelle" that would be useful.

It was the Zendaya is Michelle thread before. Then the mods changed it to what it currently is based on an unconfirmed rumour. Maybe they don't want to change it back now.
