Zendaya as Mary Jane/MJ/whomever goes through a She's All That transformation at the end of the film and she says the infamous 'face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot' as she's Pete's date for Homecoming.

the thing is, in the trailer, they basically replaced MJ from the Raimi films with Liz. Liz gets basically the same treatment - the guys pining/staring at her, the lingering shots to show her beauty, she needs to be saved, etc.

in fact, if they didn't call her Liz, I would think she's the new MJ.

Zendaya's character, based on how she looks and acts in the trailer ( which matches previous descriptions ), does not even remotely give off any vibe similar to MJ.

Liz is more of an MJ character than Zendaya's character.

The question then would be if it counts as a redesign.

IF she is MJ, they're planting the seeds with her brass attitude. If they're going the ugly duckling route, I didn't want them to go with the meek nerd stereotype. So for whatever it's worth, it's nice the sarcastic friendly jabs are at her core.

And if anyone wasn't convinced before, it's hard not to be suspicious. You don't get someone of Zendaya's fame (with the teen demographic) only to have her play frumpy second-fiddle. I'm going into this film expecting their equivalent of the "jackpot" moment.

MJ doesn't chide and belittle guys who stare at the hot girl. She IS the hot girl that the guys stare at and pine after.

In the trailer, Zendaya doesn't even look cute or pretty. she looks plain and grubby looking and "serious" and "deadpan." She does look the dry bookworm who sits off in the corner and observers other people to make comments about them.

Liz, on the other hand, is emphasized for her beauty in the trailer. she wears fashionable clothes and it looks like she runs with the "popular girls" crowd ( blonde Betty is in her group ).
